When it have been? And seriously, with person who only could provide an answer to the question "WHY?" being dead, does all those blame games and discussions will even matter anymore?
Ohh, yes, we will analyze this tragedy to the death. Whys, Whos, Wheres. Yes, maybe campus security will get better (you can see that I'm optimistic, can't you), but in overall...
We can't get answer, at least not in geek way. We must understand human soul and it's dark side. And we must understand that we must act with responsibility to prevent such tragedy.
I see lot of steam already boiling up between pro and anti gun camps. But they both can be right and wrong. Pro camp can't dismiss fact that relaxed checkings for gun bearers gives very easy access to stuff for any kind of person, including simply evil ones and unstable minds - like this one sad fuck who wanted commit suicide because of girlfriend but taking some 32 innocent young souls with him. But anti gun camp also must admit that if some smart student would have gun, this soul gone craze would have been stopped after first ten victims.
But nothing of this will matter anymore. 33 young people - our future - are gone. There's nothing that can replace emptiness in the souls of their relatives and friends. Let's pray for them - even if you are not believe in God.
Damn, it is so "cool" see such insightful post on Slashdot. What we lack in virtual internet world - even here - is descent criticism of Capitalism just because if you are against it, you are probably hippy/anarchy lover/communist/peace of croak. Which actually shows that people are not ready to discuss many things, if they are connected with even small slice of disappointment or embarrassment (such that Communism was used as ideology to create and rule Soviet Union).
About proportionality you are talking about - well, problem is that people are people. Capitalism more or less is off-spring of Feodalism, so it simply slips back now. In my really humble opinion, people, left unchecked, will fuck up any system meant for common good. Why? Because of survival instincts. Like it or not, more money, more power is more chance for survival to most of the people. So they thrive for it. Why most people who are happy in marriage/with another significant one mostly don't care about these two things too much? Because they see their - or more concretely, survival of their species - in their family, children, etc. Yes, they need money too, but usually they have enough.
IMHO, behind all those greedy, power hungry bastards, system gamers you could see people which just have been very unlucky in their conquest of founding of their future and "survival" - happy family and children.
One big speculation, but those are my thoughts.
p.s. My biggest problem with modern world is that we keep telling "alternative truth" about it. We just close our eyes and keep saying what we want to hear. Not truth. We don't like admit that we are a little bit...savages.
I should wonder about which country you talk about because all Eastern Europe (Poland, Baltic States, Western Russia) are in iPod craze without any chance to get out - and I am not talking about iPod Shuffle - it is nano, 40GB, 20GB models, iPod Photo, etc. Sure, other players are roaming land too (simple portative players craze) and not everyone has Powerbook or iMac, but it is also a fact that users avoids Vista - first impressions maybe are nice, but in nutshell super duper visual effects about 1700$ is not what people actually want.
What is most important, however, that lot of IT specialists buy Macs because of it's easy of use + UNIX envorement. And IT specialists impact lot of different people in buy suggestions.
I remember why Loki Games went down - NOT because they went under 'cause of bad sales. They just got bad/criminal CEO, who done anything possible to bancrupt Loki Games without any remorse. And he succeeded.
Afaik, Loki Games was very successful creating needed infrastructure - and they knowledge in doing so was industry high. See SDL, see their installer, see OpenAL which they actively pushed and which now has some support in industry.
It was sad that Loki had to go away just because of some greedy jerk.
Errrr....maybe it is just because shareholders who holds majority share of company are several people who are known with their "I want to rule the world" attitude not with caring about customers want?
Surprise, _yes_, Microsoft lobbies IT managers and even managers from higher levels. And they have done it some much that managers already have used to it and assumes it as "natural" right to have "gifts" from Microsoft. Not to blame only Microsoft entirely, it is common "marketing style" of lot of companies who produces so-so products.
It is corruption? yes. Corruption is still corruption, whatever government or shareholder's company is involved. However, you will have hard time to convince those managers not to accept these presents. Because overall atmosphere and dignity in such jobs are long gone. Only if you inform heavily shareholders you maybe will do something.
Damn, I drop my mods for this article, but I wanted to say that I am also not a big expert in business and in US business especially, but what I have heard/read/listen/observed, is this:
Greed and fantastic growth is what all US stock market system holds on. It doesn't hold on something real, just vague promises and speculation. Ohh, yeah, it is all big speculation.
There, here you have unpleasant truth. For me it seems that only US could foster such absurd system which eventually will destroy itself - because rest of the world seems to be not so fanatic about shareholding stuff.
Simply they will host GPL 2 versions of software and will roll back changes from GPLv3 version. They can do that? Ohh, sure they can do, they can look at the code and code it in (not copying it) in GPL 2 version. Of course, it will cost them more a little bit, but more or less I don't see it as a problem.
RMS, Perens, I think it is all bullshit that you can stop deals like Novell vs. Microsoft _THIS_ way. Deal with it - as long as software patents will be threat, we will be in danger. Period.
And Perens, chill out, you are seeing too much evil in details, I think.
Damn, I must be lucky. Total beginner with my help launched the same wireless card in 1 hour digging in google on Ubuntu. In Feisty - newest Ubuntu release - it is even on by default.
From my Linux expierence (already 9 years) Debian and Ubuntu is most robust and serious about hardware support. Sure, enterprise versions of SUSE and RedHat are more kickin ass in this field, but Ubuntu shows significant improvements after each release in hardware detection.
So, try Ubuntu Feisty Herd5 LiveCD just in case (no install needed). If it doesn't work, then propably one binary daemon is needed.
Better than NeoOffice? Are you freakin kidding me? That stock of garbage which costs aproximetly *twice* as Office for Windows? Which is unstable as hell?
NeoOffice has it's quirks, for sure, as it is brand new software, but it is moving forward so fast that it will be favorite office app for most Mac users in one, two years time. I would even suggest Apple to finance NeoOffice development, because it could be quite important for their business.
You won't have to do a chemistry for all things, only for few you would want to be sure. If knowledge is shared, then creates something I call "knowledge poll", which collects all facts, everyone discuses it, new ideas arises, etc. etc. YOU WILL HAVE TO DO LESS, *In my opinion*.
Problem, of course, is with reality, that in business world, people running business are very hostile to each other and try to top each other with very ugly methods (stealing designs, copycatting, etc.). They are not trying to compete on fairy basis. Question is - why? Because human is greedy by default? Or they just don't believe in fair trade and competition?
One point - do you do R&D because you want to create product that sells OR you want to create exclusive product who is medicore but only "kid in down" because of patents?
Also, R&D is possible of patents is very strange argument. R&D will be ass cheap if knowledge will be sharable, you won't have to do your own, seperate research if you don't want to. There is also lack of evidence that existance of patents really helps to sell a product.
How do you think people earned for living BEFORE patents?
Huh....isn't that blindfolding what you are welcoming here? How do you think, if they can see this ad in YouTube or somewhere else, heck, let's be sure, let's ban everything we can?
It is not responsibility, it is decreasing time for educating your childrens what is fantasy, what is reality, you know, that kind of stuff you should learn your child. It is "phew, no more stupid questions about that stupid ad, let's go watch next CSI episode." type of attitude.
Ohhh, you have no time for educating your children because you have to feed them, etc want your own life? Then you fighting wrong and already lost fight. Growing children also brings responsibility to educate them, no more or less. They see sex - you should talk about them, of course in different levels in different ages. They see violence - they should understand why this is violence, why it is fake in movie, and WHY in real life such violence could get you (or someone else) killed.
Then maybe question lot of small, profitable things which are manifactured and sold every day and give people who produce them big money (IKEA anyone?)?
Because there are lot of chair makers, in your opinion, anyone who can create unique chair will go out of business ASAP when other will try to copy them? Why this doesn't happen every day?
Ask any small manifacturer from what they afraid of - they are not afraid of competitors, no. They afraid from a) too much taxes and b) too big goverment influence in private sector (including patents).
Patents from begining whas lawyers and big thinkers baby. People who really do things everyday simply doesn't care.
* There is a clear need for wider testing of open source software under
development in this area, including both desktop tools and video drivers.
and
* However, some of the relevant software necessary to implement this
proposal is not yet considered mature enough to deploy in the default
Ubuntu configuration.
And also Ubuntu plans to support Nouveau, which is great news (still, we have rather long way to usable driver, so don't hold your breath yet).
Also maybe I have to point out that Ubuntu drops official support for PowerPC platform, which is not so great, but not so bad either, because community have done much more effort to it than they. In result, everyone wins - Cannonical has more resources to get right PC version, which, I think, matters more now.
I still see it as fear mongering. Let me explain (warning: non-specialist opinion ahead).
Yes, Asian strain killed 60% of people it got to (well, we actually don't know HOW much people it got and how much didn't fall ill, but these are only details). But there is one thing which grab my attention. Current strain is definitely powerful. Yes, it can find some fitting way to mutate with some other flu virus, and then bum, it is easy transferable and that stuff. BUT what isn't said that this strain isn't very stable. And lot of specialists says that it won't get powerful with mutation - even more, it will get definitely less powerful that it is now. Yeah, maybe it is not important how much victims will die, 2 out of ten or 6 out of ten, but still, hey, it is important detail.
My opinion about avian flu is as the same about mad cow's problem - yes, it should be taken into account, everyone should take care about theirselves and their health, but please, let's stop this doomday stuff. I know, you want only good, but outright lying just to wake up apathic masses - no use.
And if someone picks at first avian flu panamedia - read Wikipedia or more correct articles about that. It was during war, there was no proper drugs for such viruses that day. Yes, we have our problems about that today - traveling, very big masses of people. But anyway...
No one will forced to buy anything trough Click'n'Run. It will just offer users who will want to use some commercial apps their way to do so.
What bother me more is prioritary codecs. If they are Fluendo ones, I am fine, but if they are some thirty party hacks, sorry, I don't think Ubuntu should get involved in this.
Anyway, interesting move. If it means that Canonical things more about commercial offerings, more power to them, because I would like to recommend some enterprise crowd to use Ubuntu instead of RHES/SLES, because I don't think very good about them.
What I don't want to see either is Add/Remove and Synaptic gone. It would be very foolish.
It is impossible, because majority of copyright owners of linux kernel code doesn't support such move. And believing that OpenSolaris will suddenly go very big with GPLv3 is wet dream at it best (sorry for offensive words, but it feels very right here).
Novell recently stroke a deal with , so I think this is total and utter FUD, spelled out by some Microsoft funded journalist, who also is in Reuters (which wouldn't surprise me at all).
So, Microsoft sees that Novell gets it's deal (20 000 workstations and 5000 servers, come on, if it is not serious, then what is), goes in panic mode and starts to create FUD. FSF could be overreacting on all stuff what happens around Novell and Microsoft deal, but there is no WAY they could stop Novell to distribute GPL code so easily - they don't have SUCH power. Only with release of GPLv3, it COULD be possible, and then only with very big shred of doubt.
So, it is FUD. It always have been. But for now, Microsoft uses it against us. So those who opposed this deal - take this into your little minds - Microsoft plays evil games and tries to destroy us by seperate us. Yes, Novell did wrong thing, but it doesn't matter when bigger things are at stake. What I would like to see is keep our tone down about Novell, and keep pushing our agendas about software patents and Microsoft monopoly abuse. THESE are things we should really talk about.
p.s. this post of mine is only mine speculation and opinion.
Personally I don't understand shyness/lack of will/underrating ourselves in these case. Look at Firefox, they made whole PR campange around those numbers! And if they won't matter....THEY DO. They are true numbers who can be verifired, checked, compared, etc.
I think most of problem of using meme "look at the numbers, user count are huge, man" is that there's lot of geeks which don't see this argument as simply valid (those numbers can't be wrong, etc. etc.). They would like to better convince hardware developers that they MUST get those damn specs (by some hidden morale or simple common sense, which, I agree, exists in this case too) out rather trying to wow them to community side (presentations, numbers, proof of concept (you don't have to care about driver, etc.)).
We need more actions like SpreadFirefox, period. Done right, they just work.
Believe me, you don't want a stastical lynked myriad of applications. They will be slow as hell.
And about.app bundles - please, run OS X for some several years and then come back and say something nice about it. I definetly won't. Yes, sometimes it is nice. But it is sometimes. In overall, it doesn't change a bit. Apt-get installs my apps on Ubuntu still faster.
When it have been? And seriously, with person who only could provide an answer to the question "WHY?" being dead, does all those blame games and discussions will even matter anymore?

It is not grotesque. It is disrespect and mockery to the dead ones and their relatives. Fuck such jerks, there is nothing saint in them.
Damn, it is too painful even to foresee this.
