Yes, because if everyone got a bigger antenna that would go a long way towards solving wifi interference problems...
Can you point me to an exchangable antenna selection for my cordless phone? Umm, yeah, I did not think so...
A bigger antenna could solve his problem within his dorm room because it will reduce the interference with the phones that are stuck with their little antennas.

I agree with this!! You want to reach the people that are going to decide what browser to roll out for the mega-corp.
I read the WSJ (but I don't run a mega-corp, even a mini-corp) for buisness insight and what is happening in the telcomm, technology and internet sectors. All groups that you want to reach.
I lived on my own and paid my way through college without family assistance. I was working at a job at close to the minimum wage throughout. It is not impossible.
Same here, but I delivered pizzas, and built houses (manual labor). I made decent money working 60-70 hour weeks during the summer. I could live on what I made during the summers and weekends during school. Being highly motivated to get an education helps too.
In respons to the grandparent of this post there are many people out there that could benifit by being able to get an education. One of the few things that the state should provide is reasonable cost education. But you can do it on your own if you are motivated enough. You do not need a lot of bling bling while going to school. I managed to get by on what was below the poverty line when I was putting myself though school (and it was some of the best times in my life)
So you may get lower prices at checkout but only because you pay taxes to otherwise subsidize Wal-Mart.
If the report is correct (and I admit I've only read the media coverage of the report, not the report itself), that's not true capitalism at all.
I need to look at that report, it sounds interesting, but I think it sounds like it approches the problem from the wrong side.
I do live near a Wal*Mart, 2 in fact. It never stops amazing me how much stuff they sell that is so cheap. However the people working there are generaly a sad lot.
If you do not like the working conditions at Wal*Mart go to school, get a degree (or certificate), educate yourself so you can do better. Don't have children until you you can afford to raise them. Make sound finacial decisions in your life and don't feel pressed to be a wage slave.
Instead of the state providing health insurance, they should provide educational opportunities. The fact that the state has to pick up the tab for medical costs, and health insurance for so many people spaeks volumes to its failing to educate it population.
In the mean time, those that are motovated to get an education and take care of themselves will not have to work at Wal*Mart.
And yeah, I know that there will always be a certain subset of the population that will never get educated, and these are the people that we all will have to support in some fashion or another. But I would bet that there are many people out there that with the proper educational oppertunities will be able to do better for themselves.
Sing it brother! Wal*Mart is just doing what it should be doing, trying to get better pricing for its customers. If the the RIAA does not want to distribute though Wal*Mart, they don't have to. There are plenty of other retail outlets they can go though.
Walmatrs competitors, are, wel, competitors. You don't think that their competators would rip out Wal*Marts guts in a second if they were given half a chance.
People on this list love to hate Wal*Mart, but that fact is that they are good for the economy and for the consumer, they are squeezing every last bit of efficency out of the system to give you better prices. That is capitalism in a nutshell, survival of the fitest.
The cable companies are going to have to get used to people actually using more and more bandwidth as time goes on. As more over the net products become available the bandwidth usage will go up.
The smart move if for the cable companies and Tivo/Flix to start peering so as to reduce their networking costs.
but its already been proven that the honor system doesnt work either
The honor system would work if the movie companies where not trying to rape the public.
I would use a distribution system, and pay for using it, if it was not so expensive. The average geek can download (rip) movies and music because the technology is avaiable to him/her to do so. That means that the technology is avaiable for the *IAAs to dramaticaly reduce their costs as well and give better products and service to their customers.
Had they done that, piracy would not be seen as a problem. The honor system will work when there is honor in the system.
Network bandwidth is _cheap_ compared to paying actual live people to open envelopes all day long.
Network bandwidth is cheap unless you are Cox, Adelphia, Time-Warner, etc. They may end up shutting people off for pulling down large movies on a regular basis.
I would suspect that with the MASSIVE amounts of bandwidth that NetFlix could end up pushing it would be in their best interested to peer directly with the large cable providers so that both parties can reduce their costs.
Corps like higher profits, but they like not having to work hard even more. So instead standing up for fair and pesky competition, they just have their lobbyists keep matters under control by buying Congresspeople.
It is not about working hard, it is about minimizing risk. Corps want the best ROI, but with minimal risk. Shareholders prefer nice returns without the possibility of losing their shirts.
What oil shortage? Have you heard President Bush ordered a buildup of the US oil reserve level, which is the real reason oil is up from $22/gal. to $40/gal.?
I agree, there is no oil shortage, as long as there is spare capacity. However the supply and demand curve is also a slave to the markets, which are a little jittery due to the reasons I posted earlier.
As for Bush's actions, I actually like that we are socking away oil in our reserves, it has two benifits: first it raises the cost of energy, which causes the economy to adjust slowly to higer prices rather then a sudden shock. And secondy, we are slightly better off if it really hits the fan in the middle east. At least we have a few months of energy to run on, rather then suddenly everything coming to a halt. That will give countries that want to mess with us something to think about, for a little while anyway.
Do they mention that the US setting the middle-east ablaze causes this? I can understand the US economy going into recession as a result of oil price hikes due to *our* war, but it's causing nice recession episodes in many other countries as well. I bet those countries, supposedly our allies, must love the heck out of us too.
How about this, the US economy requires less $ per $ of GDP. We are actually using less energy now (relativly speaking) then we were after the last gulf war.
One of the real reasons is that China and India are now coming into thier industrial age and are starting to consume larger quantities of oil to power there industries.
Also we also have a lack of investment in oil drilling, which is resulting in the current shortage. Seems the oil companies want a better garuntee on their investments. Problem is that is take many years to realize the investments they make now.
And one final reason to consider is the instability of the oil producing countries, Iraq, Venezula. Also Saudi Arabia, our long time buffer against oil shocks, is running into its limits for production.
Prices will go up, and investments in energy resources are more probable to yield better returns now. Welcome to the free market.
As for the gas guzzling non-ecological cars/trucks/vans the we drive, we would not drive them if we could not afford to put gas in them...Hint hint. Approach the problem from that perspective, and you will see results. As always, money talks.
The elitist control freak running the show wouldn't let our code in.

I'm much more willing to give your point of view some credit if you back it up with something.
Even if there aren't any such regulations, it's incredibly stupid to run a business and not have proper fire monitoring and suppression devices installed.
we are talking about the CLECs here, live Verizon. So "incredibly stupid" is not out of the realm of possibilities.
Ok, I sheepishly stand corrected...

If you want less expensive beer, and good flavor (or any flavor for that matter), brew your own at home.
It can be far more economical, and you get braggin' rights to boot.
I have Vonage and use it for an office and FAX line. It has worked fine for me so far. I get my FAXes, no problem.
