When you are trying to fight cancer with an adenovirus, like a particularly nasty common cold, you get a mutated adenovirus that seems to copy itself only in cells that lack a functioning copy of a gene called p53 that repairs damaged or mutated DNA. If the DNA is then too smashed up to be repaired, p53 instructs the cell to self-destruct. Since cancer occurs when DNA becomes so badly battered that it stops regulating cell growth and behavior, it is not surprising p53 has stopped working in more than half of human tumors..
The thing is, OpenOffice combined with MS Office effectively killed all possible competition.
You have two flavors: a commercial flavor (MS), which is absolutely superior in ease of use and has an impressive feature list; and you have a free flavor (OO), which may not be as sophisticated but does the job quite well.
How is a third (unproven) office suite going to compete in that market? Impossible I say. I've seen startups based on plans like this go down faster than the time it took me to write this..
Joe Job [joa~juhb] A Joe job is an e-mail spoofing exploit in which someone sends out huge volumes of spam that appear to be from someone other than the actual source. A Joe job is sometimes conducted as an act of revenge on someone who reports a spammer to their Internet service provider (ISP) or publicly advocates anti-spam legislation. The perpetrator is said to be Joeing the legitimate owner of the e-mail address they use. The Joe job is one of the oldest spamming operations in existence, and one of the simplest ones to carry out: the spammer may not have to do anything more than change the "Reply To" address in their e-mail program.
I notified vereyone in my mail archive that my address had changed to myname@nospam.mydomain.com; then I changed the MX record for my root domain to 127.0.0.1:))))))
If you can get a local copy of the class file, you can decompile it, rearrange it and create a new binary with a different (or nonexistent) watermark.
If you make source code or the executable dependent on the watermark (bad idea) this can be easily circumvented as well (won't go into the tech details but it is easy to do)
Nothing is bullet-proof in the digital world. Get used to it;)

...blame the language instead of the ineptitude of the programmer
If there are litterally thousands of programmers using that language, all making this same error which is not intercepted by the language or the compiler, then yes: the language is flawed. And it is the fault of the programmer for choosing that language if things become messed up.
Remember that a programming flaw is still a flaw regardless of whether it's common or not
Again: if the flaw is very very common, tricking many programmers, then at least the compiler should warn. If the compiler cannot generate such a warning, the language is flawed and thus imperfect. And, as a result, people should continue developing new languages without any such flaws.
Anything exploitable can be exploited
Really?
The fundamental flaw in C and C++, IMHO, is that most large projects, after a while, become really bloated with ugly hard-to-read code and many design issues which in time become harder and harder to tackle. The only reason to use C is for pure speed. C# is IMO a pretty elegant solution by wrapping all Win32 C functions and structures in 'guaranteed' safe objects.
And so what happens when Microsoft decides to implement support for 1 one of those databases in version 1.2 that you are implementing support for in 1.0? And they implement this support in a slightly different manner than you are. Well, what happens is you either fork your code or break applications that depend on behavior in version 1.0.
Heck no, have you even tried C#/mono?
Their database provider maybe something like mono.Data.Oracle8COnnection, where the Microsoft
implementation is System.Data.Oracle8Connection .
They both implement a common interface.
Breaking that interface will render a **lot** of software broken, so that is not going to happen.
Who cares if MS brings its own provider, if you are already using mono's version and its working fine?
Other Interesting stuff:
MyRealBox [myrealbox.com] - Test bed for Novells Mail server development, checkout the license agreement [myrealbox.com] to get a free mail box, seriously, apparently you must pay $10 for every piece of spam you recieve in the box... Please correct me if you see it differently.
Bizarre. From the page:
User Agreement
I will not use this mailbox in any way associated with spam including sending spam through MyRealBox.com, using this address as a return address for spam or as a drop box. If I violate this agreement I subject myself to legal action and will be held financially responsible for every piece of spam that goes into or out of MyRealBox.com at the amount of $10 for every piece of spam.

And I thought Novell was ok!
Looks like someone's compiled a new CD with 50 zillion email addresses all in Australia!
Otherwise, it's all the spammers that fled the anti-spam legislation and decided to move to Australia with a 2 way satellite link.. spamming day & night
My Google Zeitgeist has someone named 'Aurelio Carboni' listed in two out of three top 10's!! WHO TF is this aurelio carboni?? I googled for a few minutes but could only find some programmer by that name. Are there people hacking the google spider, maybe?
Its definitely not in the Dutch (localized) Google. I tried up to a hundred combo's ranging from commonly well used words to rare words. Trying it on Google intl does have strange results, though.
My guess is that it's about common words that are *never* matched close to each other, and that the search engine has difficulty scoring these pages. Just a hunch.
Teacher: Hello, children. Today we have mr. Valenti of the RIAA to speak to you.
Class: "Hello, mr. Valenti."
Valenti: "Hello, children. Do you like music?"
Class: "Yes!"
Valenti: "Do you think the artist should get paid?"
Class: "Ofcourse!!"
Valenti: "Well, now, we have Stuart Smith here in the class room. Stuart?"
Stuart: *getting red* "..eehh yes sir?"
Valenti: "We scanned that you have at least 1000 illegally pirated mp3's Do you know that the artists are starving because you don't buy their records?"
Stuart: "errrrrr"
Valnti: "Did you notice how thin and skinny some of the artists have been lately? The hungry look in their eyes? The artists are dying, stuart!"
(in the classroom, the kids start showing signs with the text "-1, troll" on them)
JVMs running everywhere is such a non-issue I'm confused by you raising it. You are aware that there are multiple sources of JVMs, and they all work identically?
Yes. Try a 100 user machine. Each user running their own Java environment with swing apps etc. How many cpu's/memory will you need? (rethorical)
I could not agree more. Why is everybody so hyped about Sun? Lets see.
Java: it's the slowest language I ever seen. Even javascript is faster;). Write Once Run Anywhere is actually Write Once Debug Everywhere. Java does not integrate with anything at all that is non-java.
Servers: I have two sparcservers. They too are as slow as as a pair of snails. They make unbelievable noise and drain lots and lots of power. All their hardware is non-standard.
OS: I never liked sunos nor solaris. Their desktop has always been a joke. Remember OpenWindows? Solstice? or what about/opt/SUNWFDCG/var/usr/bin/essential-app ??? (sun users will know what I mean) I must say their servers are stable when you run oracle on it though;) However definitely not worth the price.
So what's the advantage of switching from a Microsoft OS to one from Sun? Since it's not free I actually feel it's a rip-off and a major vendor lock-in. JVMs running everywhere on your machine. I'll pass, thank you very much!
Sun is making profit over the open source community by selling free software bundled with their own.
The article is wrong. In C#, you can mark blocks as unsafe and use pointers or directly write in MSIL. Using this you can gain amazing performance gains.
According to microsoft, they have *never* *ever* needed multiple inheritance for a commercial software product(read in msdn). And they probably never will.
The.NET clr supports C++ (mixed native/managed), perl, eiffel, pascal, jscript, c#, vb, and more. These languages all have their own paradigms.
Just because the parent poster has programmed a whopping 30.000 lines in his life (I do that in a month or so) doesn't mean he's all-seeing and all-knowing. Java sucks big time. (to me). Ever tried mixing Java with, for example, php or perl? Or, calling java from c++ or.NET?

Wait just a minute.
Shoplifting is a crime. You are stealing solid property from someone who paid $$$ for the instances of that property.
Sharing music is (at highest) an offense like jaywalking. No solid property is stolen. No real money is lost.
Don't compare apples with pears!
No longer will our children be hindered by censorware to discover the REAL face of mankind (pr0n)
Here in gool 'ol Europe (afaik, ianal) kids cannot be prosecuted, at least not until they're 16. They will be fully responsible only at the age of 18.
Come on, you just can't set a twelve year old girl as an example! Give her a lecture and she'll run off to make a drawing. Sue her for $150,000???
I swear.. I'll never buy RIAA crap again.
