  1. good for the economy of the US on A Fully Distributed Power Grid? · · Score: 2, Interesting

any reasonable person knows that if the US government backed a domestic energy program, two things would hapen. 1 - the oil and gas companies would gradually become involved out of a sense of survival needs. 2 - the public would be benefited by the compounded ROI of recycling the infinite petrodollarimport funds back into the local economy, not the rest of the world, each year. oh, there is another point! 3 - after a while, people would get better at managing hydrogen. i mean, somehow, most people can safely handle 10 - 20 gallons of high test gasoline in close proximity to their abodes. survival of the fittest.

over whose dead body will you say that? i mean, if windows was really easy to use, users would be able to figure out what their systems needed to STAY easy to use. lets take just one issue; ports. how many of them are there in a WINXP system anyway? how many users could even tell you that with a hint of accuracy? the list goes on... the trend has been for MicroSoft to push more complex products into the pipeline on the consuming public who is untrained to handle (in my view be even be aware of) the complexity of the systems they have to be responsible to manange. when was the last time you saw a complete manual ship with a WINXP box? or, when was the last time you saw a step by step here are the _insert how many zillion___ (qty) things you the user 'must' do when you get your computer setup and power it on the first time? A post here; [quote] Unless manufacturers start supporting Linux like the way they do windows, we arn't going anywhere. Other then that, porting traditionally Linux tools to Windows is a good idea. [quote] now, if i was a manufacturer, i would worry about my product being treated like a commodity....which is much more likely if it is a port to Linux/Unix than to the MS environment. those guys and girls are not stupid. they know that the Linux/Unix world seems to be one where FREE is the universal mantra... why suport that when your product requires real income by way of sales and profits to match the payroll and your costs of operation? i suspect that the FREE community will have to realize that somethings will always cost money because some company wants to make money. if you don't like that model, then sure... use the FREE approach and do the homework to integrate hardware and software yourself. if you respect the ability of a company to make money selling in this market which is tough, then pay up and buy a product with a more active support and integration approach done before you get the box and software. joe typical customer and ms joe typical customer will gravitate to the solution which fits their abilities and budgets. (btw => our firm uses both solutions for different reasons and that works for us)

i should give the kids in the neighborhood a prize for the first one to hack an OnStar system and connect a 12VDC powered home LAN wireless router to it. then, i wonder how long it takes one of his buds to set his up the same, using the OnStar system just to transmit, not to Onstar, but to each other when cruisin or ronin... you know, these kids live in their cars and what better to do that swap while driving. one of them plays his CD collection, broadcasts it thru the OnStar connected mini wireless router, and his friends catch it and burn it to their systems on the road. now that is sweet!

really, the whole thing with MP3s for free (not) and the RIAA suits (dumb) and the reality that any service needs to have a balance on the cost to revenue side is a great way to SHOW kids what a business is all about. my solution to offer things 'almost-free' is person to person... not peer to peer... i suggest kids just find a group of their buds and decide who will buy which CDs... each person buys a few, but no purchases are duplicated... each person is responsible for ripping the CDs they have and they share them in the group so everyone ends up with all the MP3 they want at a fractiono or share of the costs. when they have their own collections, they can share them privately with other groups who they TRUST. this cuts out the middle software-servers with the traceable and high cost litigation and bandwidth costs... kids learn to roll their own!
