Well, congrats on beating the kook and helping put a mainstream face on the LP. (You do shower regularly, right? :) )

But seriously, please keep up the good fight, and check in with some of us "sane" libertarians from time to time at Tim West's blog.

I agree that the Libertarians you hear about the most tend to be closet anarchist nut jobs.

However, there is a bit of revolt in the ranks against the kooks. They've had way too much exposure for too long. For example, One local LP chapter actually rejected the National LP Platform and replaced it with their own.

I know that if the Libertarian Party doesn't reinvent itself soon and become a genuine political party instead of being more like a philosophical debate club, I (and a lot of people like me) will be leaving it.

Wait! So you mean it's illegal to steal cable in Tennessee? Thank god I don't live there! :)

  6. Re:Cell Phoney Tracking on Your Cell Phone Is Tracking You · · Score: 1
I don't see why people on /. seem to think they can have their cake and eat it too. No one forces you to buy a cell phone. I have a pager for when I'm at work; when I leave it goes in the drawer in my cubicle. The rest of the time I am electronic device free.

If I really wanted to have 911 usage ONLY, I could get an old phone, leave it off (battery disconnected for the really paranoid) and carry it everywhere.

You might think I'm oversimplifying the matter, but if you really examine it, you'll see that I'm not. With the exception of life threatening situations where you (or someone else) dials 911, every other call is fluff of one variety or another.

It's a simple matter of priorities. If you don't want to be tracked, hang up your cell and throw it into the nearest river. Otherwise, grow up and realize that it's a trade-off.

This is exactly what I use WASTE for. They descibe the project as "a mesh-based workgroup tool that allows for encrypted, private communication between distant parties on the internet, independant [sic] of local network organization."

I'm hooked up with my brother, my friends and his friends. Granted it's not ideal for obscure searching, but it's the best we can do while still flying under the radar, so to speak.

Besides, I wouldn't trust my friend's friend's friend's friend's friend that you never met and whose name you don't know as a source to download from. That's what gets people into trouble for using Kazaa/whatever.

An excerpt from SCO's last 10q:

The two licensing agreements signed by us to date resulted in revenue of $8,250,000 during the April30, 2003 quarter and provide for an aggregate of an additional $5,000,000 to be paid to us over the next three quarters. These contracts do not provide for any payments beyond 2003, except that Microsoft was granted the option to acquire expanded licensing rights, at its election, that would result in additional payments to us if exercised.

Microsoft alone is paying enough to bankroll SCO's lawyers... and if the SCO attack lawyers actually make some progress, we might find Microsoft exercising its "option to acquire expanded licensing rights". I gotta hand it to the MS people... even if they're evil, they certainly aren't dumb.

SCO will have enough money to pursue this to the bitter end. It's cheap FUD for MS.
