  1. Hooray! About time on President Bush To Call For Return To Moon? · · Score: 1

With technology now they can run the whole craft from that sinclair Z80. I remember watching the first moon landing, I would love to see another, even being 5, I still got a thrill of being able to look up and see then man on the moon.

  2. flex on Microsoft to Charge for FAT File System · · Score: 1

Is just a statement by ms that they do control the world. 250k is incidental for the producers of the product, its just ms starting to say follow me or it can get worse.

  3. tough choice on Galileo System To Include Jamming Capability · · Score: 1

In today's world it's a tough choice accept some degradation and a US backdoor or if needs require, or loose the system. You don't think the powers that be proved a way to destroy the system at will? Why else would something like this occur, think they were shown the facts and decided to gripe but following the line. Is this worse than them just quietly doing it, at least we know what happened (kinda)

  4. revisionism on Web Pages Are Weak Links in the Chain of Knowledge · · Score: 1, Insightful

Would be much more worried about if the site said the same thing. What about revisionism, I would wonder if the reference cited even said the same thing as what it was cited for, it's easy enough to change the pages so that they can be twisted to make the referencer look stupid (don't like their use of the reference) or to just out and out lie after they get referenced. Unless they are locked down, and we all know that is not really possible, someone somewhere will find their way in.

  5. how fast? should be how much can you loose? on Patching Paranoia - How Fast Do You Patch? · · Score: 0

company had fix for blaster decided not to install it, just waiting. Day of attacks lost 2 days complete for corporate offices, then probably a day a user over the next 2 weeks due to remote propagation. Luckily we dont do much at corporate (grin) but if this hit the stores, yikes! If you take just the salaries, this cost probably as much as 100k shortterm, plus the added new virus software and the added issues of that. Cheaper to be proactive.

  6. How about TV on RIAA Sues 12-Year Old Girl · · Score: 0

That's how most view the great internet, you can tape it watch it, sounds very similar. Have to remember how many people in the US really understand computers, just because they have one doent make it more than a electric paperweight. Music and mp3 were just something they could understand and actually use. The mother was alos actually supporting shareware, we should be happy about that!

  7. threaten the gov't, good move SCO. on SCO Targets US Government, TiVo · · Score: 0

Just wait on this one, let GW get advice to stomp the evil SCO. Hmm, who controls the patent office? Who controls the judicial system? Who can revoke every single patent back to the beginning of time? Who can by some process of emminent domain declare the whole thing null and void. If they thought jousting with IBM was pricking the elephant, wait thill they get some bored civil servant with half-a-brain to cancel the whole basis for the case and probably make them pay to clean-up the mess too.

  8. save money on The RIAA Hit List - A Pattern Emerges? · · Score: 0

Would it not save you money if you got a subpeona to run out to your records store, pay the 15 or 20 bucks for a cd for every song you are being snagged for, then go to court and say 'see here are my copies, i put it there for personnal use, i am a idiot for not securing my drive'. Case closed, you can live down stupidity of not securing drive, cheaper than the payoff.

  9. few percent? on Risk Management For Electronics on Aircraft · · Score: 0

In airline crashes, is not a few percent too many?

  10. Have you actually priced out development? on PeopleSoft Deflects Oracle Takeover, So Far · · Score: 0

Hmm, must be a manager or controls pay. Have speced out a few replacement systems in my time, you have to remember you buy a package, no matter what is is 80% or so of your current practices. Either you change your practices to the package and/or you make it work your way. Either way, maintaining a homegrown PY and HR package today is nuts unless you pay in a single jurisdiction (country, state, county, town) the tax jusisdiction thats provided would prove its value in no time alone. Unfortunately packages are a neccesity in todays environments, its the issues with the one you choose and how long it takes to install. The bloated packages we are talking about here take years, and may or may not work, but once you get on the slide down it is tough to get off. I have installed multiple packages for corporate hr and py and its all about need not the bells and whistles. people need to be realistic and controlled in what they need, not whats nice to have and get in too deep. ramble ramble ramble. Original spec was for a AP system for a company, if developed would have been 120k and 18 months, to buy the package was 30k and 6 mos. Which would be the better deal, needless to say, we did not get that contract, just a couple of dinners.

  11. Volkswagen Adventurer on Mailing Disks is Faster than Uploading Data · · Score: 0

1976(?) Volkswagen Adventurer. Slept 5, refridgerator stove, perfect part-y mobile. Also slept 2 nudge nudge. Curtains included.

  12. New country or price increase? on Using Closed Standards To Pay For Open Ones · · Score: 0

hmmm, which would happen faster 10% price increase on all software or the creation of the indian territory of seattle (Tir tanguire for you shadowrun fans). My bet would be on the new country, headed by big wappum Bill He-who-rakes-in-the-cabbage Gates

  13. be serious on Executing a Mass Departmental Exodus in the Workplace? · · Score: 1

Time for that is way past. In this situation it would be fun (in the cruel sort of way) to get everyone to follow, but think we need to be serious. In this market, no one is guaranteed (well very few) a job anymore. I just spent 13 months 'independent consulting' looking for a full time position; now you may be able to find a job quick, but think of the others that may not and unless you want to supplement their income, it sounds like a case where you start looking find and leave and let the chips there fall where they may. Just the search itself may be really eyeopening as to what it is like out there now.
