  2. I would hate to work there! on The Rise and Rise of IT Administrators · · Score: 1

Firstly, admins digging and deleting your personal files, as some users have posted, have waaaaay to much time on their hands.

Secondly, has anyone heard of VMWare ESX? A developer can be root or whatever without affecting production or taking up too many resources. This is what we use.

Thirdly, why would a share not be backed up? Isn't the purpose of putting files on the server to reduce email bandwith and user administration? We have TSM go through and back up all the servers every night, with the shares holding a priority. Doing it any other way would be self-defeating for an IT department.

Fourthly, what is the problem with not having access to your own laptop? I can understand this for a secretary or intern, but a developer? When they leave the company, just reimage the drive! It's rather simple. Oh... they don't have laptops... man, I would hate to work there.

    2. Fuel Cells
    3. Engineering atoms/molecules using a small Linux cluster for the purpose of creating more lightweight, durable materials. The applications range from space travel to camping gear.
    4. Building the proton computer and loading an older version of Slackware on it. By the time this is built, you won't want to put Windows on the computer, since the OS will be so bloated it would take too long to download a page with java applets.

  6. Alienation on Red Hat's CEO Suggests Windows For Home Users · · Score: 2, Informative

RedHat is being short-sighted and alienating its developers and users. Many developers have put a lot of work and sweat and time away from family to make Linux user-friendly. I don't think they will want to work with a company that has scrambled their efforts with every release (i.e., Bluecurve) and then call Linux work unfinished and not as good as Windows.

In today's GUI world, without a solid desktop, you have no server. And there are many companies out there who are starting to consider or request Linux for clients and servers. Does it make sense to have Suse on the desktop and RedHat on servers? I don't think so. Administrators would be doing twice the work and managers twice the training.

Suse's Yast2 and KDE configuration is a perfect example of a successful desktop. A 90-year old grandpa would not buy a computer with Windows any more than he would program the VCR. But most people in the work place who go to the control panel in Windows before calling the help desk would not have a problem with Yast2.

The bottom line is that the GPL allows software to outlive the companies that created, compiled, or sold the software released under this license.

And once governments and businesses begin to receive and understand the benefits of the GPL, they will be more perceptive of those entities that threaten it.

You have a good point. However, those with Linux knowledge will have a head start. I have provided a personal experience to explain my point:

My boss recentley asked one of the network admins to install Linux on a laptop just for testing, as a possible consideration for a company-wide client.

I'm not in a technical position, but I got a call from this network admin asking me, "I just installed Linux, but I can't login to the administrator account, can you help me?"

I went over and found that he had "administrator" in the login field. I tried not to laugh and explained it was not good practice to log into the X window system as root. After he logged in as root despite my warning, he wanted help logging into an NT domain. I mounted a Windows share for him using the command-line, but he didn't understand why you could not select the domain when the user first logged in.

This guy is very competent at his job, but even with all the Linux GUI tools, Linux still takes a different mentality. Once you have the grasp of that, you do o.k., but for some administrators, the shift is not an easy one.

The best part is that if you have friends or co-workers that use Bochs, you can share image files and configuration files, saving you the time of doing a full installation.
