  1. The actual meaning of lossless ?? Any clues? on Audio Compression Primer · · Score: 1

    Page 3:
These are all mathematically lossless codecs. They theoretically should sound identical when using the same hardware and playback software. I don't believe I could conduct double blind or any other subjective test which would prove beyond any doubt that there are any differences between the options aurally.

-> When something is mathematically lossless, proving the encoding / decoding algorithmes is the only way to go. Double Blind, Subjective??? I'm really sorry I read the whole thing, I want a refund for my time!

  2. Anders leaving Borland - a blessing in disguise ? on How C# Was Made · · Score: 2, Interesting

Having used TP and DelpiI was kind of disappointed to see Anders join Microsoft a few years back. But now behold .... Delphi 8 adopts quite nicely to .net and is actually giving Borland a new lease on life and delivering where Kylix couldn't.

Having used both java and delphi I allways missed some sort of generics. I found Anders thoughts to be quite interesting. Question: is it possible to change the java generics-implementation in such a way that it would loose the limitations mentioned (and changing the JVM in the process offcourse)?

I couldn't agree more, I like free as in freedom as much as the next guy, and like to see this freedom extended all the way down do respecting other peoples copyright:

I allways wondered why slashdot allowed other peoples copyright to be so blatantly abused.
  4. Server sales counting as desktop sales? on OSDL Announces Desktop Initiative · · Score: 3, Interesting
    From the article:
According to market research firm IDC, paid shipments of Linux rose to 2.8 percent of desktop operating systems in 2002, up from 1.7 percent two years earlier. In 2004, it is expected to surpass the total new product shipments for the Mac OS.

For some reason this doesn't quite match my own subjective perceptions. I know a lot of Mac buyers, a lot of linux users, but not that many linux desktop OS buyers. Isn't the majority of Linux sales directed to the server market? Or they mixing the figures as they go along? Pity there is no link provided for the research.

Ofcourse you could by 4 seperate usb2/fw enclosures and 4 250MB drives for sell, but i guess it would look nice in a rack.
However ... does it have some kind of redundancy ? Otherwise the combined risk-factor could be on the high side for such an application.

Let's commence with our course, reading specs 101:
    1. find the datasheet
    2. press CTRL-F and search for AGP
    3. press CTRL-F and search for ATX

    Ad 3.
And please don't start debating wether extended ATX is ATX. ATX has very specific size and power contraints and this board fits neither.

  10. Re:C'T Review on VIA K8T800 Chipset Preview - Dual Opteron in Action · · Score: 1, Interesting

The Tyan is an incredible board, agreed. However, the lack of AGP, huge size and price render it more suitable for server usage, and we were talking mainstream (i.e. desktop) usage afterall.

If server boards is your thing C'T (again) has a nice review on pages 158 onward. Interesting enough they compare the Opteron to Intel's Xeon Range. At least some industry sources seem to think that Intel's 64-bit offering is not up to scratch yet.

  11. C'T Review on VIA K8T800 Chipset Preview - Dual Opteron in Action · · Score: 5, Informative

There is a nice review in the latest german C'T too (issue 18 - page 36) of the MSI K8T Master2FAR board with dual opteron support, Via K8T800/VT8237 chipset and a lot of nice features (AGP, SATA, GBit Ethernet). Size constaints meant only a single memory-bus is implemented, a 5-10% speed bump on memory access. Another downside is no PCI-X slots.

The nicest thing though is the price: 280 euros. Sounds like a good workstation board.

    - have your 10K Watts boom-car on the curve and change the tunes without having to actually sit inside!
    - hook it up to your car management system -> remote starters for the very, very nervous (just wait for the full drive by wire to hit the market -> Nikko, it my dust!)
    - get noted on slashdot: permanently use your gprs/g3 phone/mp3-player in the car with a small j2me/palm/symbian/ce http-server and have the community at large control your tunes (and maybe even upload some new songs)!

This exact drive was reviewed in the german c't (2003/14 - 188).

They too noted that the Gigarec was a bit silly (in the time it takes to burn one Gigarec CD you could put 7GB onto 10 regular CD's)
However, they had an interesting observations not noted in the above review: The drive can copy any protected audio CD (Cactus DS 100/200, Key2Audio, Copy-X, DocData) except one: MediaCloqa 1.0.
