Mac OS X 10.3.3 Update Released
joelhayhurst writes "Mac OS X 10.3.3 is now available via Software Update. Full details are available on the Apple site - key enhancements include: 'Network volumes are now available in the Finder sidebar and Desktop for easier access... Improved file sharing and directory services for Mac (AFP), UNIX (NFS) and PC (SMB/CIFS) networks... Improved PostScript and USB printing... Updated Disk Utility, DVD Player, Image Capture, Mail and Safari applications... Additional support for FireWire and USB devices... Improved compatibility for third party applications... Previous standalone security updates and Bluetooth Update 1.5."
Funny. I was downloading the update only a few minutes before this article was posted.
:(
I sure do hope the improvements to the SMB protocol are substantial. I've had no end of problems using it to access SMB shares on Windows and Unix.
You're right, I wouldn't steal a car. But if it were possible, I sure as hell would download one!
When ever I used a network share and I changed something from the server or from another computer I'd have to play with the finder for a long time to get it to refresh.
I happen to like the icon preview and I had it on globally by default. The first time I hooked up my digital camera the finder jumped to 100% cpu usage and stayed that way even after generating all the thumbnails.
I'm glad they're fixing these bugs.

I'm just this guy, you know?
They STILL haven't fixed the Mail.app bug that i probably submitted in October last year. If you use a mail server with imap-ssl that doesn't have a verified certificate, you get a pop up complaining whenever you open mail. If you click show certificate, there's a certificate icon you can supposedly drag to the desktop and then use in keychain according to apple's support webpages. Well, dragging that image still crashes Mail.app (and hard).
I always figured "complete crash" bugs were high priority. sigh.

Anyone know if the bug with Energy Saver not working on mondays is fixed? I don't know when I'll get to update my machine and am curious if this was tended to. They didn't mention it in the support document, but it's such a minor bug anyway...

I'm having the darndest problems with wake-from-sleep on my 1GHz AlBook 15.
1) Sometimes (10% of the time?) I just get a black screen on wake and have to reboot (CAPSLOCK key LED turns on/off though...so it ain't "dead").
2) Disabling my Bluetooth mouse and kbd reduces the frequency of this occurring but doesn't eliminate it.
3) When wake succeeds, sometimes I spontaneously lose my Bluetooth connections
4) When wake succeeds, I have to manually make my Airport Extreme card connect to my 802.11b WAP.
5) For the life of me, I cannot keep my Airport Extreme card from disconnecting from my WAP whenever I use Fast User Switching.
C'mon, Apple, fix these please...

Nothing broken so far in this update...
Yeah, I know, I know. You were expecting a 20th Anniversary Mac, but this will have to do. I'm sure Steve had a keynote presentation in Moscone Center solemnly unvealing a 10.3.3 box raising out of the stage floor ... OK, I'll stop now.
Anyone know if it has the same bug as the 10.3.2 update? ...that would be the one where you can't mount disk images
i dont know if a posting on /. counts as filling a bug report.
-- ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space!
The 10.3 Finder's Network Browser now seems to be finished:
1 - Connected servers now appear on the Desktop and in the Sidebar when the preferences have been set for this option.
2 - Connected servers can be ejected via normal means.
3 - Password options are now present including Keychain functions.
4 - User folders no longer appear twice.
I'm a happy camper.
Also, a blurring problem when in edit mode in iPhoto 4 appears to be fixed as well.
Nope, this year some people say they would like a model celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Macintosh, not Apple Inc.
Careful while installing. I finished updating via software update on my DP800G4 and hit "restart" when it asked me to.. nothing happened
:)
went into Apple > Restart.. nothing happened
tried Apple > Log off, Shutdown, and restart again.. nothing happened
Then I started quitting all my applications and noticed my CPU monitor read 100% on both CPUS and was going between 50 and 100% every 2 seconds.. so I quit the finder..
The finder then proceeded to quit then restart every 5 seconds for about 3 minutes until I just hit the emergency restart button on the front of the case
After that, it took 3 times as long to start back up again, during which time I planned what I'd write in this post
My 12inch pb 1ghz does not boot anymore, just boots to a kernel panic. Time for a fresh install.. good thing i was a windoze user before a mac user.

Ok, I give up. I have NFS volumes exported/mounted across a few Linux systems (no issue). OS.X mounting the same Linux NFS mount can only handle 2.something gig files (it's bigger than 2 and smaller than 3 is all I know right now).
/. ideas out there?

Just updated. Nothing broken so far. Waiting to see if they fixed my top bug, which is that finder often hits 100% cpu use without doing nothing and i have to kill -9 it. Don't know what triggers it, but probably is related to having special view options like keep arranged by name, or something weird when receiving files over amsn. I reported the bug, but my .mac trial expired so i dont longer have access.

I realize that Apple doesn't officially acknowledge problems with the OX911 chipset (only the 922), but does anyone know if they have fixed the bug yet?
All other bugs are low priority for me, as I have a TiBook and external storage that needs to be accessed - RELIABLY!
Wohoo!
I was actually a beta tester, so this has been working for me for a while, but my number one bug in Jaguar and Panther is officially fixed. WINS resolution now works for SMB network browsing!

Anyone know if they fixed this problem yet? I know that back when I was still using osx (way back in the days of 10.2), sometimes you could empty the trash and *lose* free space, while copying / downloading / duping files would *increase* free space.
Come to the University of Mars! Classes starting soon!
Can you browse through the directories under a share without actually mounting it yet (I haven't checked this since 10.2 since that's about when I ditched my PB) ?
Wow... That's quite a list of updates for Panther. I'm diggin' it. While other OS "updates" fix security holes and such, this seems on par to qualify for another major upgrade that we could pay for. Lucky for us, it's not. I'm quite impressed by the number, the breadth, and the depth of these updates. Way to go Apple!

i get exactly the same behaviort, but i don't think the machine is asleep becausde it gets *hot* it has continued even after reinstalling 10.3, and this machine isn't doing or connected to anything unusual. i've tried the usual tricks but....
I use an old lexmark E210 printer with osx. When i upgraded to panther, i would have to turn off and on the printer to print with ghostscript and samsung gdi printer drivers from linux printing.org. Now, everything acts normally and i dont have to turn off the printer.
Can anyone confirm whether uControl (or Doublecommand) still work? Or do I need to wait for an updated release? Thanks!
Is it only me, or are all Java-based apps now unusable? I tried a few and they all start (show up on the dock) then disappear. I haven't done anything to Java external to Apple's updates to make this happen. Not critical as I don't really use Java that much, but I do have a couple of handy ldap tools written in Java that would be nice to get working again.
Here's hoping the mysterious freezing bug a lot of people have experienced, including me, is fixed. It was evidently introduced in 10.3.2.
Alas, you still must mount the server first. Although much improved, the network browser is still not as good Windows (God, it pains me to say that since networking on Mac's used to be sooo easy). Also, I just discovered that once mounted, you can't browse the files from the Network icon, only from the Sidebar or Computer. Jeez! One step forward and two back. Oh, well.
I updated my Quicksilver at work and had it save the update. Update went fine, so I copied it to my 15" AL PB. When I start the installer on the PB, it runs the 'little program' then goes to the list of updates. Then the buttons on the install screen die, and I have to force quit out of the installer.
Leery to install, but perhaps it's because I didn't do the software update version.
Performance doesn't seem to be lacking on the QS, but I didn't give it a good run-through either.

/Network browsing include: Servers appear on the desktop and in Finder window Sidebars, AFP Authentication options are available, and you can disconnect a server by dragging its icon on the desktop to the Trash or by clicking the Eject icon in the Sidebar. .Mac and your computer. .Mac no longer attempts to automatically sync files over a wireless network (or "hotspot") before the computer is authorized to use the network.
.
These are some of the enhancements that are part of Mac OS X 10.3.3 Update.
Networking and
Addresses issues, such as a lost network connection, that could occur when connecting to a network device that forces the network speed and/or duplex setting (known as a "locked" device).
AppleTalk Browsing is now on by default.
Resolves an issue in which name conflicts could occur among Network Service Entities.
Available servers can be seen when browsing Windows Workgroups or Domains.
Enhancements to
Improves synchronization between
Enhances an Open directory plug-in, which is used in network environments: The Active Directory plug-in is no longer sensitive to the case of the domain; the plug-in now works in ".local" domain environments; the plug-in is now less sensitive to DNS records that don't have matching reverse lookup.
Improves compatibility with certain third-party wireless networking PC cards, such as the Honda AH-G10. More...
Enhances the IrDA menu item when IrDA networking is active.
Finder and applications that allow you to browse the file system will now refresh the contents of a remote network volume's folder or directory when the folder's contents change.
DVD Player enhancements
DVD Player will no longer quit if an unsupported PCI video card is installed in your computer. More...
DVD Player supports more DVD video discs that are designed to play automatically.
Improved DVD playback when "Digital Audio Output" is selected in DVD Player preferences.
DVD Player now recognizes and plays DVD+R media.
Application enhancements
Images retain their characteristics when you import them in iPhoto. More...
Addresses an issue in which Mail could unexpectedly quit when marking some types of unsolicited messages (or "spam") as Junk.
Addresses issues that may cause Address Book and other applications to unexpectedly quit if the Classic Mac OS fonts are disabled in Font Book.
Text shadow opacity and color are saved in RTF documents and preserved when you copy or paste.
Image Capture can now import files whose names begins with an underscore character ("_")
Finder enhancements
Improves security by requiring an administrator to authenticate for each Finder action that needs authentication, such as installing software. In earlier Mac OS X Panther versions, an administrator who authenticated may have unknowingly given elevated priviledges to the non-admin user for 5 minutes. This change also prevents a normal user from performing administrator actions if an administrator user has authenticated during their session.
When you use an Open menu command to choose a file in Finder or an application, the flashing button now says "Choose" instead of "Open".
Addresses an issue in which Finder unexpectedly quits if the View menu option "Show icon preview" is enabled while dragging a significant number of icons to another location.
Other enhancements
Improvements in start up time that some computers experienced under some installations of Mac OS X 10.3.2 Update. More...
Improves print operations when a pending print jobs is moved to the queue of a printer that has different capabilities. More...
Improves recognition of Hi-Speed USB devices by PowerBook G4 and iBook G4 computers when woken from sleep.

I think what we all wanted was the old Finder back, not this NeXT "browser" thing. Or at least an option (OK, sometimes I like the column view). At least with Windows Explorer I pretty much understand it and it pretty much works consistently. But the OS X Finder is just a mess.
So I'm still waiting for a new Finder (maybe , PLEASE, in OS XI?). Until then, it's Path Finder for me... (which still is nothing like the pre-OS X Finder).
This is a nice detail for PowerBook users. One persistant annoyance with OS X on PowerBooks for programmers has been the way it forces you to hold down the fn key to use the function keys. If you don't hold it down then you get, for example, the brightness or volume controls. This is really annoying to programmers, who typically have macros bound to function keys and need them infinitely more often than the brightness controls. There have been a variety of hacks, such as uControl, to enable "real" function keys.
With the 10.3.3 update there's a new checkbox in the keyboard preferences pane labeled "Use the F1-F12 keys for custom actions". If you check it then you get "real" function keys, where holding down fn gives you the brightness, sound, etc controls. Kudos to Apple for this -- it's always nice to be able to drop a hack in favor of an official feature!
I updated an hour or so ago and just realized that the hard drive bay fan on my dual 2 is spinning SIGNIFICANTLY FASTER!!! This is fantastic, really.

If you use MySQL on OS X Server, you might want to read the Knowledge Base article about the
update before you install it. Here it is:
Additional Information for MySQL
Data stored in MySQL databases with the version of MySQL that is pre-
installed Mac OS X Server 10.3.2 or earlier must be exported and re-imported
in order to be compatible with version of MySQL that is pre-installed on Mac
OS X Server 10.3.3, in which a byte-ordering issue is fixed.
As with any upgrade install, you should back up your old data. In this
particular upgrade, the following process is recommended to convert the data
to the correct byte ordering:
Before the upgrade, use the terminal to export the data from your pre-10.3.3
database:
# mysqldump -p table > backup-file.sql
or
# mysqldump --opt database > backup-file.sql
After the upgrade, and after initializing the MySQL database, import the data:
# mysql -p table backup-file.sql
or
# mysql database backup-file.sql
.. you'll have to update it again. Just in case any here might have hacked it as I have; ie: switch where dynamic_pager points to for swap creation (have a separate UFS non-journaled partition). It appears it's been overwritten again, as can happen with the system updates (not whining, just fyi'ing).
loose != lose: My belt is too loose, thus I'll lose my modesty shortly.
I just installed the update and DNS is being a bit weird. I can look up hosts in any domain except my own. Dig is working just fine, and as far as I can tell dig and the system's resolver are sending the exact same network traffic. I'm wondering if our DNS is configured incorrectly.

Does anyone else have that problem after updating?
Of particular interest to audio professionals, this update includes native mLAN support.
mLAN is a standard developed by Yamaha which allows lots of audio and MIDI info to travel over FireWire.
Yamaha's hottest new box, the 01X, has been without OS X drivers since it began shipping a month ago, and as of today it will finally work (in theory anyway)...
Of course time will tell how effective this new version of mLAN will be in terms of latency and stability. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some downloading to do!

I wonder if they fixed whatever it was that was stopping Safari working with Hushmail (http://www.husmail.com/); the web-based encrypted email server.
They claim it should work on Mac now, with the latest Safari and Java versions, but it won't for me.
I am doing a backup before upgrading - it'll be a little while yet before I can try it.
Max.
If anyone installs the 10.3.3 update while using OS X software raid stripe setup be aware that you may not be able to boot into the system, it will give you a kernel panic error / screen. The way to get around this is to reset the NVRAM / PRAM. For those of you that don't know it's command / option / p and r during boot up.
A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) panel is available in Energy Saver preferences, as well as a UPS menu bar item, when a UPS power management system is connected to the computer. Overall support for UPS systems is improved.
Does anyone have any information about this? What UPS makes/models are supported?

I hope they fix it soon - its great to be able to leave your phone on silent in your jacket pocket, so you can use your headphones...
If Jesus wants me it knows where to find me.
Yank the added memory and reboot. I had a number of kernel panic probs with the same model due to the memory stick I'd added.
In case any one is interested, you can run Software Update (remotely, if you wish) just by running the "softwareupdate" command from your terminal window.

Anti-aliased lines have long been borq'n under Panther, but no longer! AA lines now work properly with both my GF4MX card and Powerbooks Radeon 9600 (Maya & C4D).
I'll elaborate a bit on the other reply.
The problem is likely that the pagefile has grown, or you have downloaded something, and the finder has yet to update the counter. Thus, if you empty your trash and it contains less trash than the free space has decreased, the result will be as you described.
I routinely use either the CLI or, if I'm feeling false laziness, I create a folder, trash it, and empty the trash.
It was a feature of Mac OS 9, yes.

Figures...a week after I figure out how to manually add a CUPS printer with a username and password embedded in the smb://... URL, they fix the damn browser so it prompts for a password (before, it would try to enumerate printers anonymously and the result, at least on our Win2k Server, is that it wouldn't even see the server--I couldn't even click on it to get prompted for a username/password pair).
:)
However, I am happy that it works now.
I just installed the update about a half-hour ago, and upon trying to launch Mathematica 5.0.0, I was greeted with the registration screen. I went through it and the program generated a different machine number than it had before (I checked it against the old one in the email). Did anyone else have this problem?
Nah, just kidding.. everyting works fine

I have the same problem, and I submitted a bug report to apple on this already. Have you tried this method also? They seem to ignore my bug reports...
I've had a great set of experiences w/ Norton's 2003 bootable CDROM disk doctor. I dev some low level stuff on my PB 17" causing me to do reset or shutdown... Needless to say, my disk develops issues now and then (lately, 1% of the icons would be wrong or garbled). Anyway, since using the Norton 2003 CD, i've had a perfect recovery.
Separately, the utility suite it installs is bloaty and unnecessary. (have there even been any Mac OS X viruses worth mentioning yet over the years?). Just buy/get the CD and have it handy if you ever need to check and/or repair your disk.

I've used an external 911 Firewire drive since Panther came out. No problems with it.
Yes there was a bug with 911 but in contrast to the one with 922 it affected only a very small number of users (which is probably why they didn't acknowledge it).

Actually, no. It's not. MacUpdate is far superior. Why?
Sorry, but versiontracker blows goats. Switch to MacUpdate, and don't look back- it's just so much friendlier to deal with.
As to Macintouch, it's turned from a useful news site with intelligently written, objective blurbs about new software releases and interesting news items, to Non Stop Press Releases And Whining Users Chock Full Of Ads. I go to MacFixit forums for whining users(or when I need to whine), and MacUpdate for software update news(well, actually- I don't. I use their "notify me of new updates" email service most of the time save when I'm curious as to what new programs are out there). Don't get me started about the incessant reminders of how we should buy everything from Amazon through his affiliate links, or the text ads at the bottom of the page designed to trick users into thinking they're MacinTouch content and not paid-for ads. Ric, old boy, you've gone from doing what you do best(Mac news analysis) to competing with people who are years ahead of you and selling out in the process.
If you want slightly more interesting daily mac news and only 1-2 ads, MacResource has usually played second fiddle to Macintouch, but I have always preferred it. Just seemed more...down to earth.

Can anybody try to alert Apple people at bugreport.apple.com? You need to be an Apple Developer to post and I am not. FYI, this bug may appear as early as 10.2.4 (maybe even earlier, I've been having it since 10.2.6) and it seems all up to 10.3.2 are affected.
Surprised you've had a good experience with Norton. A lot of service centers won't even touch a machine if Norton is installed, with all the damage it tends to do.
In answer to your question, no, there are no viruses, trojans, or worms for OS X. For OS 9 and below, there are about 200 total, from System 1 to OS 9, mostly MS Word macro viruses. (MS software again the cause of holes in a system)
My main machine hasn't had AV software on it since SAM in 1992 or so. 12 years without AV software? I must be nuts! No, just careful. Users, properly trained, will almost never do something damaging to their system without trying to find out more about it first.
Techtool 4 is the best app for this sort of thing, and does all that Norton promises cleanly, without making a mess of your system.
Any and all Norton software packages are useless for the Mac.
But do you have the nuts (heh!) to go AV SW free on Windows for 10+ years? I do use TrendMicro's Housecall (active-X control, the only other reason to open IE besides windowsupdate) on files I can't absolutely trust, but no AV software will ever be installed on my Windows machines. The AV scanner on my FreeBSD mail server takes care of pretty much all of the Windows virus problems.

First, I want to make it clear I'm a hobbyist developer... not a professional.
t ml ) and found that OpenGL's the culprit. There's nothing I can do about it! At least not that I know of. My OpenGL code's not the best in the world, but it's simple and fast and caches all geometry in display lists and so on and so forth. I spent a fair amount of time profiling and optimizing already.
So, after reading largely good comments about this update I installed it on my laptop, my development machine. I'm developing a simulation framework for development/testing of behavioral AI agents. The simulator uses the ODE physics engine for dynamics and OpenGL for visualization. Ho hum. Only 10'000 CS students have done the same thing. But this one is mine.
I'll be the first to admit I'm not a professional OpenGL programmer. I'd never written a line before June 2003, but I did the Right Thing and bought the _Red Book_ and went through it from nape to nuts. I also made the requisite vists to NeHE and gamasutra for performance tips.
Anyway, until I installed 10.3.3 my opengl code amounted for a whopping 5 to 10 % of my program's running processor time. In other words, no problem. The physics engine took up another 10 to 30% and that left *plenty* for the separately threaded AI logic. It worked beautifully on my rev A PB 12" -- most of my simulations ran at 100% "simulation/real" time. Which is to say, I set a fixed simulation timestep to 0.05 seconds, allowing for opengl @ 20fps and 20 synchronized physics steps per second. Enough to be "smooth" but not so much as to take away too much processing time from the AI. This on average left 2 or so millis per frame for AI logic, if you want to think of it in a single threaded way.
Immediately ater installing 10.3.3 my average performance dropped to 35% to 50% "real" time. Meaning my average simulation timestep was taking not 0.05 seconds but at least 0.1 or more. No good.
I sharked it ( http://developer.apple.com/tools/shark_optimize.h
I'm so frustrated... I used to be able to run my simulations in real time but now I can only site and watch it crawl ( and listen as my PB's fan kicks in ). Considering it often takes several minutes observation to determine if a new behavior has improved or ruined an agent's performance, it's quite a pain to have to wait at least twice as long.
Let's just hope that this is a dorked driver, and apple releases an update. & perhaps, I can somehow dig up the 10.3.2 opengl drivers somehow.
Oh well. Since I love cocoa programming, and since I love my PB, and since I drank Steve's Kool-Aid long ago, I still love apple.
What would love be if the object of your affection didn't disappoint you now and then?

What's funny is I always run for the update anytime I see an announcement like this, then when the "Shutdown or Restart" dialog comes up, I just ignore it and continue going about my business thinking I'll reboot at the first available opportunity. Guess what - it's been over two weeks since the last time I ran software update, and I still have not rebooted - the SU is just sitting somewhere in the background waiting for me to answer...

I continue to have the same problem, viz., when I click on Network in the Finder sidebar, I see the Windows shares on the network sporadically at best. Yesterday, they showed up fine. Today, they don't show up. I'm sure tomorrow they'll be back. Nothing is changed on the network or the Windows box. The one improvement I like is being able to eject the mounted shares. In 10.3.2, pressing eject or dragging to the trashcan did nothing. Now at least when the drives do show up, they can be ejected.
If like me, you forgot to do this and your dates were hosed, there's a relatively easy way to recover (if you have a spare hard drive/partition/iPod).
/var/mysql and/or mysql and make a list of your current databases (folders) (mine are all aliased elsewhere with ln -s). Copy/back up these databases just in case!!! Copy them to somewhere you'll be able to see them once you're running 10.3 from the new drive (I used my /Volumes/data partition; otherwise they'll be in /Volumes/(10.3.3 drive)/var/mysql ).
/var/mysql. You may wish to go into mysql and check that they're there and the dates are ok.
From 10.3.3, go to
Reinstall OSX 10.3 (base) on the spare drive. Bring up mysql (I just used Applications/Server/Mysql Manager). Run mysql -u root (it has no default password, and I didn't bother setting one for this temporary use). In mysql, create an empty database for each of your existing databases (I don't know if this is required but I seem to remember needing to do it before). Exit mysql. Delete the empty databases you just created, and then copy your production databases from wherever you put them, to
Export (dump) the databases to sql files as detailed above. Make sure they're somewhere that's accessable from your 10.3.3 install. Reboot to 10.3.3 (System Preferences/Startup Disk). Import the databases as detailed above.
Do the happy dance. (Or if you're me, realize you just wiped out good data with old backups, curse, copy and paste good data from Google cache, wipe sweat from brow).
