I am a Java developer, and I have used the LGPL on work (and also used work that HAS been LGPLed).

My intent in using the LGPL is pretty simple: If you want to use my library, go ahead. If you make CHANGES to my library, those have to be released back into the wild, so the library can be improved by everyone's improvements. I'm not a 'Free Software' zealot - I'm an open-source pragmatist.

If the LGPL does not meet this intent with Java, then we should find or write a license that has this intent. Perhaps one of the ones at Creative Commons would work...

Some people have pointed out that maybe someone just looking through a database on legitimate business sees an interesting patient file, and opens it up, just to look.

One reason this idea would be especially good for hospitals is because such actions have gotten hospitals sued in the past. Simply put, no hospital employee is supposed to view a patient's information unless required. So, if Nurse Betty is looking up "John F. Kennedan's" file, and also sneaks a peek at "John F. Kennedy's", she just broke federal law, and the hospital is going to want to know about that.

As for false positives in other instances, people seem to be just trolling. For example, every single day at a former employer of mine, a cell phone provider, we'd get false positives on customer who may or may not have been using fraudulent information to sign up for service. As such, we would stop and call the verification services we used, and verify that customer. So sure, out of thirty customers a day, it would generate five warnings, four of which were false. But one of them wasn't, and that makes all the difference.

    July 10, 2003

Construction on State Route 51 will close the freeway's northbound lanes between I-10 and Colter Street and all ramps to enter northbound SR 51 this weekend while crews install drainage pipes under the freeway, widen the bridge over McDowell Road and make repairs to the freeway pavement.

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) says northbound SR 51 will be closed between I-10 and Colter Street, just north of Camelback Road, from 1 a.m. Saturday (July 12) until 5 a.m. Monday (July 14).

All ramps from I-10 and Loop 202 to go north on SR 51 will be closed. The westbound I-10 entrance ramp at Washington Street and the northbound SR 51 entrance ramps at McDowell, Thomas and Indian School roads also will be closed all weekend.

Drivers will be detoured north on 16th Street and 24th Street while SR 51 is closed.

Southbound SR 51 will be narrowed to one lane between Colter Street and Highland Street from 1 a.m. Saturday (July 12) until 5 a.m. Monday (July 14).

The southbound SR 51 ramp to go west on I-10 and head toward the Deck Park Tunnel will be closed from 1 a.m. Saturday (July 12) until 5 a.m. Monday (July 14). Drivers will be detoured to eastbound I-10 and can use Washington Street to reach the downtown area.

McDowell Road will be closed on both sides of SR 51 from 8 p.m. Friday (July 11) until 5 a.m. Monday (July 14) while crews restripe McDowell and widen the SR 51 bridge over McDowell. All freeway entrance and exit ramps at McDowell Road also will be closed.

The construction work is part of the $75 million SR 51 project to add HOV lanes in each direction between I-10 and Shea Boulevard, higher sound walls, rubberized asphalt pavement and operational improvements to the freeway.

SR 51 construction information is available at www.SR51.com or by calling the project hotline at 602-248-3098. The project is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2004

Those high frequency sound generators may repel mice and rats, but only for a short period of time. What happens is that their offspring will come back to re-infest the area. The difference between the off-spring and the parents is that the kiddie rodents will be born deaf. Rodents like roaches are highly adaptive. A $12 million project to reconstruct the Interstate 10 interchange at Maricopa Road and widen sections of I-10 near Maricopa Road will begin this week.

I-10 will be narrowed to one lane in each direction at Maricopa Road on Tuesday night (July 8) from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. while crews install temporary concrete barriers to establish work zones for the bridge construction.

The construction project will build a new bridge to carry Maricopa Road over I-10 and reconfigure the freeway entrance and exit ramps at Maricopa Road to a diamond interchange, eliminating the current cloverleaf ramps.

Starting next week, crews will begin excavating dirt and building piers in the freeway median for the new Maricopa Road bridge over I-10.

The alignment of Maricopa Road will be altered as part of the new bridge and ramp construction. Maricopa Road will be built across I-10 at a 90 degree angle, meaning drivers will travel straight over I-10 instead of using the existing diagonal bridge crossing.

Maricopa Road will be realigned on the east side of I-10 to connect with Sun Dust Road and Nelson Drive within the Lone Butte Industrial Park. A new connection from Maricopa Road to Wild Horse Pass Boulevard on the west side of I-10 also will be built.

The project also will expand I-10 from two lanes to three lanes in each direction at Maricopa Road to better accommodate traffic entering and exiting the freeway. Crews will remove approximately two miles of the existing asphalt roadway and pave the freeway with concrete.

Pulice Construction, Inc., of Phoenix is scheduled to complete the project next spring (2004).

Granted, it's been a year or so since I played a first-person shooter, but if memory serves, the blood flying across the screen had an almost comical effect, with more blood than would possibly come from one living thing. Quake was always amusing, not serious. I know that they're going to blame the "violence that we expose our children to in video games" for these screwed up kids, but I don't buy it. If it wasn't video games, these kids would be into real guns in a much more serious way, or knives, or swords, or compound bows, or something. And, they'd probably be a helluva lot more dangerous, since they'd actually know how to wield these implements, rather than going through video game experiences. If parents would raise their kids, rather than letting the TV, the computer, the entertainment system do it, maybe we'd have less problems

The British author (amongst other things) Ben Elton wrote on the topic of violence in movies in his book 'Popcorn'. One of the main themes was about violence in movies spreading into real life, he pointed out many times that it's not that people emulate the characters they see directly, but that movies STYLIZE killing and violence - they make it seem COOL. Killing and violence is shown as a quick and effective way to get revenge, achieve goals, make a name for yourself etc..

Think of how they portayed killing in the basement scene in the first matrix, how 'COOL' was that; a computer hacker/nerd in sunnies and a trenchcoat, with a hot female in latex blasting away numerous innocent people without even flinching - with the propellerheads soundtrack pumping.

How many people play violent video games and imagine that the people they are shooting are real? Or use the simulated violence to release agression? What happens when life becomes too much and they SNAP and decide to do something about their situation - get revenge on all those motherfuckers in the coolest way you know, bust into school in trenchcoats with semi automatics and spray it with bullets - fantasy becomes reality.

I'm divided on the issue, as I don't think any sane person would snap like this and bring something patently evil into action, but what about the nutcases that do - have videogames and movies made killing SO cool that it appeals more than anything else? Should we start -constantly- portraying killing and violence as negative, highlighting the consequences and making these actions TABOO in our society, rather than revering them on Screen and in Play?
