    (And for the record, in many places, cars still have to be "registered" for tax purposes even if they don't have a tag.)

    Have you watched the movies? Of course there's money (likely of various forms)... Luke sold his speeder to get money to pay Han, with a promise of more from Leah. Han, of course, had a bounty on his head from Jaba that Fet collected. The specifics of the Star Wars economy was never laid out, because it's completely irrelevant to the storyline.

    The franchise authority has ZERO power over internet services. (hint: the franchise is for TV services) While complaints about their idiotic bandwidth metering MAY be factored into any franchise renewal, they have no direct power to intervene. If they say you used 100TB, then you used 100TB - period. There's no proving otherwise, and no legal entity will even bother to listen.

    Really. I don't buy their lame excuse. If his modem works, they have to have the correct MAC in the system. Why would the money printer, err, bandwidth meter have to have shit entered "by hand"???

    I can find PLENTY of hog farms, but not a single solar panel anywhere. There may be plenty of "plans", but there's no evidence of any in operation.

    More accurately, they fight anything that disrupts the power monopoly that lines their PACs.

    For example, try to build yourself a lake (pond, whatever.) Outside zoning restrictions in urban areas, there's no paperwork, no inspections, and next to no complaints. TRY to put a generator in that dam, then there's mountains of paperwork, permits, inspectors, and power company lawyers suing you for the rest of your life.

    The term you are looking for is "risk averse". The school district doesn't want to be sued into oblivion for "ignoring a bomb threat" -- no matter how BS it may appear, if a bomb actually did go off (pretty much anywhere in the city) after receiving a "warning", there'd be a thousand people suing within the hour.

    And/Or blends with more valuable (rare) distillates. TEL, MTBE, etc. are chemical hacks to prevent the lower grade compounds from igniting and burning as readily.

    Right, because the rules banning incandescent bulbs weren't stupid, and arbitrary at all.

    I've replaced more CFLs in the last decade than I have incandescent's in the last 40! And there's nothing at all hazardous or toxic in a tungsten filament bulb.

    Highly unlikely. If you *do* manage to generate a crash sufficient to destroy the "black box", you will almost certainly be dead.

    In mysql, count() was 99% a lie. It never referenced the actual rows. It used indexes and "reference statistics" to answer the queries quickly, vs. correctly. I always found that infuriating. (it was one of a very long list of dumbass things mysql did -- and mostly still does)

    What? Ok, they may be denied a CCP, or even a handgun permit. But there are plenty of "no paperwork" firearms that ANYONE can get. (even felons who know they aren't supposed to have them.) There are no such laws prohibiting "developmentally disabled" people from owning firearms.

    In this case, the attackers had firepower that out classed and out ranged anything anyone inside the facility would reasonably be carrying around.

    Banning guns doesn't retroactively erase them from history. They exist, and they always will. Criminals will still obtain them; they don't care about your fucking laws . Bans prevent lawful, responsible ownership. They do NOTHING to prevent criminals from having them. Do you seriously think criminals care how many laws they're breaking?

    A "civilian" AK-47 (semi-auto) is (a) LEGAL, and (b) easy to buy LEGALLY in most parts of the country. (including CA). To people who don't know any better, everything is an AK-47; it's likely the only gun designation they know. (if pushed, "M-16" might come up, but no one commits crimes with american guns.)

    As for full-auto... that's a simple modification to a large selection of semi-auto weapons. Sure, it's illegal, but that doesn't make it any bit harder.

    Some firearms require licensing, but not all. (i.e. handguns) And the gun rights lobby screams murder about that. (it's a convenient index/map of where all the guns are, when the nazis want to take them all away.)

    A license to drive is supposed to indicate you know how to drive, and it thus a means to revoke that privilege. In reality, it's more a tax than anything else.

    Voter registration is there to make sure a person only votes once. If you don't care to vote, then you don't register! If you don't want to shop at Sam's Club, don't buy a membership.

    I have. If you're connected to the network at the time of installation, it will fetch the latest versions of everything from the selected mirror(s). If you install from an outdated copy of a mirror, it's the same BS as a windows install, albeit far less annoying (it's ONE update/upgrade (and reboot) and you're done, unlike the M$ method of installing a patch (reboot), patch the patch (reboot), patch the patch of the patch (reboot), ...)

    Exactly. The dogma of that era was to simply let them take over the plane. They're just going to fly it to Cuba or something, or land someplace and hold everyone hostage until their uncle is let out of prison (etc.) We had ZERO experience with suicidal jihadists flying planes into the things.
