Open source isn't competing anyway. People will use it, or they won't. It doesn't harm the movement.
Stallman just wants everyone to do things his way. That's his beef, and it makes him look increasingly hypocritical to talk about freedom while promulgating methods of subjugating all computer users to his way of doing things. That's why he only matters in his little circle of fanboys. Most of us aren't interested in his ideals. We just care about using a computer.
Yep, I'm a terrible psychic, then in your fourth paragraph you admit to being a law breaker. Congratulations on your failed attempt to rationalize shitty behavior by explaining how you're entitled to free entertainment. Your 'right' to be entertained shall not be infringed!
Fight the good fight, brother. When you win, and you teach creators the lesson that there is no reward to create and distribute content, you may find the victory hollow. I suspect you have some sort of rationalization to back that up, as well. Just remember, when you start using excuses to justify behavior, (I would watch it without commercials anyway, so there is no difference) you're generally not very 'morally correct.'
You could be a little more disingenuous, I guess, and talk about how the new Macbook isn't viable as a web server for Slashdot.
No one buys a Mac for the gaming. Particularly not the lowest of the low end. If they did, the lack of games would probably be a bigger hurdle than the hardware in any case.
Yeah? My Mini running a fully updated OS X 10.4.6 completely freezes without providing any useful information on a regular basis (currently about every other day.) It has nothing but stock hardware. See how great anecdotes are?
You answered the question you wanted to hear, not the one I asked. It's a neat dance you did, but you should save it for someone that won't call you on it.
I just don't see why there needs to be so much animosity towards Tanenbaum. In a way, it reminds me of when my younger sisters would argue over whether N'Sync was better than the Backstreet Boys.
It's almost like you actually believe that. It's so cute, the rhetorical horseshit the 'entertainment wants to be free' crowd will go through to justify their piracy. Just admit your an infringer, admit you know you're acting illegally, and get on with it. Stop pretending free video games are some sort of protest.
I say 600 is too much, and I say this as the owner of a gaming laptop that was ridiculously expensive. My reasoning? I can do a shitload of stuff on this laptop, including my day job. I've made over 10 times the cost of the laptop back. The PS3, on the other hand, is a sunk cost. I will never make that money back. Why pay so much for a toy?
if there's no reason for the PS3 to cost $600 then why is Microsoft charging $400 for it's system?
I'm flabbergasted. Speechless. No words. This is a paragon of logic. A monument to 10,000 years of rational thinking. The pinnacle of man's achievement.
Bashing Windows is not a defense, friend. I know it feels righteous and it makes you proud to be so very technically correct, but it's a false economy. You've won nothing.
You have to work within the framework of reality, which you seem to be ignoring. Here's the situation: the people being targeted aren't installing new hardware. They don't deal with the Windows intallation process. To get them to switch over to Linux, you have to make it as simple as possible. Not being able to use the display correctly out of the box does not fall under 'as simple as possible.' Bitching about the Windows install not handling a RAID correctly doesn't address that issue at all.
Consider this: you wake up one day, you're 38 years old, and your shrew of a wife has chopped off your penis and thrown it out of her moving car window. Does that sound like fun? I don't think so.
It's not really a reply to you, but then again, your post wasn't really a reply to mine either.
You're missing my point and getting caught up in the details - the only similarities I see are in the coverups. That sick little game is common to Bush, Nixon, Reagan, JFK, and yes, everyone's favorite Bush comparison, Clinton. I don't care what was being covered up.
So can you answer my original question, or will you be too busy kneejerk defending someone who isn't being attacked? What are the Watergate/Bush parallels?

Oh, bass. I figured he meant Christian rockers.
I wish it were something so simple. Apparently it's the bluetooth module, which sucks because I use a bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
By the way, you don't need the bang at the end of the command. That's only to force a quit when you have changes you want to abandon.
Honestly, the attitude is just freakin insufferable. You aren't saving the world, you know. You're just saving it money.

I have a stupid question - what do you get out of this? I can't imagine it actually entertains you, but then again, I'm not a retard.
Just as an intellectual exercise for you: as a percentage, how much of the current Linux kernel would you say was written by Linus?
It's almost like you actually believe that. It's so cute, the rhetorical horseshit the 'entertainment wants to be free' crowd will go through to justify their piracy. Backups are ethically beautiful. What are the chances that people will use this to backup games they own?

So what you're saying is that if a person you don't like owns the same thing you own, your enjoyment of that thing is diminished?
I don't say this too often: you're a douchebag.
if there's no reason for the PS3 to cost $600 then why is Microsoft charging $400 for it's system?

You have a unique way of forming English sentences. Am I correct in assuming you are not a native speaker?
Serious game console, indeed.
I guess you've hit the nail - all we have to do is change all the people and Linux adoption will take off. That's a much easier problem to fix.

Why am I a materialist?

Your particular political axe intrigues me. What don't like about the embargo?
You should put some of the blame on the human brain - it's easier to think imperatively than functionally.
Stop using Firefox. It apparently doesn't like you.
RoR has been out of the Slashdot spotlight for a while. I guess we're about due for another round of mouth-foaming Rails zealotry.
hmmph. typical slashdot.
