Have they made one of these chips yet to control your wife? Maybe just a simple "off" switch (so I can watch ESPN in peace)? or... "Zipp-it and Get me a beer" switch?
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
"It wasn't meant to protect ANY act you desire, no matter how vulgar or cruel. Howard Stern broke the law, and he was punished for it. The law was put in place for a reason."
...and just who defines the law? Who draws the line on what is "ok" and what is considered, "vulgar or cruel"? The problem is Mike this line is getting less and less clear and to a great extent is being controlled by paranoid religious groups.
We can only hope those nutcases are putting themselves out of jobs. They've already forced radio talk show host Howard Stern to move to Satellite radio. The FCC are a bunch of spineless pansies who bow down to ultra-paranoid religious whack-jobs, who get their panties all bunched up every time someone say's a bad word (cover your kids ears) or flashes a boob (cover your kids eyes, lord knows they'll never recover). I say good riddance! This country wasn't founded on censorship; it was founded on Freedom of Speech.
Ok I'm naïve on the politics of this, so my post is more of a question than a answer. I know this is an argument that has gone back and forth, but here goes again...
Wouldn't it benefit Apple in the long run to get more of its software into the public's hands? Sure, it might detract from them selling hardware (short term), but I can honestly say for me (average Joe) I've never purchased a Mac because they simply don't have the software titles I'm interested in and Windows does. I mean sure, they've got great stuff, but they lack in GAMES, yes games... I've said it, gotten it out. I'm a gamer and so are all of my friends. I'd venture to say a good chunk of those purchasing PC's are in the same group as me (surf the web and play games). So if the Apple OS became more popular, wouldn't more developers consider making a version of their game in the Apple OS flavor?
Why do you automatically assume it's copyright-infringed music?
Probably because I can't think of any artist that likes to give away his/her music for free. Course you could probably pick-up some freebie folk-tunes or a nice head-bangin country tune recorded by a freckled head kid from the county fair.
Percentage figures like these are going to spell doom for torrents. They're going to do nothing but light a big fire under the MPAA and RIAA's asses (Not like they needed it). Expect more fake/ spoofed files masquerading as legitimate movies/ music. People should start thinking about using some bolt-on software for their EDonkey (or ??), much like http://donkeyfakes.gambri.net/,or they're going to be downloading a lot of Garbage (and not the Shirley Manson type either).
I use a program called, "EditPlus" http://www.editplus.com/ It has syntax highlighting for the most common extensions (HTML, CSS, PHP, ASP, Perl, C/C++, Java, JavaScript and VBScript).
What I basically do is paste the document into EditPlus, then I use a function called "Replace" to get rid of the big stuff and edit out the rest of the tags manually. It may not be the best solution, but it's visually easier than just using notepad.
"Nevertheless, Richter said that he and his company had changed their e-mailing practices and pledged not to send spam to anyone who has not asked to be sent commercial e-mail."
Richter knows nobody in their right mind would agree to receiving the loads of $hit he shovels. What he effectively saying is, "I'm going to hide in teeny-tiny font, at the bottom of some website, when you click "Accept" for your order (whatever that may be) you're also agreeing to receive my spam."
In his case he's a product of what he solicits - Garbage.
With the affordability of laptops I opted to purchase my child one as opposed to an Xbox or PS2. My thinking was it allowed him not only to play games, but also familiarize himself with the keyboard, internet, word processing program, etc. He quickly became proficient and amazed me how much I actually learned from *him* about computers. I was a bit reluctant at first letting him use the internet; however, we had a discussion on what's acceptable and I have parental control on the internet. I think in today's society you're doing your kid an injustice if you wait until their high school years to introduce them to this technology.
"Bye the way your post sucks and has nothing to do with reliability..."
You're wrong, I could reliably predict MS employees or suck-ups (much like yourself) would post as an Anonymous Coward. Grow a sack and take your down-mod like a man.
Not true, just by the sheer number of people who loathe MS, you're guaranteed a greater number of attacks will be geared towards the MS platform than Linux.
...and they should be flamed if what they are saying is, in fact, incorrect, and does not take into cognisance all the facts.
Arguments are debates...
You fail to understand in certain situations there is no clear "Right or Wrong", there are simply differing viewpoints. If your both arguments are factually correct, but viewpoints differ, why should one be downmodded?
Perhaps there needs to be a new Mod option for "Argument"?
I understand your arguement and generally I'd tend to agree with you; however, when you have a group of people on Slashdot who are so rigidly in support of something (Ie: Pro-War in Iraq) they will immediately mark a post as "Flamebait" or "Troll" when you may have a very valid arguement against the War.
When your post is sitting at "-2 Troll" because some irresponsible/. Mods decided your view was wrong, other Slashdotters won't even get a chance to view your arguement. In addition, you might even have your IP or username banned as a troublemaker. How is that fair?
I've noticed if one posts anything on Slashdot going "against the grain" of popularity (differing views on War in Iraq, Linux or Apple for example) The mods immediately presume your post is either a "Troll" or "Flamebait". People often have a hard time setting aside their personal beliefs and tend to view things in a biased manner. The unfortunate outcome of this is they end up burying otherwise interesting viewpoints.
NASA should stop trying to polish a turd (Space Shuttle) and move on to building the next generation space vehicles. The design is decades old and is obviously failing in many areas.
I agree, it's not always going to be a patch. Although I would venture to say for the majority of problems, patches are avaialble. Yes, there are going to be excuses why people don't maintain a secure environment. For me it's generally a PITA to update our internal servers (inside the firewall), because I depend on our "Security Group" to post the system patch somewhere inside the firewall where I can download it. Yet, I can guarantee you one thing... the instant a new patch *is* available I immediately take action.
Why is it that the Admins can't take it upon themselves to keep their software updated with the latest patches? Instead, it takes an article like this to get them off their asses to take action. It shouldn't be this way.
This is strikingly similar to the Cisco OS debacle, where a patch had been available for some time, yet Admins failed to patch their hardware on their own. Yes, it's a pain in the ass to take your network down, but look at the alternative...Hacked!

Simply stated, the FCC is unconstitutional!
The religious freaks have decided his post was a troll because they don't want you to hear the truth. censorship sucks, please UPMOD Parent
Support your local pirate radio, much like http://www.freakradio.org/

Plenty of Linux experts ready to answer your questions, all you have to do is ask.
Yes it is. http://www.linux.org/dist/

Stop the MS machine!
Good point Eric, with MS you're almost guaranteed to get hacked. Now THAT's predictability!

that helps Good luck with your shopping.
I usually check reviews at www.cnet.com
To my knowledge they're an independent reviewer
Once you know, you never Newegg.
