    ...I'm starting to feel more and more drawn to check Postgres out. I've been mostly happy with MySQL though; I just want to see what I'm missing (VACUUM scares the shit out of me - but is it still there?)

    This is an extremely common phenomenon among Open Source authors. They often use their position as a way of acting out their anger. I was criticized because I use Firefox in a more intense way than other users! When I posted a carefully written response to the criticism, I got criticism for posting a long response.

    That's sad. My suggestion: next time try to flame them for not being able to do that right. This will likely make them prove they can; be sure to wear an asbestos suit when reading responses, though :)

    It looks like the technology is finally converging towards Lisp. Maybe 40 years isn't THAT much, after all...

    (If you think about it, it started quite a time ago, since xml is isomorphic to sexps.)

    Lack of coherent newbie documentation.

    I'd take that further - lack of coherence in general; that is:
    • No coherent installation of software. (Please, spare me configure && make && make install...)
    • No coherent deinstallation of software.
    • No coherent configuration of applications.
    • No coherent desktop.
    • ...
    • Profi^WNo coherent APIs, libraries, ANYTHING.
    In general, if you want to do something, there are gazillion ways to do it. Choice is good, yes, but come on!

    If I put cheap memory into the machine - I should expect it to crash. If I run bad drivers - I should expect it to crash.
    That's because in such situations you SHOULD expect the box to crash.
