    Spammers and virus writers together have already designed a distributed architecture in which they can send emails from hundreds of thousands, possibly millions of 'owned' personal computers.

    I won't beleive it until I see the RFC.

    OK, you have a module plugged into your USB port providing temperature to the computer. Oops, the computer has crashed - now who takes care of the problem?

    I don't think we are talking about letting Microsoft Windows handle this :)

    This scenario is more likely though:

    OK, you plugged an USB cable in, the computer crashed, who is now going to cook?

    Linux is the way to go for crazy projects, just don't forget to pay SCO the $699 fee or you'll be in trouble.

    Nope, but having Al Gore block all foreign hosts would prove quite effective. Especially if all countries did the same, and additionally issued spam laws.

    Of course, this would only hurry WW3 up.

    Not many pieces of code will be able to boast that lifespan.

    The most secure piece of code, even on Microsoft(r) Windows(tm) platforms.

    I've also got a question; What is the default/general password encryption scheme used in most GNU/Linux distributions? DES? Is DES an algorithm or a collection or interface or something... I don't know anything :(

    I did write a program that worked exactly as crypt did though, it included certain unspoken functions from -lcrypt, especially one named crypt.

    Actually, my 2GHz computer(running M$ Widows eXtreme Programming, a popular and good operating system) can hardly emulate the N64 properly...

    Of course, if the server was running over a GBA link cable, that's another story.

    It seems as if Marcelo Tosatti, new kernel maintainer, will say some interesting things, not really Linus things though, more like Bush things ;)

    Having that mentioned, I pretend to: - Fix pending problems which might required more intrusive modifications during 2.4.24. New drivers will be accept during this period (for example, Cyclades PC300 driver, input userlevel driver support, or other sane driver which might come up). - From 2.4.25 on, fix only critical/security problems.

    I for one wouldnt like my kernel to constantly have new and untested features when its supposed to be production capable!

    You know... in the kernel configuration, you can choose yourself what features you want. Simply disable(do not enable) the new scary features and you're done.

    I for one, welcome new EXPERIMENTAL/DANGEROUS features.

    The virtual /dev file system(EXPERIMENTAL) is *really* nice. There are some problems though, no /dev/mouse. I know the solution though, just create some kind of link to the real device and save it with dev*(whatever its name is). It will be restored at boot, easy as caek.

    Oh, and the /dev/mouse problem only affects some stuff, most applications will let you specify a device yourself or use the one XFree86 uses.

    Also, the framebuffer stuff rocks.

    There is a slight problem with that. Hard drives are not very portable. The main reason people use CDs is the portability.

    The penguin has a slight problem with CDs and HDs in general - you have to mount them manually(unless you use some desktop environment... bleh), Windows(r) really excels in that area.

    But really, has noone tried to beat Diablo II that way yet. I'm really surprised that noone has tried it, the game is soo old and the possibility of challenges rises every year. Just take look at console games.

    ... welcome a new kernel with UMSDOS support.

    I hate my computer(s). One of them is fragmented beyond hell(beneath?), pretty impossible to repartition, and the other one is running WinXP with NTFS, oh, and I haven't got the WinXP install discs as it was already installed on the computer, COMPAQ...

    I feel like buying a new harddisk... but I'd have to buy 2 then, one for stuff stolen from RIAA/MPAA and one for Linux...

    It's sad but still true, average Jennie won't download a 5-15MB browser when she gets it with her 'internet ready' computer,

    Average Jennie will not notice when her computer turns into a node in a soviet beowulf cluster used for generating new soon-to-be overused slashdot jokes either.

    Of course, what you don't notice, doesn't hurt you!11

    And isn't prison about rehabilitation? Will this guy rehabilitate by never in his life having a chance of getting out.

    Or is prison just about hot male on male action nowadays? I'd say so...

    I hope Arnold will create some kind of prison reform.

    Oh, and there's a word I didn't know in the article(and I won't even bother checking some book). What does 'scatological' mean?

    There are a lot of TODOs and HACKHACKs in all Quake-derived code, even the Quake 'SDK' probably has a couple of them left. It's some kind of design style I think. At least it's not a bad one as it highlights the areas that are not really finished(not that anyone will ever fix it though, they are more like - I want this, someone do it for me?).

    If you grep through the official Half-Life SDK you'll find at least 50 TODOs and HACKHACKs. (Much more than that probably, but I'm playing safe.)

    ... in Sweden we have two major gaming magazines, PC Gamer(sort of like PC Gamer) and Super Play(sort of like Edge).

    PC Gamer is just for PC games, they only care about the games that sell.

    Super Play is multiformat and gives high scores to games like Ico and Rez.

    Guess which one I like the most... err... I don't know, I subscribe to Super Play.

    I'm not that sure that the Source engine is in fact included, just about everything else is though...

    There are a few pieces missing in the leak... the Source engine is among them, AFAIK.

    Of course, the stuff that looks like the old Half-Life engine might in fact be the Source engine.

    They did say that they would start it from scratch though...

    Yeah, this leak will allow for the cheaters to make new and exciting stuff such as:

    * Wallhack
    * Aimbot

    Imagine a beowulf cluster of aimbotting wallhackers.

    The leak includes Havok 2, Miles Sound System, 3DSM plugins, etc...

    I think Valv^E will be pretty poor after this.

    Just for your information, there is a lot of Linux support in the code... I don't think there's enough though.

    I guess Valve are working on something, but it's certainly not finished yet.

    With this new rush of "help" I think that Linux support might be a reality in the future.
