W2k is rather stable, not perfect, but I would never go back to dealing with w98 or nt4. So the stability had to come from somewhere...
maybe its bsd with a windows gui?
M$ will never truly catch up with unix, but they are trying, now if they could quit tripping over their own innovation.
dont underestimate the power of large groups of lusers...
I could be wrong, but from what I have been seeing for the last few years, the clueless morons are buying more and more computers. Not that they understand them, but they are getting them. I fear the lusers are still a minority compared to the total number of computer users.:(
Honestly, I don't think ms is really concerned with us. The target victim is the moron who really doens't understand any of this. They buy a computer with windows pre-installed and use whats there. They dont even realize they can dload something better. Now they decided to rip a cd, big step for them, and the windows format sounds better. To your average moron they think ms is wonderful because they make the music sound better than mp3. Although this isnt true, they don't realize this and to them its true.
Also all the buy it online music will start changing to this format, and for the moron it just confirms thier conviction ms format is better.
Try as we might its the moron that lets these things get out of hand. Due to lack of knowledge...or desire to get the knowledge, they accept what is handed to them regardless that it smells like crap. They just don't care.
Well, I have had a chance to see the new windows "Whislter" (or whatever its named) the other day, well to say the least I wasn't impressed. It reminds me of the win95 to 98 upgrade...take 95 and add some new graphics, and they were done. It took a second edition of win98 to make it almost bearable. The new windows is a w2k makover, the start button pulls up the integrated ms web page. Although you can set it to work like normal, this looks to be the moron's version of windows, designed for the webtv owner.
As for integrated software, I have toyed with win ME. The media player is not that great, and why in the world would you use that when there is quite a few quality mp3 player/rippers out there. Musicmatch jukebox is my favorite right now, and it can rip cd's with the best of them.
As for replacing mp3, well that will not really happen on the local computer. Where it will happen is the paid for downloads that will soon become available. That is where real and ms will get thier hooks into the people. They won't be able to leagaly stop windows users from playing mp3's or stop programs from doing it properly either, but they can start replacing the leagally downloadable version.
To a small degree when applied to internet based systems. But I think we will still find major server types used in businesses for many long years to come. Although it sounds nice where everyone shares with everyone, in a business this ammounts to mass chaos. And concidering that companies would have a harder time backing up files from all over their network, where when it is in a centralized place it keeps the confustion down.
The internet can change rappidly and often, but most companies don't chang that often or that drasticly.
Well, they limited my uptsteam to 15k/s in Maryland, but the downstream is still good. But the fastest I've seen is 1.2M/s. On average I can get about 300k/s when doing multiple files. I have friends with dsl and they tend to get the same speeds when downloading but they have me on uploading. I'd be happy if I could spit out 50k/s.

you must live in a bad area, the local electronics boutique has about 25 ps2 games on the shelves. And if M$ waits too long to get the xbox out then the really good ps2 games will be out and the ps2 will be set in its market. Besides, sony makes more than the ps2, just like m$ makes something other than the xbox. So sony will not go away if the ps2 were to fail, which doesn't seem likely.
Well, one thing would be that the projected price of the Xbox is less than the projected price of a GeForce3
Yes, but what will the price of the GeForce3 be when the xbox actually does hit the stores? I have a voodoo3, and it cost me $85, and it does a good job for me. Its not top of the line, but in 6 month I can get the top of the line card today for 1/2 the price or less. And by the time the xbox does come out there will be video cards that will put it to shame. You can change the card in your computer..not the xbox.

I have to disagree here...ps2 and the nintendo cube would be identical but the xbox and my home computer are more in terms of the same thing. My whole point on the issue is that ps2 is a game concole that is harder to emulate, and the xbox will not even require emulation. Some brilliant hacker will have a program out to run the xbox version of games on a pc in no time. If I wanted to buy a propriatary box I'd probably buy a dell, or a gateway. If I really wanted to throw away my money I'd get a compaq or an hp computer. (I love hp hardware, but not thier computers) The xbox is just a small computer in a small plastic box that runs a version of windows. I have that, but mine also can run linux, or bsd, or os/2 (not that I would want to) or any other os that runs on a intel architecture.

Yes, but nintendo has allot of the younger market with their younger kid oriented games. As long as they keep making those they will be fine. well, I've been holding off on getting a ps2 since I looked at the specs and realized it isn't actually finished yet. I figure around September it should be about ready. What I do like about it is that it also plays the ps1 games also. Unlike nintendo where you have to have each console on each level to play the games for that level..nes, snes, n64, cube...I can have one ps2 and play ps1 or ps2 games. Right now I haven't seen any good games for ps2, but its new and the good games haven't really been done on it yet. But if you concider that people who don't have a ps1 can have a ps2 and get the best of both worlds. Even though the ps2 has some flaws at least they have made some effort not to ignore their current customers by making a new box with no ability to play previous version games.
From a marketing standpoint this also makes sense since there are allot of good games out for the ps1, so having a ps2 isn't that bad since your not limited to just ps2 games. The cube won't have a giant collection of n64 games to fall back on when its out.
You know, It just makes me wonder why the xbox is drawing so much attention. From the pictures in the article...looks kind of like a compaq mini desktop system. What will this new game console provide that I don't already have on my pc that I'm using right now?
Every game that comes out for it will be ported right over to the pc and windows, no wait time since the xbox uses directx. Its like buying a box exclusivly for playing games. I just don't see any point to buying a console for games that is not upgradable and will be way overpriced. If you have a computer the xbox is reduntant since my computer can do what it can and more. Not only that I can upgrade my computer as needed.
I'll stick to playstation for a game console and my pc for the other games.
You must not be in the @home area. My upstream is limited to 15k/s...while this rarely is a problem since I don't run a ftp site on my box. On those occasions I want to send something big to a friend, then it bites. I'm hoping that when I move the new cable company won't have the same limitations on it.
I've found that most places limit the outgoing per connection. I can go to a site and get 30k/s...and the second file I'm getting can be gotten at the same time at 30k/s...so its not that they can't give it to you fast, they just don't.
Fastest speed I've gotten over cable was 1.2M/s and it took about 5 seconds to grab 5M file. Loved it. But I doubt I'll have fiber running to my house any time soon. sigh.

Since I have started working with interbase I've found it is a lot less complicated than oracle, MySQL, ms sql, or pgsql. Although not as powerfull as oracle, I'd put it up agains ms sql any day, and prefer it to mysql.
But it really does depend on the number of users and the load that is going to be on the server to really make a good decision. While a small company, up to about 50 users I'd probably go with interbase. But more than 50 I would want oracle and possibly middle ware servers.
Overall interbase has been very easy to get going.
Interbase has been open sourced and is multiplatform. So even if your boss is determined to use a NT/2000 server you can always move to Linux later and keep the exsisting database. MySQL lacked any stored procedure support the last time I was using it. Now that I've worked with oracle, ms sql, and interbase I don't think I would want to make a database application/site that didn't support a stored proc. I'm sure there are many ways around them but from a programming aspect I find stored procs have their uses to make the overall programming easier to maintain and understand.
Also if (which I doubt you would get any from M$ for free) free support isn't a concern then the downloadable version of interbase works quite well. I'm currently redesigning a project from paradox to interbase. Access like paradox is a non intellegent database which requires all work to be done on the client side. The SQL server has intellegence on the server side. The other aspect of a SQL server is that the users don't have to have any access to the directory where the database actually is. I have had users accidentally delete tables before since they have to have read/write access to the tables.
Depending upon your project MySQL could be just fine, it can be run on NT also. I think if you look at the requirements of what your company needs, and which database would better fill those needs, that would make a better argument for the M$ for everything mentallity. Business oriented people will be more impressed by the business side of the argument than the technical aspect.
Actually, if they already have the programming to sync with outlook all they have to do is change the jornada program to accept this information.
