True, you can buy software packages. But it is not about the software (or it should not be about the software), it is about the service. Software never is 100% without faults. And those faults can be exploited. So, someone needs to tell the software user that there are faults and how to deal with it, untill there is a new version of the software. The IT securty service is like a nurse that puts a band aid on your bleeding knee untill the doctor has time to stitch it.

Well, that is not really true. Nations are sovereign because of international treaties and laws. If the gun was the only thing worth while, you wouldn't have countries like Luxemburg, or Costa Rica, that hasn't even got an army. (see wikipedia's list of armyless countries. Of course, the US has proved to be not really holding up to these treaties (Iraq), but even then did try to convince the UN that it was indeed starting a 'lawful' war overthere.

  15. UPDATE: the group talked with the department... on Dutch Securing E-voting After Being Pwned · · Score: 1

... and they are NOT content. The group said that the new measures seem to be in place to prevent them from checking up on other (types of) voting machines. They feel that it is absolutely necessary that they can check on the software used (the closed sourced Windows XP) and judge the whole voting procedure. The new measures prevent them from doing so.

Plus, they are still concerned about the fact that it is possible to 'hear' who voted what, because the nachine makes a noise every time someone votes. This is researched by the Dutch Secret Service right now, but it is not adressed by any of the new measures minister Nicolai has ordered. As it is required by law that voting should be possible in absolute secrecy, they think the next elections cannot use voting machines. Unless of course the issues are adressed, but that is not likely.

They are still considering to ask a judge to forbid the use of the voting machines in the next elections, to be held on the 22 of november 2006. If the judge complies, it is very thinkable that the elections will not take place in november, or even this year.

For those that can understand Dutch, Maurice Wessling of the group has given an interview (wma) to the Dutch national news broadcaster NOS saturday afternoon.

The Irish did a review of the system:

How can I justify to a friend that uses Linux on my advice that he cannot use the hardware he just bought? I can't, so I cannot advice Linux to others anymore. Principles are always great, but foir most, they may not cost money.

For me, I haven't give up just yet, but I am very close to do so. At least for this kind of hardware. I might buy another piece which might be more compatible with Linux, but I hate it that I have spend good money and loads of time for something that doesn't work. I like computers, but I really just want to get things done.

And this is the kind of story potential users will hear from 'us' Linux users: that the system might be very easy, but that you cannot buy a piece of hardware of software, and expect it to work just like that.
