  1. Re:Ps on P2P Networks Blamed For Software Losses Doubling · · Score: 1

If I could not use my illegal copy of photoshop to composite the 3D visualizations of buildings I do for an architectual firm. Then I would not buy photoshop when I had the money to (I am only 18) and would instead be using GIMP. Basically, if Adobe did not allow me to pirate their software, they would be losing monery. [/arguement]

This is true mostly if you have very good headphones or are in a very quiet room. If you are in a room with other random noises, cars passing, people chattering, yourself typing, it probably matters less. Even so, you start to suffer the waterfall effect. You stop listening for the waterfall, but for the sound you want to hear.

Hey you know that whole ati 9800 vs nvidia 5900 thing with the cheating and such? Your comment is like saying "lets just buy the nvidia 5900 because despite the fact it's inferior, most people won't notice".

I am sorry, but no. You don't based what is better in a said subject by the people who don't know anything about that subject except for what people tell them.

  3. How the hell is this news? on Mesh Compression for 3D Graphics · · Score: 1

Any real 3D application (Max, Maya, XSI etc) have had poly reduction algorithms in place, have had them for years and are probably far more tested and refined than this. Games have been using stuff similiar to this for years, every single modern game has some kind of scalable meshes, pre-made or realtime. Even old ones do too and not just pre-made models with higher or lower polycounts, but models that are dynamically scaled in poly counts by the games engine, Sacrifice is one game that comes to mind. And wouldn't it be better to use premade meshes of different polycounts rather than have them be scaled in real time? It seems like it'd use less resources that way and it would give the artist more control to make a better looking model at lower polycounts.

I'll bet that there were children among the casualties when allied forces liberated France during 1944/1945. Guess we should have called off D-Day. Rather lose some rights than let any children get hurt. You can't be serious, you seriously think that is a valid analogy? One is: Have some civilian deaths in order to help stop the largest war, liberate millions and save millions of lives. While the other is: Make a direct move at stopping child abuse, simply for the sake of the children.

Don't be so naive. Alcohol only negatively affected the individual that used it. Although the wives and family members are also affected, the bearer of the biggest burden caused by alcohol is the user, they are also, ironically, the beneficiary. With child pornography the beneficiary bears absolutely none of the burden until they get caught. All the burden of it is put on someone completely unrelated to them, the children. The child also does not want to bear this burden. Do you see the difference?

  7. Hurray? on British Telecom Blocks Access to Child Porn Sites · · Score: 1

I believe child porn should be blocked. I am one of those guys that believe nothing should be censored. But I also live by the rule that you should be able to do whatever you want as long as it doesn't negatively affect someone. By visiting child porn sites you are creating a demand for it and coincidently harming children because of this demand. As long as they go site to site searching for it and block each site individually then it is a good thing. But if they put up some kind of filter, then no, that is bad.

I would just like to point out that 128kbps mp3's are unlistenable on my iRiver IHP-120 + MD33s's due to the annoyance of MP3 artifacts. However, OGG's are good to 96kbps. Itunes AAC is simply out of the question. Paying more for instant lossy encodes? I'm sorry, thats just moronic. and I'm not one of those guys that "just wants one song from an album" because I only give artists money when they have the ability to produce an entirely good album.

I have a friend like what you describe your kid's as. His parents are extremly strict, expect alot, guide him through life very well, keep him from making any mistakes and watch what he does all the time, making sure he does everything right. And you know what, he is an excellent student because of it, over a 4.0 GPA right now, part of multiple clubs and just very good at want he wants to do. He is going to go to an ivy league school and become a lawyer, get hired a very good firm and make alot of money.

Sounds great doesn't it? Well there is one problem with that, just in case you missed it I will point it out. "get hired"

Being guided through your whole life without the ability to make mistakes and fail will require you to continue to be guided through the rest of your life because you are too afraid to go off on your own and potentially make a mistake. I personally am not as good of a student as him, however I have absolutely no fear of failing and will take chances to get to were I need to. I have no doubt that I will one day be an owner of my own buisness and have many people who need to be 'guided' working for me.
