i installed edubuntu about a week ago, and my 6 year old is constantly on my server now... she digs the tuxpaint, gcompris education suite, four-in-a-row, and of course the potato guy in tux mode!
Most studies done on violence and video games support the conclusion that violent video games can increase aggressive behavior in children and adolescents, especially boys, researchers said on Friday. ... "The majority of the studies would suggest there are effects," said Jessica Nicoll of Saint Leo University in Saint Leo, Florida, who worked on the study. ...
the economist's cover story on the 06aug05 issue talked about the earlier illinois study. it's a good read -- sounds a lot more confident in its speech and a little less like someone's over dramatizing a weak case. And who exactly is this lady that says the studies "would suggest" that there are effects? and what did she do while "working on the study"? spelling and grammar checking? did she print it out? or is she some kind of licensed professional that actually studied something?!
One study showed that children who played a violent game for less than 10 minutes and then took a mood assessment test rated themselves with aggressive traits and aggressive actions shortly after playing. ...
now that's some convincing facts! these kids rated themselves?! and what were the doctors doing? oh! they were probably on their way to the bank w/ their checks from whoever asked them to rig up this study!
i could continue quoting this article and questioning its accuracy and worth, but i think i'm preaching to the choir. so i'll wrap it up: if you boil down this article to the only thing that sounds solid, you get one line:
The APA also encourages parents, educators and health care providers to help youth make more informed choices ...
which we should all be doing for our children anyway, shouldn't we?
i'm a father and a gamer from back in the day. i will always play games w/ my kids, and i will always talk to them about what's right, what's wrong, what's real, and what's not. the same goes for the tv and movies they watch, the books they read, and the music they listen to. i'm involved in their lives! go figure!
no, i don't understand the deep inner workings of my pharmaceuticals... but then, there isn't hordes of cracker bastards incessantly trying to steal my identity through my medicine cabinet!
also, i just wanted to point out that for once IE came out on top for being so far behind...
if that's the case, why do you read/.? isn't this the joint for those of us who can barely stand to turn our machine's off!?
anyways, to keep this post on topic, on the side i design and create PHP/MySQL sites for organizations like regional hockey teams and the local elementary's PTO. it's fun, looks good on a resume, and brings in a little extra cash for a few of my other habits (like xbox, ps2, gamecube, diet coke, books... oh, and eating... sometimes eating...)
There are no religious issues inherent to the debate over abortion rights.
What rock are you under? The Catholic Church has come out and told it's congragations in no uncertain terms that if they vote for a pro-choice president, they're going to hell. And even if those weren't the exact words, that was the exact idea. Maybe to you it's not a religious issue, but to millions of sheep... i mean church-going Christians... it is.
It is thanks to this topic alone that Bush is so popular with the religious. If these one-topic-minded church-goers would look at the majority of his administration's policy decisions, they'd see that little else they do appears to be motivated by anything more than arrogance and money, much less the teachings of Jesus.
Bible: "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth."
Bush: "Some people call you the elites; I call you my base."
Bible: "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God."
Bush: "There are some who feel like that the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is bring them on..."
To Christian/.ers reading this: I'm not a Christian or Religion basher, but I freely bash anyone who doesn't think for themselves. It seems many of these people hear "I'm Pro-Life" and "I'm a good Christian" and they just believe it; frankly that makes me sick.
And to the churches telling their congregations that they're going to hell if they vote for this candidate or that candidate: I think you should all be put away for treason or what ever term covers illegally pressuring people in order to influence an election.
Sorry, prell, that became a rant there. And only the very beginning of it was aimed at beginning of your post. I obviously agree with the last paragraph of your post.
"Ok, slashdot, let's see who can come up with the best off-the-wall looney conspiracy theories to twist this around as a malicious, underhanded tactic, and some kind of "proof" that Bush is evil incarnate!"
um... since when do you need proof to show that w's evil incarnate? if you want to talk about malicious and underhanded tactics, i'd like to enter the last four years of american policies (yeah, pretty much all of them) into evidence as exhibit A.
Why can't people just find an *honest* way to earn a living any more? F'ing losers...

it took a 10 second google search for "hybrid battery disposal" to find these three results on the first page:
toyota's recycling initiatives
hybridcars.com's FAQ
treehugger.com article with some good resource links
seriously, man, use your noodle.

sure, 'shut down' is the first item on the start menu. unless you move the task bar to the top of the screen where it really should be!
hmm, funny... seems that with the task bar at the top, windows reminds me of some other, far superior os... again...
(ooo... and the clock is in the upper right, too...)
d00d, the way this headline read in my FF RSS feed i thought they found CRACK in the space shuttle!
i was like, 'i know those astronauts are under some pressure, but d@mn! '
no, i don't understand the deep inner workings of my pharmaceuticals... but then, there isn't hordes of cracker bastards incessantly trying to steal my identity through my medicine cabinet!

as previously reviewed on /., paul graham's book hackers & painters covers this topic.
i'm a coder and my wife is an artist, so we wage this debate on a semi-constant basis... i say code can be poetry.
wow... did you guys get off topic or what?!
oh, oh, wait! i want to talk about something else to distract everyone from the fact that we're locking ourselves in our own microwave oven:
Q: why do you think W is straining to get to the moon?
A: because that's where he and "his base" are headed while us poor folk fry down here!
discuss!
