Install any version of Windows, DOS (don't make the disk too big, DOS has limits), Linux, Solaris, BSD and others without worrying about rebooting, formatting or partitioning.
Be careful though, you may want to buy a bigger hard drive to keep all your fake HD images on once you get addicted to operating systems.
I run my server on my 1Mb home cable line, and it's Apache 2.x on Windows XP.
I'm a registered Linux user, but I don't use Linux because there isn't a damn thing out there that has managed to get DNS and Email into my understanding, whereas on XP there are many applications that are configured in under 10 minutes all from the GUI.
I would imagine that a lot of people are in the same boat due to leaving P2P apps on 24/7 and wanting to run a Webserver too.
Did you ever take the time to find out just how far along Linux development ESR entered the picture?
That Linus would not be as much of a hero without him, possibly, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt on an unknown, but drinking two buck chuck under a bridge he would not be, mainly because as the inventor of the OS that people chose for many other reasons than "being on the inventor's dick" would have taken him to any job he wanted. Look how fast people were lining up to get him out of Transmeta. His code did that for him, not his personality, and his ability to code was around long before ESR was in the picture.
One thing I've found is that (excluding games) there is a lot MORE software available for Linux than for Windows. It always puzzles me to see someone saying the opposite
I hate me for saying this, but...
Are you saying that the immense wealth of shareware/freeware that has been given away and forgotten about on coverdisks over the last 20 years, and all that drool at download.com total less than the available resources at Freshmeat and Sourceforge?
I would say that every tin pot programmer who knows how to write more than hello world has released postcardware at some point for Win16/32.
I dunno about your copy, but the ISO I downloaded had a/crack directory (sorry, this is a Windows program, FOLDER) on it.
To activate Norton Internet Security was easy too. I have a Keygen for XP (home, pro, media centre), and basically any other program you care to name.
Whenever I advocate a program that I use to someone, I will tell them that piracy is wrong, and that Keygens are for "try before you buy" purposes only.
Cracks and patches are available within a week. Its stupid to put paying customers through the mangler with "find the 25 digit code on the back of your CD case, then phone our toll free line with this 40 digit code, then stand on your head, turn around three times and pray you didn't typo" shit that is the industry standard attempt at curtailing piracy.
If the software I have on my machine was uncrackable, I would be using OSS alternatives, not going out and spending money on it.
To make life easy and save you the hassle of partitioning, have a look at VM ware virtual machines. You can run up a fake box while you play in Windows to test out the installation, configuration and use of your Linux system. I have VM's for different distros, and they run under both Linux and Windows if you get both packages.
You can download the ISO images from FTP for your distro and mount them as CD devices in your VM, saving CDs and making life convenient for yourself. Try running up a VM with Linux in it while your Windows system in the background is downloading another distro.
I really hate asking obvious questions, but all the instructions on Kernel Compiling that I have read advocate using make clean/mrproper before doing any work. Does that not clear up all previously compiled objects and require recompilation of the whole shebang?
If you were part of a group that 3 years ago went out every Friday naight and strangled some kids, and you went to the police and put your hands up, told them the names of the rest of your group and provided them with enough evidence to convict the majority of the group, you *would* receive a much lighter sentence, an identity change, and be part of the witness protection scheme.
The police are very helpful to people that do thier work for them.
Combine this with the CPU cycles needed to send SPAM messages under MSFTs new hashing system, link it to a popular site and all the email tax in the world ain't gonna stop the UBE.
Sorry to flame you because I have no sense of humour
=)
I would imagine that rather than reading stuff into the article, the grandparent skipped reading hte article entirely, as most posters round here do.
/. servers.
We do *try* not to

Then maybe they should stop wearing FBI style jackets and making raids on people? hmm?
Because hardware manufacturers developed it after pressure from MSFT to give them something to be better at than Linux.
One thing.
You need VMware Wrokstation.

You shoulda posted logged in. I would have modded you funny at least, maybe even informative.

I disregarded their recommendation, and have been running PHP on 2.x happily for a couple of years now.
The machine runs IRC, Email, FTP, PHP, MySQL, NAT and firewall. It never so much as hiccups, and on Windows too.

8 bits in a Byte - take a Big Byte

I won't allow that kind of behaviour on my system. My firewall/security package blocks that.

I feel a small bout of OT coming on...

Give them a TLD of yourdomain.cpu just so that you know you're surfing to a site that will use this technique.

I thought that under certain articles of the constitution you weren't allowed to incriminate yourself?
Maybe this could be a test case for personal webspace falling under that canopy?
Someone with mod points didn't like that, -1, Overrated. Haha.
If anything, its the Democrats trying to get Bush out of office a little sooner
Well good luck to them. That should make the peace on Earth thing last longer, if not the year.
I believe that the nut holding your keyboard is malfunctioning.
Coke couldn't say 'Pepsi, it's crap' because that's an assertion that can be challenged (in court if necessary)
If I ever get invited for jury duty, I'd go with Coke on that one.
The first time I saw it was during a Formula 1 race.
My wife and I support Williams/BMW and McLaren/Mercedes respectively, but when that commercial aired we were both hats off to Honda.
On the bright side, not all games can be given another axis to move around in (2-d fighters)
Bring back R-Type. I have a loader for the opriginal ROM, but to actually code it for noughties tech would rock.
