  4. way to avoid being labeled a mutal fund by SEC? on Google.org, a For-Profit Charity · · Score: 2, Interesting

I wonder if this is a way to avoid being labeled a mutual fund by the SEC. They drew attention from the SEC for investing in projects outside their core business and ascting more like a mutual fund than a company.

  5. Don't forget firstgov.gov.. since 2000 on Google to Launch Government Search Site · · Score: 1

Firstgov has been serving this function for 6 years. http://firstgov.gov/

FirstGov.gov is an interagency initiative administered by the U.S. General Services Administration. It got its start when Internet entrepreneur Eric Brewer, whose early research was funded by the Department of Defense, offered to donate a powerful search engine to government. That gift helped accelerate the government's earlier work to create a government-wide portal.

In June 2000, the President announced the gift from the Federal Search Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by Brewer, and instructed that FirstGov.gov be launched in 90 days. FirstGov.gov went online on September 22, 2000. The GSA and 22 federal agencies funded the initiative in 2001 and 2002. Since 2002, FirstGov.gov has received an annual appropriation in President Bush's fiscal year budget.

Pirated? Maybe thats how amazon offers such low prices on DVDs! Doh! Seriously though, they are all commercial DVDs.

  7. HDMI seemed awesome but has problems on HDMI and What it Will Do for You · · Score: 3, Interesting

Between HD Tivo having numerous problems with its HDMI port and my new Samsung HD941 DVD player displaying "HDMI Audio not supported" on a great many DVDs I'm not sure if this stuff is 'ready' yet. On both of these devices I still had to resort to using a TOSlink cable for audio instead of using the HDMI audio.

I've always hated offices where the only arrangement for your computer was to have your back to your cube door so people can sneak up on you, intentional or not. Its hard for me to be producive in that sort of situation.

Using mfs_ftp on my tivo I had noticed that Tivo is tracking where commercials start and end, but they don't do anything with it, at least, they don't let the user make use of it. Perhaps they use it to track what commercials are skipped for marketing? Who knows.

Here is an example of the data I extracted:

  10. Here is what I did (pictures) on Building A (Serious) Home Network From Scratch · · Score: 1
I had my 30 year old house wired for 3 cat5e and 2 coax to every room. Except the main TV watching room where I had 3 coax run to handle the two tuner DirecTiVo and additional antenna.

The only place we ended up with any holes was in the basement ceiling. A lot of the wiring to the 2nd floor was done through the attic since our house did not have fireblocking. Made running the cable a lot easier. Anyway, here are the pictures
