    I've got family that live out in the country, and their dial-up service was so slow and noisy that they could only reach 14.4Kbps for 5 minutes at a time. Naturally they dropped service and haven't tried it since.

    Microsoft BASIC taught a jillion geeks to program on Apple II & C64 and there's no reason why it can't do so now.

    Exactly my thought. Lots of cat 6 feeding into a large Gigabit router located in a central closet. That way you can easily pay as you go and upgrade as needed, knowing that Cat6 will take you far into the future.

    How does your OS reduce the speed of your hardware?

    By using an inefficient graphics driver (nouveau) with an eye-candy laden window manager (compiz).

    they actually run slower under Linux than Windows.

    That's why I stick with Ubuntu 10.10 and the nvidia binary driver.

    Business has it's own logic, which encompasses shortsightedness along with regulatory and cost pressures, which is quite different from the math/physics logic that geeks like to think we have.
