Not only it is not a problem, it is OUTSIDE any scope of any software license, specially GPL, who allows you do ALMOST anything with software. I will underline it - _do_. If GPL was only about limiting distribution choices, why it does impact usage, like Tivo?
RTFA. AMD will power first and second series of OLPC machines. Intel will provide platforms (propably some low level P4/Xeon with resistant structure) for _servers_ which will serve those little boxes in class room and outside of it.
After that it is hard to say - I think AMD processors are more suitible for OLPC for now, but what will future bring - who knows.
[irony] Everyone hides, Samba adopts GPLv3! Fear it, it will take your birthright to screw with distribution of free software away! [/irony] Why such panic? GPLv3 was clearly vetted and tested trough several feedback sessions, which included I think majority of corporations who seriously deals with GPL software in their appliances, software solutions, etc. And their opinion where taken into account. Even Novell in the end can still distribute GPLv3, if they got everything right.
Have Slashdot really became party place for stupid people and Microsoft AstroTurfs? Or it is just new wave of angry Microsoft friendly admins who will stand in first line "against RMS and FSF lead software communism"?
(Pecisk ducks, waiting for Flamebat moderation. Hell with it, sometimes steam just comes out naturally)
It was. First it was simply a license that you are playing author's music which are represented by agency. Then, lot of cafes and shops started to play non-represented, unknown authors, invited local groups to play, etc. Seeing this, again, agencies got laws changed and now they represent virtually EVERYONE, even you. They don't care that you don't have a contract, who cares, when you will do, then you can collect your money.
And now they claim that ANY sounds, even public domain ones, are subject of payment. So, pay up.
Yes, we have seen this before. Yes, patent trolls. But these are much stronger and legal ones. If you say "this sucks", you have serious explanation to do, because it is "holy copyright". Most people simply see it as not worth the hassle and gives in.
Man, this is so harshly on target. Beatles played all old school rock'n'roll songs in Hamburg and for MONEY. My pick no one bothered to collect money from them then.
And word "abused" is totally wrong here. Every serious group claims that they got their talents in mastering of their instruments trough playing cover songs.
I think it is time for serious peaceful revolt against so called "copyright collectors".
I personally where very happy about when Fedora project came to light (contrary to the most of whining crowd) - in that time, I was already convinced that basic parts of OS should be done or driven by community (a la Debian or Ubuntu) and companies should be bothered just with making money AND therefore paying wages for our superior coders of kernel and other stuff. I don't use RedHat/Fedora/CentOS myself, but I can agree that they are very good community citizens, they honor licenses, they honor freedom of code and customers. They opened Netscape iPlanet directory server code, they improve it, they work with OLPC team, they provided free fonts as replacement for infamous msttfcorefonts package, etc.
It is a little sad that Novell, while having capacity to be also such champion of open source, didn't came even close, and just because of bunch of executives who agreed to sell their hearts to evil over. I think as community we understand a lot of things from this - that there are things which are so basic of us that can't be changed.
So, it is great that old knights of open source shows a solid standing together in this fight.
Is this the same "No wireless. Less space than Monad. Lame" argument all over again.
Other phones have already those things? Color me surprised. They usually are some patches in software which doesn't work right anyway. Most phones doesn't have pretty, fast, sensible UI, they are slow, crashing and unappealing at first. Mine Siemens S75 (from BenQ) fame is quite nice, it is business class, but even there are lot of crashy things, including Media player. If Apple gets stability right, then I guess they will have no problem to sell this phone to people like me.
Yes, Apple sells design and sexism here again. But IMHO they have never did otherwise. They won't sell a cell phone, heck, it won't be even a smart phone, it will be a iPhone - fully integrated solution which looks very sexy and cool, take it and use it. You can't deny that these are the same things which sold so many iPods.
Man, you got it all wrong.
Atrocities are atrocities, no matter how do you look at it, no matter which SIDE did it, or for what reasons, revenge or whatever. It doesn't change ANYTHING.
Questions WHY and WHAT TO DO should be asked to politics and police - they should decide what to do to end violence.
How picture makes something good or bad? It is just a supporting FACT. Not even main fact. But it tells story about what happened quite a bit.
Interesting POV, however, there is no historical record that Marie said that. Most of historians that it was anti-monarchy sentiment which created legend about these words.
Almost as the same with Bill Gate's "words" about 640 kilobytes, when he actually didn't say that. Funny how people assume everything so easily.
What I find more and more disturbing that history, which should learn facts, is more and more "corrected" just because some arrogant freaks can't accept the truth. Hololocaust did happen. As did happen crimes of Soviet Army and leadership. Western powers sold lot of countries to Soviets. In lot of these Eastern Europe countries jews where killed by locals (they were managed by Nazi, but still...).
I think biggest problem is that such attitude - I don't like it, therefore, it DIDN'T happen - is CHILDISH. Everyone knows it. But yet, there it is. Why? Why people are so afraid of truth?
I guess that such denial is allowed more and more because people live more stressful lives and in result, they tend to avoid unpleasant truths more and more. It is clear that in nineties there was less such absurd disscussions about history and sciences as it is now. It is clear, however, that leadership of countries use history more and more as propaganda tool just to "fix" thinking of nation in right way.
They want to avoid people who are actually thinking and analysing past. Because if they will do, they will start to think about what to elect, which laws are wrong or right, etc. etc.
to do that "Linux is tained and stuff" trick? Simple. Before that, Novell where very close to offer full stack of apps/technologies/stuff for migrating SMB to Linux. Groupware? check, Groupwise. Good looking and working distro? Check, Suse. Enterprise technologies? Check, starthing from Zen network, etc. Commited resources to fixing things in open source stack? Check, Novell employ/employed lot of Samba/KDE/GNOME/OpenOffice.org coders. Microsoft actually nailed two rabbits with one hit - they pushed their IP war against Linux a bit forward and stopped capable company from gaining any marketshare and momentum. What makes me so mad that I can even bet that it was just because of some coorporation tricking (I could guess even on corruption inside Novell). I think Microsoft simply pushed right buttons and leadership of Novell, without thinking or consulting devs or middle management first, decided easily.
Of course it is all speculation and don't change a bit - Novell have to clean up their higher management and drop those agreements with Microsoft to get it right back on track - but it is kinda little bit sad that stupid decisions are made just because some people are so easily manipulated trough money.
So Putin is "good" just because he is mighty savior of Sovi..err, sorry, Russian people from mighty capitalism (yeah, what about those hyper wealthy people which are favorites of President)? And just because sometimes Western journalists have similar problems (Let's be clear - any arrogant power doesn't love critics or people who try to investigate those who are in power), it is equal and there is nothing to blame Russia about?
I am getting tired "I am bad as you are, so no blame on me" shit everywhere, but especially in Russia. They can't handle their own country, but they are just trying to insult and blame anyone around it instead of getting it right in their own backyard. Yeah, I know, sounds like US to me too, but that only means that they are equally BAD.
Putin is dictator and seems like Russians really don't care or are too ignorant to do something about. Or got that "scare gene" from Soviet times back. Youth are totally brainwashed by "Great Russia" concept, even blindly falling into historical traps a la Soviet Union, Stalin, etc. I have lived these years in a hope that they won't fall into same river. Well, they are making history in proving otherwise.
You should update your historical resources, not only read Soviet propaganda (and use heavily edited Wikipedia articles from Soviet-and-glory-past-of-Russia-lovin editors who claims that everything else they don't agree with is nazi propoganda and should be banned as references - read Talk pages for your referenced pages). SS-Legion WASN'T voluntary at all, Nazi wanted to look it so, but all their documents - and oral histories from legionnaires - claims different picture. They didn't had choice - be in SS-Legion or be gone, literally. Also already in aftermath all legal institutions involved in judging SS-Legions claimed that they weren't voluntary and that they didn't act in any of shootings of Jews (you could avoid a spin about that and could point out that lot of Eastern Europeans shot Jews, including some several hundred very Nazi thinking people from Estonia, then I could agree with you in that. But you should also point out that it was all arranged and coordinated by Hilter guys themselves).
Soviet Union, as far as I have seen reading after all sources, didn't leave them much choice, because it is no hyperbole that occupation of Baltic States where called Year of Horrors - you should read more about that. What your nice "daddy" Stalin did to us, and in fact also lot of Russians, left with no choice for Estonians than fight in SS-Legions against Soviet army and trying to avoid second occupation. Two armed-to-teeth, nutty, murderious nations and you and your nation between them - guess what kind of choice it is.
In fact, that you utilize "red flag" syndrome using SS brand without quite understanding what it actually means leaves me little doubt that you just trying to push your agenda here.
And, in fact, Loki Software proved something totally different - that bad CEO can bring to halt almost every company, including Microsoft. Yes, it wasn't because of bad sales why Loki went down, but because of some jerk-thief in post of CEO who took all money for himself. Sadly, myths about Loki demise are spread again and again, even from Linux users who don't dare to check facts.
Also I completely agree with you - situation has changed anyway, Linux user marketshare has grown significantly. I think Loki would rule today with it's expertise in games' porting.
Nice movie, a little bit campy, but somehow with spirit. Made me do a little personal research on subject, as I'm little bit of history geek. Good acting from Butler.
!@#$@%#^, damn, that was FIRST thing in my mind when I saw his smile - so fake and artificial - and heard his promises and taglines. NO way such man would support something so social like free software or relaxed "intelectual property" terms.
Sight, another bought out politician. And it seems like people just don't care.:(
Read this my comment, I won't repeat it all again. And no, it will cost 100$ when it will be sold to the countries. It is estemated that now it costs 175$, but price will fall due of market/mass production.
It is not official RedHat statement, but hey, I feel about it the same way.
XO is open computer as much as you can get these days - everything is open, even spec for firmware of webcam. So why in any way forbird Microsoft to create OS for it?
Default will stay RedHat + Sugar anyway, and Windows in no way will have tickless kernel, etc. features what is needed to run this box properly, up to specs.
And did you read all the sources, before making ANY decisions?
It is SPECULATION from not-so-favor-for-OLPC journalist, what Pointe said that NOW laptops costs 175$ to produce, it is believed when mass production will begin, combined that will be already half a year from this point, price will be in 100$ zone.
Also, it was ALREADY known that Bill have been given several XO boxes to play with and try to get Windows on it. Again, NO specific technical decisions where made in favor of Windows - all hardware will come with open source drivers, even FIRMWARE.
Just for future, read all sources. Slashdot and Wired definitely aren't most trusted ones.
This is complete nonsence and incompetent law again introduced by clueless politicians who are doing NOTHING useful to countries and people they represent. How usual these days:(
Because I doubt that company can do such dump of price - even in educational market - while owning total monopoly in OS and Office markets. They will offer, sure, but it is much more like "placeholder" for Microsoft answer to OLPC and Edubuntu, and other educational open source projects.
