    Except if you change the ram config (rather easy with my powerbook with 2 512MB chips)
    and reset the PROM 3 times in a row (hold down Command+Option+P+F)
    then password (and all other PROM settings) no longer exist.

    Apple actually licensed the QuickTime media format, for use as the MPEG-4 container.
    So I would guess they don't have to worry about paying for it!

    In the UK, if you want the forwarding address or contact address for a PO box,
    You just ASK the post office.

    So it doesn't protect against much, it just helps to categorize your mail.

    Open the root CA cert in Keychain Access and insert it into X509Anchors.
    I.E. Double-click the file in Finder and when Keychain Access asks where to place it, select X509 Anchors (Note the space in the Keychain Access version, its not in the actual filename.
    Works in Panther.

    You really cannot throw an OS/Platform into this discussion when that OS/Platform is on its way out the door.

    Thats a little harsh!
    VMS won't really be going anywhere as I can personally attest we use it a lot here in the bank.
    We have around 4 billion (4,000,000,000,000 GBP) flowing through SWIFT & ICPS each DAY.

    Although we may only represent one customer, thats one important customer!

    I work for the 4th largest bank in the world, so I guess the others probably represent significant VMS usage.

    Not to mention JSTARS and COE...

    Oracle don't just make a Database, they consult and design...

    It took 10 months to design the data model....
    Not the sort of thing you do in 20 minutes with SQL CREATE statements!

    No major vendor even comes close to bringing this level of value, longevity and investment insurance.

    I guess you don't consider IBM Mainframe OSes (zOS aka MVS).
    Also DEC VMS (VAX) runs progs compiled for VMS 1

    I'm not trying to be a troll, but how many people in the UNIX world forget there are other enterprise OSes........

    QuickTime (from Apple) is only available for Mac and Windows

    Anything other than Apple Software using the QuickTime trademark would not really be real QuickTime....

    NB: The quicktime4linux lib doen't work with much, it only works with Uncompressed content....

    That would be because QuickTime only runs on Mac and Windows.

    When Apple ported QuickTime over to Windows, they had to port almost all the ToolBox routines over as well.
    Which meant that any developer could port their Mac Application to Windows, just by using the QuickTime ToolBox routines.......
    So Apple asked them not to do it......

    Take a look at EZcleaner, they broke Apples plea, and ported over to Windows by using the QuickTime DLLs.

    Which would let them update to Panther for the cost of the media.

    FileVault is an encrypted disc image that is automatically mounted when you login.
    It uses AES encryption (128 bit)
    Its been written within Apple, using existing Apple technologies.
    Using Disc Utility you can do the same on Jaguar, except Panther and FileVault make it very easy to do....

    Don't forget that Virtual PC is emulating the CPU and VMware is virtualizing the CPU.

    Thats why there is a Virtual PC for Mac (PowerPC) and no VMware for Mac.

    VMware is a lot similar to IBM's z/VM, in that non-privileged CPU instructions run directly on the hardware.
    Think VM assists in MVS (ala z/OS).

    So VMware will always be faster, but will never leave the x86 arch in its current form.

    Virtual Server for Windows was in (early) beta when MS bought Connectix.

    You do realize that OpenOSX just took Fink and produced their GIMP package.

    I don't think that is fair at all.
    It even caused the primary devloper of fink to resign because he was fed up of people stealing his stuff, without credit.

    Well this only applies to single user licenses, which are NOT allowed to be shared.

    The multiuser / site licenses don't check for duplicates.

    It's not as if SCO ever had anything (ever) to do with it.....
    Hmm, IBM invented it, and SCO UNIX don't run on PPC...

    I am vaguely aware that the DECUS (DEC user group) kept VMS going on their own while Digital then Compaq then HP tried to decide if it was profitable or not. I think the obstinate customers who insist on something reliable have swayed HP now.

    What planet are you on? VMS makes a huge amount of money.

    Just look at Intel, they use VMS to fab all their processors, they might be a little irrated to discover cHumPaq killed VMS.
