  1. So he is still around... on Weird Al: The Saga Begins · · Score: 1

Everybody who went to my high school a couple years ago thought he'd gone into the witness protection program and become one of the math teachers there. Mr. Addamson didn't have the long hair or the moustache, but he *did* have the glasses, and he *did* take other peoples' songs and screw with the lyrics (e.g. he turned Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire" into "We Didn't Make It Up", a song that he taught the other math teachers to think about when they're dealing with disgruntled students). He was definitely the best teacher I've ever had (even including the couple great profs/TAs I've had in my one year at UIUC so far).

  2. Re:LILO in BIOS! on Phoenix to embed bootup ads in BIOS · · Score: 1

Some of us already have that :) Nettrom (the Netwinder's firmware) supports lots of nifty options for loading kernels. I hear it's modeled after Sun's booting firmware. I guess what I'm saying is that it exists (and has for quite a while) -- but I don't know if it exists on PC hardware yet.

  3. Re:An easy solution on Petition against EU software patents · · Score: 1

The only complaint I can see against this is that somebody will take somebody else's idea and implement it in free (e.g. free beer, not free speech) software. This throws the royalties issue out the window. Not that I really agree with this argument or not (I'm still kinda undecided about software patents -- part of me says they're evil, but part of me says that I could make a lot of money off of them ;) but I'm sure it'd come up.

  4. Netwinder on The Answer to iMac Envy: NEC's Z1 · · Score: 1

Bah... my Netwinder's still cooler than this or the Profile. It isn't made by Packard Bell, and it comes pre-installed with Linux :)

I'm sorry, it doesn't get anywhere near 165F at 80% humidity in Yuma, AZ. Maybe 130F at 50% humidity. Though I do like the idea of "disposable robots" to do dangerous stuff :)

  6. Re:China already has supercomputers on Playstation 2 Under Export Controls · · Score: 1

Have you taken a look at the specs for the PSX2? If I remember correctly, it has just over three times more floating-point power than a 500MHz PIII. That's some serious computing power for a console.

  7. Mac Support on CivCTP Patch Released · · Score: 1

I never thought I'd see *this* about a shrinkwrapped game:

To play Civ:CTP on a Mac, you'll need to buy the Linux version of the game, download the PPC binary (about 3MB now) and install LinuxPPC 5.0 beta.

    (See http://www.lokigames.com/products/civ/civ_faq.html )

Now if they'd just release a StrongARM binary, I'd actually be able to play it.

  8. This *could* be good... on AOL acquires WinAMP, Spinner, SHOUTcast · · Score: 2

Well, at least the WinAMP thing could be good. With somebody as big as AOL backing it, we might see MP3 become the de facto audio streaming standard. Of course, I'm pretty sure they'll want you to use "AOL WinAMP" (*shudder*), and they might put a few proprietary things in there. But consider tik... at least with that project, they were nice and friendly about keeping everything open, and making sure their service runs on just about every platform out there (instead of not acknowledging the clones out there, like ICQ did, which, among a few other reasons, is why basically everybody I know decided to move from ICQ to AIM). What they'll do with Spinner and ShoutCAST, I have no clue. I'm hoping they'll play nice and make them nice and open. But after all, this *is* AOL we're talking about, and there *is* a reason I left them so long ago, ditto for why I microwave all the CDs they send me (advice: NEVER try it for more than 3 seconds... especially if you live in a dorm or an appartment).

  10. 12:01 AM?!? Whee! on Star Wars Theater Rules · · Score: 1

Hmm... this'll be even better than I thought. I get back home from school on the 16th, hopefully one of my friends who works at the 24 theater complex (I'll bet they'll show it on 4 screens or more) can score a few of us some tickets sometime around then, and we'll all get there just before midnight :) Nice way to kick off summer vacation.
