  1. Good For All Forms of Medicine on HIV Vaccine Ready For Clinical Trials · · Score: 0

If this type of treatment is both A) Approved and B) Works, this is a giant leap in medicines. It would seem that this same type of approach can be taken into other areas such as cancers. The big problem it seems here is alot of research was needed before they were able to get the proper protiens and desired parts of the HIV virus.

For something like cancer where this data is probably already around, if this HIV vaccine proves effective, it might only be a small matter of time before we see giant leaps in curing cancer and other things.

The big problem is going to come when other companies try to develop ontop of this research and run into patent problems. Its going to really hurt us if people cant take this methodology for treatment and apply it to other areas of medicine because of a silly patent.

That wont solve the problem, actually we already run PHP4 and PHP5. The basic problem here is that support for PHP4 is ending. That means that at some point there wont be all the security updates for PHP4 that are still coming out for PHP5.

So running PHP4 and PHP5 at the same time still will be just as much of a security risk as running PHP4 by itself.

  3. Needed But Will Be Troublesome on PHP 4 End of Life Announcement · · Score: 5, Insightful

While I can completely understand the need for this to occur, I can see this causing alot of problems for many small businesses, personal webpages, and hosting companies. PHP5 is definitly worthwhile switching to from PHP4, but there are so many poorly coded sites out there that wont run properly under PHP5, and this at some point is going to cause a nightmare for various hosting companies.

Your typical small business or personal webpage will frequently use PHP, and have little knowledge of how to fix their code to get it working, or how to upgrade their 3rd party software to a PHP5 Compatible version. At the same time hosting companies who will reach a point where they need to upgrade to PHP5 in order to keep their systems as secure as possible (because PHP4 security fixs might not be coming out) will be faced with many angry customers who are unwilling to spend time or money to change a site that they see as working previously.

I can completely understand why a company might need to stop supporting an old version of their product at some point when newer ones are freely available, I just am not looking forward to all the headaches its going to cause. I can hear the phones of angry customers threatening to kill me because i "broke their site" now.

Oh well, hopefully all PHP5 code will wind up working just fine in PHP6 when it comes out.

Its probably more a strategic move than a mistake.

  5. Re:Improve how? on Linux Gets Completely Fair Scheduler · · Score: 3, Informative

Its been already said, but ill repeat just for completion.

Basically right now the scheduler is unbiased, giving ticks to all applications regardless of their need for processing time. An example of this would be in X windows when you have little taskbar icons that rarely do anything, vs having cd burning software running.

The scheduler will quickly learn that most of the time it asks the taskbar application if it needs to do anything, it doesnt, and that most of the time it asks the cd writing software to do anything, it neeeds cpu. So very quickly it will start checking on the cd writing process more frequently than the taskbar process. This will give you a very noticable performance increase in your system.

With this in mind, there should be a very noticable performance increase in all desktop and server systems. This scheduling change is a very big addition to the main branch of the kernel. Its been available for some time in various kernel patches but the fact that its making it to the main kernel branch means its matured enough for prime time and its been ackhowledged as benefitial to the linux kernel.

I for one am anxious to try this out on all our systems. From what Im reading it has some fine tuning options which should be really nice to play with.

  6. Linux Will Be Prominant, Just Not In Any 1 Year on 2008 - Year of Linux Desktop? · · Score: 1

Both Linux and Software commonly packaged with Linux will slowly continue to make headway, as it has always done. Linux (by linux im including software relating to linux) will continue to find its way into more homes and businesses slowly. There will continue to be great additions and optimizations to linux that competitors will blow off or try to mimick, both outcomes of course will help linux in one way or another.

Linux will not one day all of a sudden be 'THE' prominant OS, Desktop, or Server. Its something that will happen slowly. To say that it would happen quickly ( as in over a years time) would require something groundbreaking to occur for linux only (slight improvements in speed, usability, and stability are not groundbreaking), and something like that is very unlikely to happen.

I would love to see more global linux adoption, although at the same time there are inherant problems with this. A large scale change from PlatformA to Linux would cause many employment problems. Many people who have gone to school and based a career on another system would have to go back to square 1 and start training for a new carreer again. It would also cause an immediate demand for Linux systems administrators, techys, and many other jobs. This would probably lead to too many people deciding to goto school for this career, only to find out that after a few years the demand has gone way down and that now we have too many admins, techs, etc..

Im not trying to be negative, just realistic. This would be great if it would happen, but would require things to happen that probably wont, and definitly havent already. It would also cause many problems relating to jobs.

Your both right and wrong. You didnt pay any licensing fees or library fees for whatever part of linux you modified, you built off of what countless people have invested a large part of their lives into. The big thing these people wanted in return is for their baby (linux) to stay open and for people who use it to keep it that way , and if your going to make money off of their work, that your contributions go back into linux as well. Its pretty fair from my understanding, although your right in that its definitly not for everyone. Most people looking to invest alot of time and money into developing software would usually take the time to read the license of whatever source they are developing on top of. I can completed understand how this was frustrating to you and probably wound up costing unneeded time and money, but you should have been more professional. You dont resell someone elses product without making sure its ok first, thats kind of basic imo. This liscensing(spelling) scheme works very well for some people, and causes obsticles for others, but thats the intent.
