  1. Re:P2P actually does help artists on Indie Artists Support Peer To Peer · · Score: 1

Actually, that happened already: http://www.mp3tunes.com sells songs directly from independent artists. For an album you pay dollar 8,99. Artists receive 6 bucks. Yes, I bought a couple of albums.

  2. It saved the Dutch finance ministry on Adobe Reader 7.0 Coming to Linux · · Score: 1

the Dutch finance ministry ordered that al taxes of companies should be filed online. And for that, they use pdf forms. in parliament there were questions about Linux. In fact, Adobe saved the Dutch junior minister by a good timing of PDF Linux 7 :-)

  3. There are nuances on Bill Gates Talks about Belgian eID Card · · Score: 1

When I first read the message, my faced turned red. But after looking deeper into the matter, it might be not so bad.

First of all: the eID is there, with open standards. Microsoft is just the first big company that announces a use of it.

The idea of securing chatrooms is, well, a bit strange. But the eID, as the Belgs call it, does allow stuff like electronic voting and online exams, can enhance online banking, doing online business or logging into the server of your work.

The card itself is platform independent. Software for the cardreader is available for Mac, Java and even Linux. There is rather extensive guide (although written in 2003) for using the card together with for example Mozilla (pdf in dutch). Actually, they have made a four-languaged site about the eID

There are catches of course. The Belgs have to look out for identitytheft, although there is a hotline to disable a stolen card. And it would be nice if services that really do not need an online verification, would refrain from using it. (Like browsing in an online shop before you buy anything)

Oh, we do have to give the Belgs a bit more credit. They have Open Sourced their voting software and Open Source is a integrated part of their IT policy.

  4. Yeahronimo on US Company Buys Commodore Brand For $33 Million · · Score: 1

Actually, Yeahronimo is setup and owned by Dutch people. They only registered it in the US.

It is a digital media company (look at their homepage which is at http://www.yeahronimo.com/) which sells digital music, but also have sold sports content.

The foundation of this company was laid by people who where in the music branche forever. They are the owners of the famous Wisseloord Studios in Hilversum (in the Netherlands). In those studios not only Dutch artists recorded, but also famous international names like Elton John, Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, ELO, Simple Minds, The Police, The Cranberries, Stereophonics, Noa and Erykah Badu.

They have been playing with the idea Yeahronimo since I think 1998 but had serious troubles to get the licenses and technique right.

Them buying the Commodore brand might be actually a good thing. Don't forget Napster was dead too...

Well, I work with a web interface everyday (Tridion CMS) and I it is just plain slow. It uses MSIE and it looks great, has many features, but the rendering is slow and if the connection is not that good, MSIE hangs. You need a really fast computer with loads of internal memory to get it going.

Mozilla is undoubtely faster, but still...

  8. And Dutch ISP's can block all spammers on Spam Bits · · Score: 1
The high court in the Netherlands today has approved a scheme in with ISP's can block all spam to prevent littering their customers e-mailboxes. They can do so without prior approval of their customers. The case has been fought for years between ISP XS4ALL and notorious spammer Ab Fab.

Although I don't like the idea of having ISP's in control of what reaches my inbox, this still is good news.

  11. WOW! KDE with Evolution+Red-Carpet+Corel for Linux on Novell Announces Agreement to Acquire SUSE · · Score: 1

This could be great in the end. Provided Novell will combine everything:

    - Suse drops YOU and uses Ximian Red Carpet to update stuff (this has been my nr 1 wish for a looong time!)
    - Evolution
    - Corel for Linux
    - Joined themes
    - preferably a closer integration for KDE and Gnome (cut&paste!)

And Novell is planning to pay developers for Mozilla and OpenOffice...

Sounds like all the tools I use are bound to get better and integrated!

  13. Erhmmm... which new functions? on Microsoft Kills Off Mac IE, Blames Safari · · Score: 1

Everybody is raving about why IE would be better or not then Safari, but that really is not the question. Look at the future: Which functions would require that IE is incorperated into the OS? THAT really is the question. I think that MS would like to operate as a bank in the future: the company that not only sets the rules for online transactions by implementing features in the browser, but also by tightly integrating the hardware and software to create a trusted platform.

In other words: you only can buy something online if:
    A) you're using the new chip Intel wil make in near future
    B) are authorized through MS and their software and
    C) pay MS a fee for the service they are providing.

That way MS can make much, much more money then simply providing software. Apple is out of their reach in all three points mentioned, so work on a new version of IE/Mac would not lead to the new role I think MS is persuing, Safari or no Safari.

The big question is, will Apple (and Linux) be in the position to offer the same trusted computing as MS/Intel will be able to. And if not, would the user of not-IE-software public be able to do ANYTHING online in future, like wachting online movies, engaging in online banking or alter your own medical files...
