  1. What about TripAdvisor on Movie Studios Are Blaming Rotten Tomatoes For Killing Movies No One Wants To See (qz.com) · · Score: 1

It's like hotels blaming TripAdvisor for bad reviews leading to reduced business. Of course it has an impact because consumers have become, in general, more discerning about what they consume.

  2. Human cloning and estate taxes on Extinct Ibex Resurrected By Cloning · · Score: 1

Cloning is becoming more and more advanced. Human cloning will probably be achievable within the next 20 years. How long until Republicans back human cloning as a way to avoid estate taxes???

  6. Good use of resources on More Cringley on Linux Embedded Hardware Hacking · · Score: 5, Interesting

I must say, I am impressed by the Hauppauge device. It has really good functionality and a not-too-bad price tag. These exploits are really pretty interesting, and I am surprised that it took so long for them to become mainstream. I figure that it is only a matter of time before people start building specialized devices like the Hauppauge. Overall, this is one of those nifty hacks that I love.

  7. Privacy Issues on Mandatory Banknote Detection Code? · · Score: 1

As an American I find this idea abhorent. While against the counterfeiting of banknotes, I still feel that this government dictum is wrong. I really dislike the idea of government dictating which features are to be added to software. What's next: government dictating anti-piracy code to be added? Even though this may curb counterfeit bills, it also curbs personal liberty; I feel that this practice should be discontinued immediately.

  8. Interesting Concept on McCaw's Wireless ISP Begins Trial Run This Summer · · Score: 1

This seems to be one of those pilot ideas that won't exactly pan out. While the WiMax Point to Multipoint (P2MP) system is conceptually interesting, the question that remains is whether or not it can be successful on a large scale. It is my personal opinion that this first venture will likely not be successful, but only because it is so new and innovative. Look for more of these large-scale wifi networks to spring up all over the place in the near future.

Apple may offend certain groups, such as Linux Users, by not supporting the Ogg Vorbis system, however the majority of computer users will never even consider using this codec. I submit this for consideration: What Operating system has the largest desktop user market share? Windows, obviously, Apple does not need to support Vorbis because Windows users, in general, have no need for this.

Unfortunately, your libellious depiction of Coulter is just that. This argument is completely fallacious, and based completely on your political views. Coulter's book is amazingly well documented. All that needs to be done is to look at her SOURCES in the back of her book. Each controversial fact is linked to a definate source (i.e. the New York Times, or in this case, official documents). I would not be surprised if you never read the book, but rather spewed recycled hate on her. So, in essence, her "idiocy" over Bush's and Gore's grades were corroborated, and documented, and checked by the Publisher, etc. etc. Please, please, please don't rush to judgement on issues that you are not fully informed of!

  14. Kinda Cool on Toward a New Kind of Linux Distribution · · Score: 4, Interesting

This seems like a pretty good idea, I am sure that many people would adopt it. However, it sounds an awful lot like Linux From Scratch, or Gentoo. I'm assuming that a distribution like the one proposed must be a binary one to appeal to the masses.Overall, though, this sounds like a good way to attract more people to the Linux community.

  15. Oh man, my cell-phone got Microsofted! on Firmware Upgrades For Everything · · Score: 1

Boy oh boy, who didn't see this comming. It was only logical that consumer electronics would follow suit of software's "planned obsolescence". Cynic that I am, I see this being abused in the future : i.e. vaporware a la firmware. It stands to reason that a company could claim "compatibility" with a new feature, but not include actual functionality in the product, only the possibility. Possibilities are endless for this sort of shenanigan! One thing is for sure though, I bet Microsoft will begin manufacturing consumer electronics in the near future.

  18. Java, ok. on Sun Agrees to Talk to IBM over Open Sourcing Java · · Score: 2, Insightful

As of this moment in time I feel that Java suffices quite nicely, even if it is not open sourced at the moment. If you see what I mean, Sun makes Java freely available so there is no true reason to jump right in to open sourcing it. However, benefits to the language might occur by opening it up for reviews and suggestions by the community. As I see it, there is no rush, but it might be nice in the future.
