I always thought of that... How can open source be more reliable without a project...
I guess the secret is not overspecifying (as it often happens with UML for instance) and building individual, working bricks that can be reused...
Besides, project and implementation often don't go together... I mean, how to deal with different interfaces in a UML description (in the sense of a multi-platform software: MFC, JavaWidgets, GTK) It doesn't work...
The fact that open source software, being open, thus able to be compiled at the client, causes some minor problems. For instance, to configure a software it needs to be recompilled, not the case w/ "self-configurable" (Windows) software...
Source code takes huge amounts of space too: depending on the software, 100Mb of code (including temp files) for a 5Mb software...
Open source software is not "narrow-band friendly", in the sense that if you download a package, you may need to download several others to make it work
I don`t condemn it being open, but I would expect the same level of easiness (or even better) than proprietary software: Something in the level of unzip - run, not install - run or unzip - compile - run...
TCPA will be an important victory for everybody on the internet. The first steps of it are already being made by Phoenix and Microsoft, and I'm sure that, when it's fully implemented, there won't be more viruses or even SPAM for that matter.
Since TCPA relies on trusted systems, anything that stays out of the "trusted ring" (i.e. virus writers, other untrusted systems, etc.) won't be able to affect the system.
I hope everybody here at Slashdot understands the importance of such a move in the computer industry, since it's not such a matter of monoculture, but a system that only allows trusted content to flow...
Ok, people, I guess this is a difficult thing to discuss... For people in Brazil, the real inventor was Santos Dumont (who has flown in 1906)
The difference is:
The Wright Brothers made THE 1st FLIGHT with something HEAVIER THAN THE AIR (apart from ballons)
Santos Dumont flew THE FIRST AIRPLANE...
The difference? Wrights' Brothers "plane" did not get airborn all by itself. They had a pulley/weight system, a kind of 19th century booster...
Santos Dumont got airborn all by itself. Start engine, gets airborn.
Well, Word 95 came after Word 2.0 , Windows 95 came after Windows 3.1, so, Yes, there's nothing new about it...
Everybody is wondering why should I shell some money for something I could have for free (a C compiler for Linux and even for Windows)
The magic word is Optimization. Not 1% faster optimization, but Heavy Metal optimization...
For one, try to compile something to Itanium...
For other, try optimizing your code to use MMX/SSE/SSE2 stuff. ICC vectorizes your code automatically...
XVID is (usually) compiled with the ICC. Wonder why? Because it's top quality code...
No, but you can send her a picture of the goatse.cx guy.
I am sure she'll never talk to you again...
Not to mention OS solutions for an abacus...
they have discovered another SCO programmer
Since when does SCO have programmers??? Ok, I guess they have at least one for each client...
Except for the guy who laid out all his print jobs in Frontpage. I think he was on acid.
Thank god he didn't use MS Paint...
BTW, where did you think we did our last A) posters for work???
Iraqui elections were managed by Diebold...
Chernobyl had a Diebold emergency system.
Titanic and Exxon Valdez had a Diebold iceberg detection system.
is that VC Manufacturers are biasing their 2D circuitry to work with LCD displays (since they are "precise sharp" so to speak...
There's also the issue of monitor configuration. Different cards may require diferent settings...
Just my 2 cents.
that cigarretes are the only drug that kills when used as prescribed...
Why would I give someone something that may cost his job?
all the brillian ideas that they will come up...
1 - Tax on email at ISP level (never mind they use their SMTP servers or hijacked others...)
The list goes on...
You can bet they spent the last couple of years (at least) to break it...
WHy, oh why?
It's been some years since I don't use floppys... Unreliable, small...
Zip Drives rock and fi it doesn't fit, CD-RW... Network transfers (even dial up) work better than floppies...
I always thought of that... How can open source be more reliable without a project...

Don't RTFA, it's a PDF...
Manufacturers liposuction their products to get rid of FAT...
I have an idea...
I get several viagra/xanax/ other stuff spam everyday.
If you open them, they will have an obfuscated url (probably with your encoded email) THAT WORKS...
Site you hate + working URL
DO THE MATH, FOLKS... Just get rid of the obfuscated part...
Isn`t Solaris a better choice than a Java+Linux system?
Seriously, I trust Solaris, and StarOffice is a nice program (but OpenOffice is better). I really don`t see a reason for this...
Porting Octave to your Palm or equivalent (if it's not already done)
Or, you could try developing something specific to what you are going to do...
I guess the main problem is typing (as opposed to a calculator, with lots of keys)
Apparently everybody is thinking of earth-like planets and stuff. Sorry, but NO.
1 - Vega is 25 light-years away. That's around the corner and "today" in astronomical terms
2 - Carl Sagan picked Vega not because of planets, but because there were none, just a bunch of dust... There was a RELAY there, not aliens...
3 - The news actually said about process that could happen; a balance between a dusty ring and an outer planet...
I guess being open is both blessing and cure.

As much as I hate M$ and everybody in this TCPA stabbing-consumers-in-the-back policy, there are some good stuff in it:
Hardware RNGs, criptographic hardware (that does stuff like SHA1, AES, RSA), the possibility of signing software...
Why? Because this may be useful in several situations.
The main problem with this is locking the competition out and forcing everybody to use it.
For the record, I woudn't trust my dog to Billy G.
I believe it's SCO who created that....
How can a tag replace one of the best singers of the USA??? This is not right!!
