That's a good point, but this site is really nothing more than advertisements for the featured companies.
Engineered environments of Alameda CA won the gold award for best dressed system. They also happen to sell premiere residential electronic systems. Their "distinguished clientele" won't pay top dollar for wiring up their estate in a way that's just "good enough." They build systems to be shown off. I'm guessing the same kinds of people who order these systems for their houses also have excessive sports cars and trophy wives. A stray ethernet cable is probably cause for a furious call to the installer.
But I totally agree with you. I do IT work at a university. Good enough will do just fine, thank you very much.
Times have changed. People are compromising mass numbers of systems and creating armies of zombie systems that they control via IRC botnets. They sell control of those systems to spammers for big money. The mac is simply not as profitable for them. It's supply and demand. There is a huge market for PC vulnerabilities.
There are mac rootkits out there. There are plenty of smart hackers studying the Mac operating system and finding vulnerabilities. It's just that there is little financial incentive to infect large numbers of mac systems, so it's not really a problem for the majority of users. This is not the case for the PC.
It's not about being able to surf myspace, it's about mutual respect. I know a lot of people that will take a pay cut to work for an awesome employer because at the end of the day you want to enjoy being where you spend your work day. Look at Google's success.
Similarly, if an employer has such heavy handed policies regarding internet use, I really don't want to apply for their positions. It has nothing to do with missing out on the latest slashdot story and it has everything to do with the culture of work over there. If they think that strapping me down in front of a spreadsheet for a non-stop workday is somehow making me more productive, then I'm willing to bet there are some really stupid and uncreative people making decisions over there.
At the end of the day, you are either a productive employee or you are not. It's not your browser history that determines this, it's your work record. Are your customers satisfied? Have you sold X number of widgets? If I can answer every email and phone call in a satisfactory manner, and meet all my project deadlines, why should a respectful employer care if I spend the next 30 minutes unwinding on a message board? Human beings are not machines.
In the US they have comics, in Europe we have graphic novels.
This is probably the most hilarously lame thing to be condescending about that I can think of. It is like saying "You're a virgin? Oh yeah, we'll I've never even SEEN a naked woman before"
This has been going on for YEARS. It's funny, because I was just thinking to myself how stale my account here is, so I log in and what do you know, people are still complaining about the same editorial bullshit.
This place has always been only useful as a means to waste time. I'm not sure it's ever had any relevance as an actual site for NEWS. Everything is so half assed here I'm surprised it's still around. At least they finally updated the design. Now it only feels two years out of date instead of 10.
let me get this straight..you're saying Bill Gates researches obscure state laws and finds that if he words his promotional offer in such a way that it is a loan, he will give residents of two states an opportunity to screw him. "Bingo! What a great public relations manuver!" says Bill, when he could just use the money for a straightforward PR stunt like W2K giveaways or something?
Do you think anyone is looking at microsoft in a positive light because of this "PR stunt"? Everyone I know is saying how stupid microsoft is and how insane our legal system is.

The reason why UFS died for Mac OS X was due largely to it's lack of support for resource forks.

"If urban games suck so loud, then why does "The Warriors" game rock so hard?"
Because the heros are white?

What top level domains are supposed to mean
changed when the internet became less an
educational/military resource and more a
corporate instrument.
Similarly, the term hacker lost any definition
that might have existed before computer crime
became a fashionable news story.
Things change. Deal with it.
