People who don't realize HOW valuable SSN's are. I was working as a DB consultant at one point, a company wanted to move a lot of their data into a system for their salespeople. I asked for a sample set of their data... they sent me their entire database, a listing of everyone who's public net worth was over a certain amount (IIRC, $750,000) with a residence in the state. The information they sent me had all of the information needed to become them... Name, DoB, SSN, Spouse Name, DoB, SSN, Address, etc. They e-mailed it over in a zip file. No password protection, no encryption, just a huge amount of ungodly valuable data. My boss at the time had no idea why my jaw just dropped and hit the floor when I saw it, and didn't understand why I was asking for a copy of the NDA we signed (there was no NDA). And this was just three years ago...

I mean, probably 80%+ of people in my state (where SSN on the Drivers License is optional) still keep it on there. People really don't understand what can be done... and the worst are the people who say things like, "Oh, no one wants my identity, besides... what could they do with it?"

Really... $40-60 for a game may not be cheap... But... you can wait a month or two, and see the price become $15-30 for the same game... Does that qualify as cheap yet?

    Now onto the real fun...

    1) Development cost will be a lot more
I can live with Microsoft and Oracle making fewer billions. No problem.

Doesn't work that way... it means you'll be spending more for the software... It is impossible to tax or charge a business something... they'll pass the charge along as it becomes part of the cost of the product...

    2) Development time will be a lot more
Well, Duke Nukem Forever and LongVista should be completely bug-free then.

Got it backwards there... with longer Development times, we'd still be working on W2K and *shudder* WinMe... Longer development time != less bugs; coding for less bugs causes longer development time...

    3) Hardware will be restricted. You are not going to be running this on any random hardware
I don't buy it. So long as everything is standard and functioning properly I can use any brand of gasoline or spark plugs in my car. A new video card shouldn't be a crap shoot, all of its specs should be published, it should be an OS issue; the web browser shouldn't care what brand of hard drive I'm using.

The published specs are not the same thing as what the system needs to talk to it... Knowing a video card can push 1600x1200 with 32 bit color does not tell a thing about coding for it... And yep, you can put any brand of spark plug in your car... but don't they have to be listed as explicitly compatable with your model car? I know for simple things like lights and windshield wipers they do... And the web browser will care about the brand of hard drive if it required a driver that was badly written...

    4) Other software will be limited. Only apps fully tested with your app can run on the same system
Again, I don't buy it. My software shouldn't depend on your software unless your software is the OS.

Unless your software isn't written properly, causing errors that spread out... and do you think the average user can tell what caused a crash? They see a BSOD or the machine reboots (AKA a STOP error), and they think Windows died... which is true... but what caused it? The crapware they installed? A badly written driver? Or a flaw in Windows?

    5) Slower performance.
Bullshit. Write cleaner, tighter code. My old XT had a 5 mz processor and it ran a spreadsheet just fine. I'm typing this on a machine with an 1800mz CPU, that's almost 400 times as fast. Blame everything except your own laziness and incompetence and greed, eh?

Your old XT also displayed that spreadsheet in monochrome, with noticeable delays when you did even moderately sized calculations... and had very little error checking going on... and a tiny OS... (Also... just as an aside, clock speed doesn't directly equal processor speed...) But you can get a huge performance boost, just load DOS on your faster bigger machine, and lose the GUI, the eye-candy, and the ease of use features...

Also... when people write an OS... there's an issue... they have to trust people like *you* the user to not fsck it up... Taking your "MS should pay for any detected bugs" approach... does that mean MS (and all the users of the internet effected) can charge you for deciding that you really did get an anonymous love letter, and needed to read it? Or that you really needed to see that porn from the website which had you click OK to a button in some foreign language?

If you really think that your car is more complex then any piece of retail software out there... I really doubt you've ever even looked at either a programming language or any source code... Your car has what, several hundred (maybe thousand) moving parts? Your average computer program has a lot more stuff going on then that... add to the fact, if you have a flaw in a cosmetic piece of a car, the car won't stop working... a computer program can...

One reason they stick mainly to the tragedies is because the comedies are "dirty"... We can't have High School children reading a play with sex and potty humor... Same thing gets done to Chaucer...

Personally... if you want "classics" that the kids may like to read, and will probably enjoy... I would lean towards Bradbury (short stories only... his novels are usually meh... IMHO), Chandler, Lewis (Don't tell me the Screwtape Letters isn't an interesting piece of literature), Dumas, and Hammett... If you're just looking for good books to get kids interested in reading... you've got Pratchett, Gaiman (children's books ONLY... unless you want to explain some very strange concepts...), Heinlein (Same as Gaiman), Card, Rowling, Lewis, L'Engle, and Asprin... (In no order other then what popped into my head...)

I know, after teaching my neice to read... and letting her have access to my library (with my supervision of what books were picked up... ten year olds should not be reading American Gods... unless they're your kids, in which case, let 'em at it...) she started trying to pilfer more books all the time... and started branching into books herself that looked good/interesting to her...

Getting kids to read is sort of like being a drug dealer... you just need to get them hooked... then once they've got the monkey on their back, just leave those classics you want them to read sitting around... eventually... they'll be out of books, and needing a fix... and they'll pick it up, and start reading it...

Free speech does not mean that I have an unlimited right to have everyone reproduce what I say, or transmit it, or publish it.
