Some newer Geforce video cards come with heatsinks on the DDR SDRAM chips. My roommate has one without heatsinks, and I've noticed that the chips rarely get hot to the touch, so heatsinks may be overkill at this point (although some hardware sites I've read have claimed that the RAM can be clocked higher when cooled like this). Don't be surprised if next generations of DDR (or QDR) RAM get quite toasty, especially with constant heavy use.

I never play anyone I don't know anyway, partly because I'm not very good, but also because most of the fun of playing is social, i.e. get a bunch of guys together, drinks some beers, blow each other into mip-mapped chunks with a rail gun.

Anyone simply browsing for news would come away with impression that AMD's 1Ghz processors sucks. Considering the popularity of slashdot, this is a remarkably irresponsible posting.

Any software copy protection scheme is defeated shortly after the software hits the store shelves. What major brain dysfunction is responsible for entire industries to devote millions of dollars in what you pointed out is a futile effort?

Perhaps its the same reason we lock our doors - just to provide the "casual thief" a reasonable deterant. Joe Sixpack tries to copy some hot new song from his friend Ernie, it doesn't work, so he goes and buys it himself. Those of us with some technical knowledge know about the tools to get around such protection (or we create said tools if we have to, despite the possibility of arrest & harassment from the MPAA or RIAA). Some of us with a conscious refuse to use such tools, but then again such people would probably have spent the money for a legitimate copy anyway.

Just because the former was done with a computer doesn't make the action any less deadly.

Also, your question about why these systems were connected to the internet: first, you don't know that for sure, it may have been a dialup or even someone overriding the actual satellite link up. Second, its becoming more & more clear that everything is going to be on the internet soon enough. As we move to a fully "wired" and interconnected world, issues like this are going to become more & more serious. I have no doubt that pretty soon we will have to deal with the legal question of whether a cracker can be judged as a murdered.
