Doom 3 Reaches Gold Master, Due August 5th

Rogerpq3 writes "Yes, this is the official word that [long-awaited PC FPS] DOOM 3 has been code released and has been approved for manufacturing! According to the .plan file of id CEO Todd Hollenshead: 'We literally just hung up with Activision and have confirmed that our latest release candidate has been mutually approved and is finally GOLD. So, the next question is release dates. Retailers in the States will be allowed to pick up games starting at 12:01 AM on August 3rd. The official street date is actually August 5th in the U.S.A., but some of your favorite stores will probably have it early for those of you who have to have it first. Check with your local retailer for that information... [Internationally] the UK will probably get it first, on or about August 6th. Everywhere else will probably be Friday, August 13th (cue Twilight Zone Theme) or close to that date, with just a few exceptions (e.g. Russia and Poland)'."

Also, the level designs in Descent went from relatively simple to very complex much too quickly IMHO for most players. Forming mental images of Quake was easy, since they were essentially 2D floor plans like real world buildings. Instead, they would be clever and use teleport to move the user to a different part of the grid where the "upper" room would be (but you wouldn't be able to see out of that upper room). Multi-level towers were usually just built at multiple spots on the world grid with teleports between the levels.

Or they'd play around with the layout so that after running around in a big circle, it felt like you were above the other room.

Sure, it wasn't real 3D, but it was extremely easy to bang out levels since you weren't trying to layout 3D objects without all of the tools of a 3D CAD program. If you are in the upper part, then the first render pass will be the lower room, which since you are outside it doesn't include the ceiling, and then the second render pass renders the upper room using a null texture for the floor making it transparent. You had to line it all up quite carefully, but you could then get a room-above-room illusion that you can actually see, which was pretty neat.

Ken also later added support for voxel (volume pixel) objects, allowing true 3D objects to take the place of selected in-world sprites, although that implementation used low-res voxels so they looked a little blocky.

Actually there was one other game that had the same problem, Midieval Total Warfare I believe.

I ended up buying a new sound card, and I still had some problems, just less frequentyly. UT2k4 cuts out sounds sometimes, but I'm not convinced that not a bug in the actual game itself.

Searching google about the problems I have I find nothing but other people complaining about the same type of stuff, with no solutions. With mixing in software, you remove all unknowns, plus you get Mac and Linux compatilbity.

Microsoft has had difficulty greater than even the OpenGL ARB because Microsoft (i)compels acceptance of the current Direct3D API due to its market dominance, (ii) doesn't have a core API thus it can't amend because the API changes every major version, (iii) is the sole developer for Direct3D and with its WHQL certification it has prejudice towards third parties submitting amendments to improve Direct3D or otherwise.

OpenGL is just as its name implies: a open graphics library. When the driver developers recognize a possible correlation or parallel development in the competitors, they approach the ARB with a common API to submit to amend the core OpenGL function set rather than dispute eachother with company-specific Extensions upon the OpenGL API. OpenGL's ARB is slower to allow these standards because they desire a true API (OpenGL) and not somthing that blows like the wind across the Brazilian Desert to the Cuban Icecaps and vice versa. I will take that ANYDAY over a rushed to market product that is riddled with bugs and the ending chopped and nice features left off for "expansion packs". However, the code that was released by "anonymous hacker" was FAR from complete, although that might not have been the full code (I don't trust Gabe's take on it one bit though). After that happened they used the theft as a reason for the game being nearly a year late, but I bet you that even without that excuse, it wouldn't have been anywhere near ready at that time. They're still working on the multiplayer aspects of the game now, with CS-Source going into open BETA in September.

Now I've never been one to get completely sucked in by MP-only FPSes, but even for it's time I just wasn't very interested or impressed with the final product. I thought it lacked contect, and really wasn't all that much of an improvement over the multiplayer Quake2. All it seemed to offer was better graphics and a demand for some pretty steep and expensive hardware to run it properly. Unreal Tournament, however, pleasantly suprised me. The game opens up with your arrival at Mars Research Facility of the massive United Aerospace Corporation. It's the year 2145, and you're a Marine newly assigned to the facility's security detail. For the first 15 minutes, you're not even issued a weapon - the action unfolds in a pace reminiscent of the opening of Half-Life, as you get oriented around the security building and watch some video primers on your new job and new home. In this opening act, you're familiarized with your Personal Digital Assistant, which will be your invaluable interface throughout the rest of the game. Using this handy gadget, you can download info from other people's PDAs as you come across them, adding codes, access keys, and emails that contain crucial information you'll need to progress through the 28 maps to follow. Here's what you really spend those first 15 minutes doing: gawking. This is your chance to absorb the full shock of magnificent graphics engine put to stunning use. The environments are huge-scale and packed with detail. The base is a convincing Mars Station - less a far-future design than a depressingly post-modern corporate park. It feels lived-in, too - from the skin mags scattered on the kitchenette tables to the nastiest in the public rest-room toilet bowls.

But no sooner do you get oriented with your gear - and with the very cool physics model that lets you rearrange just about any object in the place - then all hell breaks loose. Literally.

The base is hammered by a shockwave of satanic force, and immediately discover that almost everyone around you has turned into a flesh eating zombie - with a mindless devotion to snacking on you. Worse yet, the base has been invaded by a horde of nightmarish demons. Cut off from your fellow Marines (and stalked by some of their well armed zombie versions!), you've got only a comm link with your still human Sarge to steer you to safety

    DOOM AND THEN SOME

For those expecting a "classic" run and gun Doom game play, the biggest surprise may be just how substantial this game is. If you try to blaze through any of these 28 missions you WILL be humiliated. Instead the only route to access is a slow and steady one, sticking to shadows, searching every nook and crany for health, ammo, and access keys, and generally advancing as methodically as you can.

You've also got to figure out what's happening. As you make your way through the different levels of the base, the pilot is revealed via the PDAs you pick up, and in brief conversations with the few NPCs who weren't "turned" by the satanic attack. To make your way through the inevitably sealed-off access doors between levels, you'll have to read through email that progressively reveals a conspiracy of apocalypse proportions - the nefarious scheme of psychotic Dr. Betruger, UACs chief scientist, who's perverted a teleportation to open up a portal into hell-like dimension. (Oh and if you didn't notice Dr. Betruger is also keen on transporting his hellion army to earth.)

Gear is an absolute premium. All the old Doom weapons are back, but preciously rationed, and with an ever dwindling supply of ammo for each. It's just a big program and the system's processor and RAM is the weak area. If you choose any host equivalent to a AthlonXP 2100+ or a Pentium IV 2.4GHZ then you may choose any graphics accelerator and Doom3 will run fine.

    Let's see here...

that means you can use a Matrox G400, 3Dfx Voodoo4 or Voodoo5, nVidia GeForce2 or TNT2, PowerVR Kyro, or anything greater.

Here follows a website URL containing many screenshots of Doom3 Alpha rendered on a 3Dfx Voodoo5 (single VSA100, equivalent to Voodoo4) upon a Athlon 2200+; http://www.doom3.zarovka.com/

You can see where they cheat things by using your map and you will sometimes get "transported" somewhere else. There are numerous times that they just flattened sprites and made them solid in order to make bridges and other things to simulate multiple levels. So yes they did cheat by transporting you when you did things like going under water but the build engine is capable of doing rooms over rooms.
