  1. The only thing lamer than this verdict on Psystar Crushed In Court · · Score: 0, Troll

The only thing lamer than this verdict is reading PJ crowing over it at Groklaw. It was great when SCO, a genuine bad guy, was getting kicked around. However in this instance her smug self-righteous I-told-you-so BS is even more obnoxious than the triumph of the EULA.

I've found the consumerist does a great job of making things like this heard.

The point is that noone could really make themselves care that they showed a mock-up rather than the real product. When they hook it to a monitor and claim that they're showing it in action, THEN I'll give a rat's ass about the hardware in their silly little hands. THEN maybe you'll see outrage if they use a fake. This is, as described above, a non-issue. All this ado over nothing makes me wonder if ATI doesn't have an astroturfing campaign going on or something. (disclosure: I use ATI cards, mostly)

  4. Re:only if your credit is not so great on New York Sues Dell for Poor Customer Service · · Score: 1

Allow me to point you to a relevant point within the article you may have missed: "In practice, however, the vast majority of consumers, even those with very good credit scores, were denied these deals. In a classic "bait and switch" scheme, DFS instead offered consumers financing at high interest rates, which often exceed 20%. Dell and DFS frequently failed to clearly inform these consumers that they had not qualified for the promotional terms, leaving many to unwittingly finance their purchase at high interest rates."

Actually what you've heard is wrong, nanonine is on the money. The defenders were ordered to keep mashing the login button "so they would get back in first". This doesn't work, the attackers were first in because they had the first places in queue after the defenders retried.

Poor pacman on prozac forgets to add that it was the defending corp (Lotka Volterra, currently pirating in low-sec space now hehe) that were attempting to crash the server deliberately in a failed attempt to keep people out. They accused the attacking corp of cheating instead, but once LV's forum logs came to light (where they discussed how to use anchored large bubbles to crash the node)they performed a retrograde maneuver.

  7. There's always a compromise on Microsoft Worried OEM 'Craplets' Will Harm Vista · · Score: 0

If forced I'd side with MS on this one, the bloatware that OEMs pile onto the new systems is crippling. However if MS wants to do this without infringing on the OEMs rights to change the product and individualize it as they see fit, they should just negotiate that the manufacturers must also include a base-level OS install disk so that people can choose to change it with ease if they see fit. Media is cheap.

  9. a question of motives on Spyware Floods in Through BitTorrent · · Score: 1

I'm sure it's just a coincidence that the instant MS starts marketing a p2p product, they "find out" that sometimes files hosted using bittorrent can include a spyware installer. Under all the cleverly phrased descriptions, this article is basically just telling us that software can be sent using BT. How is this news?

  10. Re:A feel a little attitude in this article on Something Awful on G4TV · · Score: 1

I get the feeling you're not all that familiar with SA. They always come off as bitter, that's their "thing". They don't bother reviewing anything they like, hence their name. Their front page is a rant, nothing more. A well-founded rant in most cases, such as this one.

  12. Linux adoption in other countries on NSA Releases Updated SELinux · · Score: 1

I'll leave all the assumptions of motive to those who will pretend they know, but won't this be a sticking point to adoption in countries who are looking for security and may not be trusting of our government or our NSA? While the changes are GPL'd and therefore must disclose source code, read back up the page if you don't think the NSA has something close to mythical stature in many eyes. Tin foil hats aside, appearances matter, especially to bureaucracies where (wonder of wonders) there may be a chance of someone making high-level decisions without reviewing millions of lines of source code first. Before flaming, note that my hymnal comes from your church. This is merely a discussion point.

  13. Old, old news. on Norton Antivirus 2004 Ad Blocking - Tough Call? · · Score: 1

This feature has been included with NIS since before they bought the firewall from AtGuard, and it's been the leading reason behind my choice of firewalls. While putting loopbacks in your host file works just as well, it's far less convenient than dragging it to the "Ad Trashcan" in the Norton Internet Security toolbar. Frankly i'm surprised there's a debate here. Any slashdotters going to try and tell me they don't fast-forward past commercials on taped programs? Sights i frequent regularly i make a point of turning it off and clicking on their banners (fark, /. and SA), but when i use my computers at home with NIS ad-blocking, then use a laptop at work without it, it drives me nuts trying to read past all the stupid animated crap. i don't have any intention to try and shock the monkey to win the prize, so why bother having to stare at it?
