  2. Re:widescreen on Intel Delays TV Chip Launch · · Score: 2, Informative

It's not so much the aspect ratio as it is the underlying technology. All the 4:3 TVs out on the market today are CRT-based or CRT-based Rear Projection. this technology has been around for many a year now, and it nice a cheap to produce, and hence sell at a low price. The hot new TV technologies that we are seeing in these widescreen TVs are such things as DLP, LCOS, and RPLCD (I'm not even going to touch on LCD or Plasma). These have some benefits such as a much thinner, lighter set (sub 100 lbs), no image burn-in, and arguably a better picture (big topic of debate). I am sure that companies like Texas Instruments (DLP) and Intel (LCOS) are charging a nice chunk of change for the chips. I think that most manufacturers are trying to sell the new tvs because once they ramp up production, It's going to be a lot cheaper in the long run, especially when your entire set consists of essentially a chip, a screen, and a bulb. and FWIW, I have not seen many of these new projection TVs in sizes smaller than, oh, say 42" (~106cm), so even at that size, the 4:3 image displayed would be larger than most CRT tube TVs. Besides, have you *tried* moving a CRT tv larger than 32"/ ~80cm?

if you read the forums over at sfftech.com, you'll see that a majority of the shuttles out there have no problem running a GeForce 6800 or GeForce 6800 GT (single slot, single molex power). Apparently those 250w power supplies really pack a punch. You can't run the Ultra, at least easily, as it's a double wide/ 2 slot card and literally won't fit in the case if it were to be closed up.

Kinda funny that I read about the next gen Nintendo console the day after I finally get around to buying a GameCube ;) Seriously though, I don't think that everything that the company does is "kiddy" or "cartoony". Obviously some titles such as Pokemon, etc are geared towards the younger crowd, you also have the other side of the spectrum with Resident Evil 4 and the like that are almost definitely not "kiddy". whether or not something looks cartoony or realistic shouldn't matter. The main thing regarding the quality of the game should be whether or not you are having fun playing it. I spent a good 2-3 hours last night playing the "kiddy, cartoony" Zelda: The Wind Waker, and I was having a blast doing it. That's the only thing that matters to me.

I can honestly say that while I consider myself fairly well educated in current technologies, if it weren't for this site, I wouldn't know what Ogg Vorbis is. You can't really blame the BBC for going with what is considered to be one of, if not *the* standard in audio streaming technologies in the marketplace. In fact, you need to give the BBC some credit because 90%+ of other companies out there wouldn't have even *thought* about trying Ogg Vorbis, even if they did eventually shelve it. Besides, who knows what formats all this new data from the BBC will be in when released. For all we know, it will be in various Ogg formats.

  6. Re:Questions on E3 - First Nintendo DS Pic · · Score: 1

you did, read the article, correct? in it it states that it will have a slot for GBA games as well as the new DS games, and that it is about as powerful as an N64, so we should now get to see n64 re-write lame-ass 3d games ;) nothing about battery or screen, but I'd hope that with a little extra graphical horsepower it'll have a higher res screen (at least one of them) isn't out of the question.

  7. Re:Centralised Game Server on E3 - Microsoft, EA Go Live, Halo 2 Dated, Xbox Videophoned · · Score: 1

using the optimatch functionality should find a server that you have a good connection to, and one of the main draws for xbox live is that they have centralized stat tracking for many of their games, of those many are sorted/ filtered by friends. Since the location of people isn't tracked via live, pushing tourneys based on location isn't possible. Some of the new functionality that is coming out in future games (tsunami) will allow you to join clans, and organize your own tournaments, if the games support it, of course.

Yes, I loved BeOS back in its heyday. When I learned that Giampaolo had gone to Apple, I figured he'd be beefing up the FS. His first work was probably the Journaling FS that is prevalent in Panther, and the rumored metadata in Tiger has his name all over it...
