    Amusing, however app repositories arent confined to open source, Apple do it (At least for the IPhone), Nintendo do it, google do it, Sony do it. No reason Microsoft couldnt do it.

    I believe its the exact opposite, the American Empire broadly a good influence, which have a bad habit of kneejerk reactions which go over the top,
    Generally, i find most people who say otherwise, generally havent researched and thaught the issue through properly. Yes, the US has done unpleasant things, Name any government in the world that hasnt done in the last 10 years, generally in a similar Kneejerk fashion.

    US bashing is a popular passtime in Europe at the moment, and i expect in the rest of the world as well, and to be honest, its childish and stupid.

    I had the same issue. with the Huawei K3520 (the UK vodaphone version of the E169) I have managed to discover a workaround, however its annoying. If its not fixed before my last major camp in three weeks time, i'm going to downgrade back to 9.04. I dont really want to be fiddling with Kernel modules in the middle of nowere in the dark and wet of a typical english Winter. I'd rather just turn it on and it works,like 9.04 did.

    My install worked flawlessly, and all the internal hardware worked. (Camera, mic, display, Wireless, Ethernet, everything)
    However, It doesnt seem to work properly with my Mobile internet dongle. Looks like something kernel related.
    I can get it to work if i rmmod usb-storage immediately after i insert it (Why usb-storage?), before the deskop sees it.
    Sadly, for me this is a killer. My netbook is mainly for being able to use the internet while camping. (Sad but true)
    Shame. 9.04 worked flawlessly with it, first go.

    I have noticed something similar with an Aspire one netbook (6 cell). Only the difference is between the pre-installed linux (Something called Linpus) which i get about 6-7 hours, and Ubuntu Netbook, which gives me about 4-5.

    Of course, Ubuntu is so much more prettier and up to date than Linpus, and i'm loathe to switch back.

    The only thing i do that Linux has proved useless at is running Civilisation IV. Although i believe there is a lot of Eastern European "freeware" that doesnt run on it as well.

    I had this conversation when i tried to explain this to my dad. (Whos not too far off 70) What eventually convinced him was the fact that the authors do *not* do this for free. they do it so they get the reputation, the bug fixes, and the enhancements from others.

    To be fair, the UK is in a worse position than most EU nations. We import *far* too much food, while letting the supermarkets get away with squeezing the farmers so much they have been going out of business. There was always going to be a disproportionate effect when so much of the food cost was going in transport from foreign climes.

    $9 my huge arse.
    Currently my local Petrol station is selling Diesel at 1.29 GBP a Litre, which is 5.87 GBP a Gallon or $11.57.

    Petrol is 1.16 GBP a litre, or 5.27 GBP a Gallon or $10.38.

    Fortunately, although my car is a Diesel, I seem to be getting an average of about 55mpg out of it at the moment.

    Unfortunately, if you dont think conventional Scientific wisdom has its own share of theories that are not backed by facts, i direct you the "String theory", from which so many PHD's have been made over the last few decades.

    Not totally dissimmilar to creationism, it happens to fit a bunch of facts which may or may not be true, and is unlikely to be proven either way.

    Of course, As there trying to dissaociate Creationism from Religion, another way of reading the "facts" they rely on is that we were all created by Aliens from the planet "Zog" who were on a bit of a bender after "DRuuth" celebrated his 4096th cycle (They count in 16's naturally). Boy was that one to remember!
    Naturally, if you try to suggest this to one of them, they get rather Irate. Trust me on this. :-)

    What microsoft should do it fix all the issues that have come up so they cant reject it again for being useless.

    That would sort out those evil IBM'ers and dispicable OSS ne'er-do-well's

    I was most surprised when I found that Redhat (Our cooperate Linux of Choice) appears to allow this as the default. Certainly, The Debian box i use as a home server never used to allow that, however, checking i see that since I upgraded from Woody, it does allow remote SSH as root. Thats worrying.
    Well have to fix that.

    Yes, especially as its April 1st, and there is no mention of it on Mozilla's website. I doubt Mozilla would be so stupid anyway. The problem with patents is the sheer MAD ness. We could no doubt discover that some reviewer at the patent office has rubber-stamped MS's request for a patent on base 2 or something like that.

    The next totally unbreakable/hackable system will be the first. This applies in most engineering situations since right down to breaking things with a rock tied to a stick. Replace the rock with a bit of chalk and all of a sudden, your hammer breaks when you use it

    With a system as complex as a computer (And people these days tend to forget just how complex a computer really is, both on its hardware and software levels) the trick is to make it as difficult to do AND make it so its obvious something has gone wrong/been tampered with in case it does so someone who wants to modify the system has to throw too much cash and enginuity at the problem to make it worth the effort. All this is on top of restricting access to the boxes, making voters verify against something on screen, printed reciepts, and so on.
