Hmmmm my pick is... When you kill someone while defending yourself, I guess your decision could be somehow understandable. But kill 'some several ten thousand people' for the sake of 'war psyhology' is similar to terrorist who has pointed gun at your child's head and ask you to surrender.
I simply can't follow your cold logic here. Because no human death can be justified in the way you do.
Why it is so big surprise for enterprises when companies stick with things which just work [tm]? For example, I'm linux advocat, but if company is very happy with it's Windows 2000 installation (and believe me, there are many shops with good windows admins), i would say - stick with that.
It is actually always have been a problem - IT industry wants customers to move on, but customers want the opposite - stick with things wich works and don't mess with that. Yeah, there always are improvements which can be made to get IT infrastructure work for you more efficiently, but there are usually small ones, not big architecture changes.
About the sound - yeah, sound source mixing is still a problem for Linux desktop and should be addressed accordingly. AFAIK there are many projects already underway for this, also there is ALSA dmix and lot of other various stuff.
So - some criticism is corect in this case, but people working on that, so I guess it will be here quite soon - and will rock, as many thought over solutions in Linux desktop world.

Yes, that simple thing which is overused for learning and coding pratices. In the times when you are have to look for good perl manual, PHP manual from the very begining was perfect. That's it. And second best thing came when they added those comments for user experience.
So, in any way, PHP is such thing which just works.
It DOES precludes Free Software, which by definition can't be tained by such requirements. And that is what's matters because reality is that most "free implementations" are BSD/GPL based.
Don't try to paint something white when you see that is almost impossible.
There should be no terrorism charges from goverment in the first place. If it is so, well, yeah, they can fight the court to prove their innosense, but WHY goverment does it, when it is NOT terrorism what everyone thinks about?
WHY this additional bullshiting? It is because citizens should be so clever and should stop their goverment from doing wrong?
Isn't that there should be somehow a very strong trust to goverment in first place in such things?
You hit the nail with this post - this is what I feel about world today. We would like to stop these things for happening - dying democracy, police state, more power to corporations - but we I doing so much to keep our lifes going, that we simply have no time and no inner power for this.
I don't want to sound ultra-anarchy lover, but all this system has reached it's limits. Capitalism won't work for most of people and I guess we are starting to see that.
No, because Intel will simply provide their commercial development tools - compilers, debugers, etc. - for Apple Intel-based computers. It won't be done by Apple, there is nowhere Xcode mentioned, so stay calm.:)
I wanted to agree with your experience - in studies metioned user training costs are something very overblown - GNOME and KDE is not THAT different from Windows, for christ sake, specially KDE. I have to find yet any "common computer user" who can't operate with both of these free desktops after spending some time with them (ten minutes - three hours). Of course, application aviability, exotic hardware support are another issues, but for common user it is no brainer.
For me this argument is so old, and I guess for press and Microsoft PR too - as they don't push this message anymore.
No, I don't agree with you. I guess myth is also: + everyone has DC++, eDonkey, BitTorrent, etc. installed on their computers (don't care that most people simply don't have time for searching for warez); For example, I have almost NONE (ok, BitTorrent for Linux distro CDs) of these programs. And I am serious computer geek for 11 years. + everyone will try to check out dark corners of Internet to find 'free stuff';
I think most people stick with working formulas to find music - record shops, Amazon, iTunes - because they got most advertising.
There are people who will stick with products which will they find in shops - they will NOT compare even prices and will try to get somewhere cheaper. Because they simply don't care about saving some few dollars.
And there are people who will always try to get things for free. For God's sake, let them install all this stuff and get some spam virus or something. They simply won't change and won't start pay regulary about music, movies, etc.
And that's it. There is simple answer to all that - of coarse, I don't protect copyright infrightement - BUT there is simple rule and it sounds like that - people who CAN and WANT to pay for your product (movie, music, media, game, etc.), they WILL. Those who can't, will stick with 'piracy'.
I don't want to sound like flamebat or troll or something, but honesly - do Americans really believe it anymore?
Do you really think you have been good guys all the time? Why there is terrorism in the first place? It is reaction to your "good" works not so long time ago. Americans better should start to see world NOT black'n'white but understand that every action has it's results.
There is NO white. There is NO black. There is full rainbow of colors. Learn to UNDERSTAND the world, instead of trying to create it by your own standards.
You are no gods, but you are no evils, either. You are humans, as the rest of the world. Humans can hate, love, and humans can forgive. And learn how to deal with world not buying it, not conquering it, but...
Microsoft primary market is U.S. and Europe. For other countries, it doesn't really matter. So I guess it could have impact of Microsoft chances of growh in certain region, but not in overall.
There is a problem not only in that - my guess that gaming industry have lost most of it's touch of fun and entertaiment. Mostly titles which comes out now is overserious, not-for-kids, titles with blood and gore - to attract male hard-core gamers. I know, i know, lot of people and will scream - we play RTS, TBS, various of other strategy, RPGs, etc. etc. Yeah, but anyway - computer/video game as a casual fun - and sorry, hard core gamers, most people ar just like that - have lost much of it's beatiful touch of innocence.
For example, still, Half-Life series rocks - and you know why? Because they don't take theirselves too seriously. And it is fun to play them:)
Of coarse, it is PR stunt. And I personally won't give a shit about it. It is GOOD to see that Nokia, the mighty gard of it's "intelectual property", trying to build something really USEFUL based on open source. And check out what kind of contributions they got it.
I hope it is some painful, but strong change in trend for Nokia. They won't change their attitude in one day, proposing software patents in EU, but let's cross fingers and hope for the best.
I wonder about it too - it is strange that such large company can't take their act together. Come on, Nokia, you DON'T gain nothing much of software patents IF you act in market in good faith.
But let's be honest here - is good to see the change in trend. World won't change in one day, and software patents are here to stay for some time. But for Europe let's hope they simply won't go in serious action. Let's do our best.
Many people have asked: "what is all fuzz about this desktop search?". Well, here you have answer. Storage will grow larger and faster. And it is a GOOD thing. In such large space, ordering records/files/movies/music/whatever will become too much for person. And there Spotlight, Google Desktop Search, Beagle, Microsoft "next best thing" comes in action. I have seen Spotlight in action and if fact, I'm impressed.
It is interesting how fast other botlenecks in computer systems will catch with storage - memory, cpu (oh, yeah, there comes Cell), io.
Of coarse, actual question is - do people need all this stuff? Maybe not all, but mostly it is good to have "unlimited" storage option.
I have thought about this many times and, well, it is not clearly only about money. As many posters already pointed out, it is not all neccessary those workers' fault. It is usually common that fellow workers pay about failures of the higher management, as it has more possibilities to blame someone else for their misfortunes.
Maybe. But I guess that users who need stuff "just work" won't agree with you at all. Browsers are not some kind of specific apps, but thingy which is used by common crowd everyday.
There should be a compromise. There is only 100% bulletproof, safe design - turn off the internet. Either way, there will be always problems.
Hmmmm my pick is...

I guess you maybe be right, but until people will understand that revenge never brings any kind of justice, only it expands circle of violence...
Violence will never end.

Yes, there are some, but I guess they are very minority, at least, according to my observations. So in fact they really don't make impact so big.

Well, can you eat ice scream before paying about it and said - well, it sucked, i won't pay?
You can't have it that way. If you do, then wait for your boss to say - I will watch how good you will work. If bad, you will get NOTHING.
You want to live in such world?
a whole new meaning :)

But if serious it is half funny, half serious. Let's see how Microsoft friendly [tm] press will spin it
When assume that download counter at spreadfirefox.com counts updates. Well, it doesn't.
Just as simply as that.
