  1. Metal Gear on The Politics of the Video Game · · Score: 1

I always thought Metal Gear poured it on a little thick. The anti-military / conspiracy plotlines just seemed to go a little too far sometimes.

  3. Too many special machines... on State of the U.S. Arcade Industry 2004 · · Score: 1

I recently went to an arcade... I haven't been to any in a LONG time. Saw one in a mall and figured "what the hell, I have some time to kill" Every single machine there required you to climb into something, strap gloves on, pick up a bazooka/firehose/other huge gun, or stick your head into something. I don't want to pay 75 cents for 20 seconds of play just because I can jump on a giant plastic raft or pair of skis. I want to stand at a machine, grab the joystick (no jokes please) and punch some buttons.... no more than 6. I left the arcade after 5 minutes because I honestly wasn't interested in any of the games they had there. I'd have happily blown a few bucks if they had an old Killer Instinct machine. Of course, I didn't like the 3-d fighters when they came out either. I thought there was a little more gamesmanship involved in the 2d fighters. More countering and tricking your opponent, but maybe that was just me.

  6. Re:Had a problem with this at my company. on Linux Corporate Influence: Boon or Bane? · · Score: 1

Unfortunately this was a windows application ( actually a CORBA based windows application designed to interface with a QNX system ) It's not that we had a problem with the GPL. Far from it. We just wanted to make sure that we were playing by its rules since we were considering software under its protection. That is why we contacted GNU. Given the nature of the response we figured that it would be best to seek alternative solutions.

  7. Had a problem with this at my company. on Linux Corporate Influence: Boon or Bane? · · Score: 3, Interesting

My company needed to make use of GNU's Tar utility. We have a program that needed to pack and unpack tar files at will. To avoid packaging the software with tar.exe we wanted to see if we could integrate Tar into our software. The question was if we did this, would we just have to provide the altered tar code, or would it make the entire program open source. This is what I think they are talking about when they mention exploitation. I can see why this sort of activity would be frowned upon by the OSS community. A letter of inquiry to GNU received a rather interesting response. In a very long reply, we were told that they couldn't tell us whether or not we'd need to make everything open source or not since we were not the kind of people they were making software for. They could not spend their donars money letting us know if that was okay or not ( even though the reply took much longer than a simple 'yes it's okay' or 'no it's not' ) but if we were willing to pay them for their efforts they could provide an answer.

  8. Re:It's still progress on Building Longer-Lived Fuel-Cell Stacks · · Score: 5, Interesting

Not all fuel cells are nearly so fragile. I work for a company that produces military equipment. We researched fuel cell applications and in a demonstration actually put a bullet through one. They can be made to survive.

  9. It's not PR, but it's not for goodwill either. on Microsoft Files 15 Lawsuits Against Spammers · · Score: 4, Insightful

The idea that Microsoft is doing this just for PR is silly. The idea that Microsoft is doing this to make people happy is silly too. The fact of the matter is, MS, like any good company, is doing this for money. Spam costs them a LOT. The cost of spam is huge and it is rising. Email systems aren't free, and when 80 percent of what you have going is garbage, you could save a ton of cash if you could cut that out. I dislike MS as much as the next guy, but this is getting out of hand. Some of you think that MS doesn't do ANYTHING unless it is either evil or underhanded. Fact of the matter is they do what they do to make money. Sometimes that's good for us, sometimes it's bad.
