They also admit it in their little poem at the bottom... that's not what is important
what is important is the fact that they are offering google type features in an OS style interface. Their homage to OSX is to make a google interface that mimics it. That's what is interesting. The fact that they have begun to create google/os parallels.
The fact that the battery is necessary doesn't mean this isn't worth looking at. Same argument could be made about the shuffle's lack of a display.
Sony and Apple have made their compromises to get the cost down. It all depends on what you are willing to give up. Is never dealing with batteries worth losing a display to you? Is having a display worth buying a AAA every 70 hours (although I NEVER believe sony's battery life estimates)
Still, having batteries required isn't always a bad thing. Even if it is only worth half that (35 hours) that is still a lot better than the shuffle, AND you don't need a computer to recharge it. There are definite positives and negatives to either one, but I don't think you can dismiss this offhand just because it requires a battery.
Obviously sony isn't about to challenge the shuffle with a unit running 200 pounds+. Their real shuffle competition is $150 US, has a gig of space, and a display. It needs a AAA battery to run but does NOT have FM radio.
They have already heavily modified Redhat for their own uses, so they know it inside and out. Could google be the group that finally gives us a distro with the ease of entry to lure away the windows crowd?
it is how businesses work. Microsoft has made a living doing this. Ken Lobb went to Microsoft from Nintendo to help the XBOX. Heck, Microsoft buys COMPANYS to prevent them from working with rival organizations (See Rare).
Google is company located in the United States. The fact that people around the world use it does not change the fact that Google is a US company. It is their choice what language they provide content in.
If a French company became the world wide source for information I see no reason why they should be attacked for providing content in anything but French. Don't attack google for being successful here. Instead why not try to help some business in your own borders.
Kenwood offers a media server that sets up a network through your telephone lines. You have to buy 'Axcess'(sp) points to pull the data streams out but they work nicely.
will get.... The suit is against false advertizement. I'll bet you either get the Pan and Scan version of the DVD, or a DVD (Maybe even your old one) with a corrected label. I doubt very much they corrected all 325 of these things within this time frame.
My SSID is Hail Mary (flyin through the air). The home network is Gridiron. The main PC I use is HeadCoach, the Linux Web Server is PlayBook. The Laptop is WideReceiver, and the secondary PC is QuarterBack. I plan to set up a cluster named after O linemen.
the way I see it, I'm not voting for a governor of New York. Why should I be lumped in together with the others voting here? I'm not voting with issues like Upstate vs NYC development or Thruway upkeep on my mind. I'm voting with things like Stem Cell research, Iraqi Policy, and national economy in mind.
when you get to the votes that COUNT, mine is gone. My vote is thrown away in an unnecessary granularity switch.
Yes I voted, but I honestly don't understand why I bothered. I live in a state that is as far from battleground as possible and voted for the 'other guy' When the electoral college takes over and casts their lot with the overwhelming majority here my vote will be thrown on the floor. Ignored.
I don't see how I am not being disenfranchised here. Yes I know slashdot leans toward the liberal side, but it can't be that hard to understand how I feel... Voting Republican in New York is the same as voting Democratic in Texas. You don't count. When it's all said and done, you simply don't count. I can't be the only person who feels this way. Why is my voice meaningless simply due to some silly boundary drawn on a map? Can anybody give me a good reason why we don't use the popular vote... aside from the fact that politicians will no longer be able to ignore those of us in states that aren't 'battleground' ones?
and SHAME on Colorado for turning down that bill that would split their EC votes based on the popular vote. Give yourself a voice people!

I made due with 2 8 meg PS2 cards for 4 years. Why not have an 128 megs of internal flash and not deal with mem cards at all.
The obvious answer is the marketing. There is good money to be had in those flash cards they sell, but it sure would be nice to see that feature internalized.
When you install windows XP on a SCSI or SATA drive you need a floppy to give it a place to look for the drivers for your HD. In fact, you can't place the drivers anywhere else as windows will automatically check your floppy drive (and only your floppy drive) for them!
Here's what I'd really like to see out of iTunes. How about an internet radio client. It would be a small program you install... you could tune in to several different stations (maybe some indie stuff too, to give individuals who let itunes sell their music some play). On the face of this program would be a 'buy this song now' button. Ever hear something you like but don't know who's singing it or forget later? Not a problem now. You can purchase it instantly.
Think about it, you could finally have individuals getting play and selling their music without the big record lables. iTunes is the one system that is already big enough to pull this off I think.
This is not meant to offend, I am really curious..
Obviously the iPod is very popular, but for the life of me I don't see what makes it different from other mp3 players. For those of you who shelled out the big cash for this thing, what makes it so special? Why sets the iPod apart aside from slick marketing?
It's the user interface. That's where it all begins. Mozilla and FireFox especially look and FEEL like real 'for profit' programs. Open Office and The Gimp do not... not entirely.
Let me elaborate. First off, I know that OOo and The Gimp are just as, if not more, useful, featureful, easy to use as the MS equivalents but it's about presentation. They have a very distinct 'Wal-Mart brand' feel to them.
Now, first things first, I understand that this is much easier for a browser to pull off than an office suite or drawing tools... There's simply much less UI to deal with. Still if the program doesn't make you FEEL like it is as smooth to run as MS's, it'll make the switch harder to make for joe-sixpack even when the extra features sure would make you think it's worth it.
I attended a lecture of Hawking's once at UCSB and let me tell you, he has an excellent sense of humor.
For a specific example he was talking about how he once gave a lecture in Paris about black holes, and after about 30 minutes realized that they didn't understand a thing he was talking about. It turned out that they thought he was talking about something obscene. He played off this for quite a while, ending with his dismissal of the black hole modled after string theory (fuzzball black holes) in which he claimed "A black hole has no hair... but this just confused the French even more"
it was quite something to watch one of the most brilliant minds in the world make jokes about the Simpsons and Star Trek while discussing Q-physics and whatnot.
Originally they predicted 3 months, extended to 8... now they're talking about over a year of operational time. Is anyone else concerned about the extreme miscalculations that must have taken place to result in such a poor estimation and re-estimation?
I realize this IS NASA, that these scientists are brilliant and that there are many factors that I do not know that come into play, but I also realize this is a group who smashed millions of dollars of equipment due to use of improper units. The end result is great, but we really should wonder whey the initial estimates were so bad.

Ever see GoogleX? It's a "fun way to access google services"
Just play with it's UI a little... tell me it's not the beginning of an OS

it is a pinch dated technology so don't expect to spend anywhere near the $1750 they quote on their web site. Referb models go closer to 500 bucks.

When was the last time a GOP took NY for the presidential election? When was the last time they were even within 20%?

What's funny is the old staple "My country" is itself a satire of "God Save The Queen."
