According to/. from last wednesday Gentoo is also boycotting XFree86 due to the licensing issues of 4.4
They have their own release of 4.3 listed as current:
mediaman root # emerge xfree -p
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating dependencies...done!
[ebuild U ] x11-base/xfree-4.3.0-r5 [4.3.0-r3]

First of all, let me say that what PJ did is nothing short of phenomenal and I congratulate him and everyone else involved in the making of these films.
I read the series for the first time when I was 8 years old and have read it too many times to count since then. I personally only have problems with two of the changes made in the movies (The not so subtle changes to Faramir's character and the scene where Frodo sides with Gollum and sends Sam back to the Shire). Any other changes were simply poetic license and did not detract from the story. Now, before you flame me, what did the two changes I mention add to the story? Both demonstrated character flaws that were not present in Tolkein's works and did nothing to add to the story.
Will these changes keep me from picking up the DVD when available? No. And I look forward to the extended version as well. (Yes, even though it goes against my "I hate Hollywood" nature, I am one of those people that buys both versions because I did enjoy them so much and would like to support them; as if they need it;).
Coincidently, I had just seen the site I linked to earlier in the day yesterday and found it interesting. Even the author realizes that he is nit-picking. I simply thought other Tolkein fans might like to see it as well.
The tin-foil hat brigade may want to bear in mind that Ashcroft, Tenet, Rumsfeld etc. may also take an interest in "Who's Who and Who's Doing What in Open Source";-)
I thought that was what the Linux Standards Base (I think that is right...LSB) is supposed to be doing. But then again, that seemed to have gone over like a lead balloon.
We wouldn't accept/gnome or/kde or/mozilla but/X11R6 is acceptable??
....and/opt/kde is OK along with/usr/lib/mozilla ?? Personally, I like KDE in it's own directory (not/usr/bin like RedHat/Fedora does) so that if I want to try the latest-greatest version I don't break my existing implementation. Same goes for X11R6. How bad would it suck to uninstall/reinstall everytime you wanted to try a beta/alpha/cvs version? Isn't it much more user friendly to just "mv X11R6 X11R6.old" and install the new to try it out? If it doesn't work, simply "mv X11R6.old X11R6" and you are fine again?
OK, you got me with the ewoks. I had totally forgotten about those damn things. On the other hand, the original Star Wars I remember as being something new and original at the time. Then again, I was 10 when it came out so maybe I was duped (even though I have seen them all many times since then...). I agree that by today's standards, the effects are pretty lame etc... Either way, there was an esoteric charm about the first 3 that was totally lacking with the newer films. Maybe it is because I am no longer 10. The new films simply struck me as being really light on plot and really heavy into effects (not always bad, I had just expected more out of Lucas). Maybe the problem was that I had put Lucas on some sort of pedestal so that he could *never* be good enough.
You do realize that some alcohol-related traffic crashes involve more than one person, but only one drunk driver, right?
Look, I am not here to get into a pissing contest about statistics. Who was it that said "There are lies, damn lies, and statistics"? I am sure if I had the desire to google enough, I could find the right statistics however that was not my point at all and I even stated that. My point was that I do think he is guilty of something. I don't think that it is terrorism. This is a public forum where people discuss opinions.
What bothers me are the posts in this thread proclaiming with 100% certainty that this is not terrorism.
I don't remember making any such claim. On that note, I was under the impression that until someone is proven guilty, they are innocent; in America anyway. Now (the article was fairly short on factual information), if you have some proof or a reason to suppose that this guy is a terrorist, please I would like to know. Otherwise, please flame somewhere else.
messing with 911 service is something we should (and obviously do) punish severely
and for very good reason. As I posted somewhere else around here, this guy is guilty of sheer stupidity for using that number.
Going faster than the posted limit when conditions allow (no cars on the road, good conditions, good car) seems far less dangerous to me than DDoS'ing the local emergency 911 response center.
I agree, but try telling that to a cop or a judge. Regardless, speed limits are laws made to protect the public safety. If you are dead set against that particular example, use drunk driving instead. That would still mean that something like 30% of the US population is a terrorist.
I agree with the original poster, this guys intent was not to disrupt 911. However, using that number instead of about any other shows sheer stupidity on his part.
Prosecutors charge that the act meets the definition of cyberterrorism since it endangered public safety.
By that definition, most Americans are terrorists. If you have broken the speed limit you have obviously endangered public safety therefore you are a terrorist.
Yes, at least the original three weren't drivel written for little kids. There was a story there. The latest SW movies have been about nothing other than making George some bank.
Granted M$ is a convicted monopolist, but karma whoring with a 5 year old article is ridiculous. Whoever it was that modded this Insightful needs to RTFL (Read The Fine Link). This is ancient history.
but several hours of my time is worth several Windows licenses.
Not to sound overly cynical, but I seriously doubt your time to be worth $300/hr. But if you are a doctor or a lawyer (or whatever it is you do that makes you $300/hr), maybe Windows is the best solution for you.
I too agree. I suspect the biggest problem is data. Moving proprietary data to open systems is often times a serious bitch. (and this includes address books, macros, acces "programs" etc...).
Companies do not want the best, they want the cheapest. Linux (BSD) is the cheapest, so why not promote it as such.
In this particular case, Linux is not the cheapest solution. Up front. It will be in the long run. What I find most disturbing is Ballmer gloating at how locked in to the status quo Munich seems to have become. It is almost like he is giving Munich the finger while yelling "I told you we had you!".

Would you write software for free for a living?
;)
No, but I would write free software for a living
First of all, let me say that what PJ did is nothing short of phenomenal and I congratulate him and everyone else involved in the making of these films.

Damn, posted on the same minute as the previous poster and still modded redundant. How is that for a commentary on /.?
OK, I have been at /. too long. At first, I thought the reference to PJ was PJ at groklaw.net =)
not everyone did... Check out this list of deviations.
The tin-foil hat brigade may want to bear in mind that Ashcroft, Tenet, Rumsfeld etc. may also take an interest in "Who's Who and Who's Doing What in Open Source" ;-)
I am not worried about them. What about SCO????

According to Xouvert's home page a release is scheduled for April 1, 2004. Of course that could be some kind of april fool's joke....

Yes, he's stupid for using 911, but is it only stupidity?
Absolutely not. He is a criminal, I am just not sure he is a terrorist (with the stigma that the word terrorist carries in this post 9/11 world).
Nor do I care much for your wildly imaginative and wholly unsupported clim that "something like 30% of the US population" are drunk drivers.
Approximately three out of every ten adults will be involved in an alcohol-related traffic crash at some time in their lives. (NHTSA, 1999)
That whole line of discussion is irrelevant anyway, IMHO.
Agreed. The point I was trying to make is that while definitely guilty of something, I am not sure that terrorism is the crime.

but this relied entirely upon the studity of the user to not only run it, but manually propogate it to other people
They were using WebTV.....
Seems if i try to view an image all i get is some damned pop-up ad..
;)
I must have got lucky, they were slashdotted when I got there!

although only if you don't know the Chewbacca is Luke's true biological mother
Chebacca and Darth Vader... Nasty.
Talking (replying) to myself... ;)
The judgement that is linked to was overthrown (yes, it was Thomas Penfield Jackson's ruling that was appealed). Look at this poster's history.
