    >The trick therefor for companies is to both have good account management AND hire professionals who care about not becoming a criminal.

I found myself on the receiving end of the recession a year ago, having to suddenly tune my interviewing skills again. I still think one of my best selling points was being able to answer the "Why should we hire you?" question with this:

"My position was eliminated and I was given a 90 day notice by my previous employer. At which point I was allowed to work through the full contract and not immediately escorted out. As an IT professional working under IT Managers who understood the security risk I posed, this was not an oversight, but the result of 8 years of working for this employer with integrity."

I think if I had been removed from the premises, as policy normally dictates, I wouldn't have even brought it up. But since it played out this way, it gave me an angle to show loyalty and some dignity. And yes, my accounts were set to expire at 5pm the day I left.

Going along with this comments's logic and the quote from the original post, I've found that users can be trained to hit the print screen button when they get a message they don't care about. We've got Printscreen 2000 installed all over the place, which makes it much closer to a one-click solution than the Windows default. They get a screenshot and keep doing what they're doing. I get the error message.

I was going to give props to streamsicle too, but I see I'm now just another 'ME TOO.' Streamsicle + Winamp is a hoot and ultra easy. Bandwidth is an issue but there are work arounds. (May sound obvious, but Streamsicle doesn't have any built in throttling, just does a 128 bitstream) Check the forums for tweaks.

  6. Freezer Believer on Resurrecting Dead Harddrives? · · Score: 5, Funny

I had a dead drive that I kept around for a year just in case some miracle recovery cure came up. Sure enough I heard about the freezing thing and six months ago broke out the HD, stuck it in a plastic bag (in hopes of tricking any condensation into adhering to the other surface) and threw it in the freezer while I went and "prepped my system" for getting a drive in and fired up asap.

On the first attempt I had put the drive in the freezer for only about 20 minutes (hey, I was anxious) and it fired up. I browsed to the drive's directory before it crapped out on me, but I knew I was close. So the drive went back in the freezer while I thought of plan B.

On the Second attempt I left the drive chill for 45 minutes and this time when I took it out, I brought it out on a frozen gel pack. I was able to get all my data w/o condensation or other complications.

I'd like to say that my data was fine, but somewhere along the line my poetry and stories really started to really suck. It must have been corrupted at some point because I swear it was better when I wrote it. Hopefully your data will retain it's value...

Call me practical, but nothing is going to be the "center of my livingroom" if it doesn't have a remote control. They could do whatever they want to an XBox (DVD burner, TV tuner, etc...) but if I have to ABABRLRLDDUU on a controller every time I want to skip chapters on a DVD, it'll always be a periferal.

"No honey, to change channels it's the two Triagles then the square. Just... No... No... that's for fast forward, just press the button with the Triangle on it! Give me that!"

  8. Re:I can tell you just which one to NOT buy on Portable CD-R/RW/MP3 Player? · · Score: 1

Yeah, in the same vein, I *want* to like the TDK MOJO that I bought a while back, but I just can't recommend it.

The navigation and panel display are really nice and easy to work with, but the sound quality stinks. I guess I assumed that if an MP3 sounded bad on playback then it was a problem with the .mp3 quality/bitrate/whatever. This player has taught me otherwise. I'm not particularly finicky, but there's some internal EQ'ing that just went really bad on this model. So I guess if you can find a way to listen to a player before buying it, I'd advise that. (I know, I'm brilliant) but that'll also give you a chance to get the *feel* of a player as well.

  9. Re:Funny, I was messing with that last night... on Buddylinks Stinks · · Score: 1

Yeah, if you're on Windows and you catch it, "Buddylinks Messaging Integration" can be removed via add/remove. Don't know if that's better or worse than the uninstaller. However I'd recommend also going into the registry to check for/remove references to "trickler" and Gator.com. I found them as well on the pc I was working on. Could be coincidental but FYI, YMMV, RTFM, RDA (random disclaimer acronym) etc...

  10. Re:That's really hurting the music industry. on Lyric Sites In Trouble With The MPA · · Score: 1

Well, clearly it's hurting them in the same way that tab sites hurt them. You know, because if you have the chords, then you could go out and REALLY infringe on their copyright. Somehow having some other amateur musician's interpretation of a Van Halen song means that I can reproduce it, I guess.

The unfortunate thing is that "they" have killed the good centralized guitar tab sites. OLGA.com is a joke now and I used to be able to go there for anything.

On the flip side, I have seen some artists put up lyrics at their websites with basically a "don't be a jerk" disclaimer. For me that works well. Thanks for the lyrics, I won't be a jerk, but who knows if the MPA is going to jump in and RIAA-up the whole situation...

  11. Re:"Sampling an artists music" on RIAA Moves Against College-Network Fileswapping · · Score: 1

Mmm... Gotta red light this one. Being one who spends 2 hrs. in the car a day, listening to the radio is a significant part of my day. I have about 5 stations that I listen to loyally, but then I often hunt for MP3's of the songs that struck me. I don't feel like I'm cheating on the stations' advertisers because I do listen to their station a lot, though I suppose my *feelings* wouldn't really matter in court.

Anyway, I guess what I'm saying is that the radio is my best source of new music and there's a whole bunch of songs that I have caught during the 2 week window that they were "popular," and I was really glad I was able to find them again through Kazaa before they (and their creators) faded back into obscurity.

I may not rush out and buy the album, but I can't buy a cd, go to a concert, or share with a friend any music that I can't remember.

Gotta agree with you here. I'm extremely happy with my Vonage phone as well. My *only* beef with it is that I live in a small town and the closest prefix I could get is for a town 20 miles away. I have yet to receive a solicitation on my Vonage line! WooHoo! Take that all you people with too much aluminum siding!

  14. If you're musically reclined... on Can You Suggest Any Non-Zero Sum Games? · · Score: 1

One of my favorites to play with a large group of kids is "Reverse Musical Chairs." Basically, the idea is the same as musical chairs, but as chairs are removed, nobody leaves the game and everyone has to find/make/become a seat. If you've never seen 35 people scramble on to 3 folding chairs, you're really missing out.
One goal, no enemy, it's pretty cool. The only thing is that it's really only fun once with a given group of people. Most of the challenge is the cooperation aspect. Once that's worked out, the game isn't very exciting.
