Does not mean what some of you think it means. All it does is prevent the state from establishing a state church like the Church of England and interfering with (disrupting) church activities and the free exercise of your freedom "of religion". There is no freedom from religion. Your rights do not extend into the lives of others. If you choose to be an atheist, that is you personal choice but you cannot impose that choice upon the rest of society, other individuals or restrict the free exercise of religion by anyone even if they are public officials. They still retain all of their personal rights and freedoms.
I'm not sure how I feel about this park and the use of tax payers funds but then again, I'm not sure if it is fair for the tyranny of the minority to always win over the majority. If the majority of tax payers are in favor of this, I don't see the problem. There is plenty of tax money spent on other things that are not necessarily for the benefit of all tax payers.
You're an idiot. Freedom *of* religion necessarily means freedom *from* religion. You are free to practice your religion because you are free *from* being coerced by other religions. Otherwise, you are forcing a religion onto people who don't believe. And no, it is not okay to fund this with tax-payer money even if the majority agree, just as it would not be okay to bring back slavery if the majority agreed. Minority rights must be protected in a civilized society. But, when overbearing tyrants like you want to force your religion/ideology/whatever on everyone else, you always whine about the "tyranny of the minority".
In any event, your Pat Robertson inspired interpretation of the first amendment is not what is understood by the Supreme Court, even on the conservative side.
Besides, take a step back and look at what you are suggesting. You are arguing that, so long as 50%+1 of the people of a state vote to pay to support a particular religion, they should be able to force their religion upon everyone else in the state.
Actually, this wouldn't be a violation of the First Amendment. If you recall the text,
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of
religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;
IOTW, there's no law being made here and no prohibition against any other religion other than Judeo-Chritianity in this. (I suppose Muslims are included also, since they read the old testament, I think.)
By the way, I agree it is a horrendous idea to include taxpayer dollars, just that it isn't unconstitutional.:P
You fail Constitution Law 101. The key phrase is "respecting an establishment of religion". Allocating money to a theme park requires the use of legislation. If that legislation supports Fundie Evangelical Protestant Christianity, then it violates the first amendment. By giving tax money to the theme park, you would be giving preference to Fundie Evangelical Protestant Christianity over all other forms of Christianity (the literalist interpretation of Genesis being considered a bit bizarre and stupid, even in the early Church), Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and so on, and so on, and so on.
There are other fantasy theme parks, so why not this?
Because they are seeking government incentives. If it were all privately built, we could point and laugh, but that would be the end of it. When they receive government backing, they are basically giving government support to Evangelical Protestant Fundamentalism.
Yes, lets forget about laws and giving sentences that are in line with the crime. No matter how you want to spin it, spamming clearly isn't as big crime as rape, violence or killing someone.
In fact, screw sentences and court. Let's just kill anyone that breaks laws.
Well, this is Russia we are talking about. I mean, if they can do it to journalists that question the government, certainly they could take out some basement dweller.
Or, if we really must follow the rule of law, then force him to make financial restitution for the 500k computers he has destroyed. He'll either kill himself or be destitute the rest of his pathetic life.
you know... precedent is only set by cases they (judges) choose to publish. They can rule anyway they want and then not let the case be published in the proper way which then prevents it from ever being referenced in future trials.
Most people are also unaware that judges regularly edit the transcripts after the fact. (The reason they don't let you tape record proceedings without permission.)
Actually, precedent is set at the appellate level. The trial court level does not set precedent. And, even then, the precedent is only binding on lower courts. Although, other appellate courts at the same level sometimes use those decisions as "persuasive authority" in their own decisions, even though they are not strictly bound by them.
Exactly. We should never have stopped feeding them to the lions. "Faith-based" people aren't even human, having deliberately forfeited their intellect (assuming they had one to begin with, which many did not). We should use them as livestock for pet food.
Good grief, you're an idiot. I guess you assume everyone who is not a fundie right-wing idiot like you must therefore be an atheist?
It's one thing to be deluded that Obama is The One
Only Republicans talked about Obama being The One. Kind of ironic since so many Republicans quite literally stated that Bush was put into the White House by God. Talk about your psychological projection.
All men have consciences. Some apply them inconsistently. That may be a personal failing of Assange, I don't know. What's important is the data not the man.
Well, that is what this is all about. Find something taboo to stick to him so he becomes a pariah. Never mind what the leaked information is. So long as they can get people to think he is some kind of deviant, enough people can be distracted.
The Japanese are not criticizing us, I don't think.
Actually, they are. The problem is that Japanese don't learn their own history, so most don't even realize that their army massacred and raped so many civilians in WWII.
I've never understood the "derision and scorn above and beyond the call of reasonable criticism" for Pelosi or Reid. Can you give me some examples of initiatives, legislation, or comments that describe what you're talking about?
Fux News, Rush Limbaugh, et al. tell them to hate Pelosi and Reid, so they do. It gives them a face to vent at during the standard Two Minutes Hate they undergo.
I'd say the chances of this are pretty likely. Barring a major upset, Obama will get the Dem nomination and the GOP will likely pick someone that makes GWB look like Einstien. I wouldn't be suprised to see "we must stand by our North Korean allies" Palin get the nod from the GOP.
Modded troll by some wingnut, but you're definitely right. Who thinks Obama is not going to get the Dem nomination? And, looking at the current crop of GOP candidates, we are likely going to wind up with someone like Palin. Gingrich thinks he is a serious candidate, but he would now be considered too "rational" and "nuanced" for the GOP. The current two-party plan is to keep the nation divided into two camps and have each side scared shitless of the incompetent fucker on the other side so that they feel like they have to vote for the least of two evils "just this one more time".
In short, we are doomed.
Sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel is the headlight of an oncoming train.
moving the capital around has everything with free markets, but exclusive deals, special treatments and subsidies for the chosen do not. Bailouts are such cases. Some failing bank or a car manufacturer gets bailed out, but your favorite bakery at the corner does not. Free market is a fair judge, treats all the same and the winners and losers are decided only by their merits, not by who they know.
The back and forth in this thread really just shows that a "free market" is an illusory concept. It is useful to a limited degree, but you have to keep in mind that it is not possible in real life.
Once you throw government into the mix, you necessarily limit the freedom of the market. But, without a government, you don't have the structure to set up anything resembling a "free market".
The other point that seems to have been missed is that, although you are right in saying that the Irish situation is not due to a real "free market", the term "free market" is what is thrown about to keep the proles in line.
A Domain name is personal property, a court order taking it from someone without notice of the opportunity to respond to a complaint violates the second principle of natural justice, Audi alteram partem, a important backbone to our legal system. The concept of Audi alteram partem is extremely sacred in common law and requires the other side at least the opportunity to be heard before any action is taken. This is reinforced by several portions of the US Constitution and endless relevant case law. Any action, in any common law court, requires notice to be given and a reasonable time to respond to the allegations prior to and decision made by a court. You cant take someone property in absentia without at least giving them reasonable notice. PERIOD.
Well, considering that the US government has gone so far as to throw out the nearly 800 year-old requirement of Habeus Corpus, it is not surprising that they are doing all they can to destroy any and all vestiges of civilized law. All that corporations and the US government ultimately wants is "fuck with us, or have something we want to take, and we will destroy you" kind of law.
They will be accused of infringement on three counts : infringement by thought, infringement by word, infringement by deed, infringement by action - *FOUR* counts!

I wish I could text pictures or video from the highway. I see people driving so dangerously that it's effectively assault, all the time. I can't drive 5 miles on the highway, or 5 minutes in a town/city, without seeing people texting while driving as they do something dangerous. I sometimes pull up next to them and take a picture with them with my phone that I keep in my dashboard, which used to get most of them to stop (though the past year or two it often sends them into an insane self-righteous rage).Taking the picture isn't distracting to me as I drive; it's about as distracting as punching an FM preset button, and I make sure I'm not changing lanes or in any other complex driving situation when I snap the picture. I yearn for the day when my car has 360 degree video all the time as part of its security system, which should connect to my phone or a car WWAN.
I wish I could then press a button to send the picture, or (even better) video, to 911. I'd then voice call 911 (on speakerphone), and give details. If the other driver were really nuts I might even follow them for a while, or just watch them careen off into traffic, updating the cops. I'd get their license plate in the shot. I'd show up to testify against them in court, swearing to the video evidence. And then maybe these lunatics might keep their deranged driving off the roads.
So, you're the idiot I saw swerving around on the road trying to take a picture of some guy texting while driving! Well, I got you, pal! You know what I did? I whipped out my handy-dandy video camera and recorded your dangerously swerving ass! So, suck on that!
Take the kid downtown, put him in a cell, call parents. If the parents act like asses press charges against the kid, if they dont and promise to take care of the issue let him out. Once little billys friends find out you get arrested for this, it wont happen anymore. If it does, do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars. Press charges as a repeat offender and force the kid to spend a week in juvie. ( My little brother had to spend a week in juvie for something along these lines. It straightened him right out.)
Come on! We can't do that! Their self-esteem might be affected!
here's what I want released, while we're in a release anything kinda mood... How about someone release the documents we captured from saddams oval office? They were referred to as the harmony docs, and were being translated by the FMSO. Remember the october surprise in the 2004 NYTimes: "bush leaks saddam's nuke primer on web"? I saw many of those docs... WMD specs, bio/chem training manuals, evading un inspectors. How 'bout releasing those?
Well, you could visit Argentina and ask Saddam himself. It was his double that was hanged. He was spirited away to Argentina and took up residence in Hitler's old villa.

Apologies for stereotyping... but you must be American...
Apologies for stereotyping, but you must be a douchebag.
Civilized countries arrest someone, then try him. People are not guilty until proven guilty... and you certainly won't get shot until proven guilty.
Tell that to Anna Politkovskaya.

Ok, we get it, you think all rich people are idiots with no empathy. Awesome. Can we move on now?
Not idiots, just out of touch in the "let them eat cake" style. And no, most rich people do not have empathy. It might affect their bottom line.
