  1. Does it work? on TarProxy Creates Tar Pit... For Spammers · · Score: 1

"If this really works... it could work."

You don't say. I would think that if it really worked it wouldn't work!

  2. Fair Credit Act on CAPPS II Trials Begin in March · · Score: 1

Doesn't the Fair Credit Act allow you to know when your credit history might've acted against you (and to get a free copy of your credit report if this happens)? I would think being marked yellow or red was an example of working against you. So, how are they getting around this?

  3. Imagine on Unreal Security Hole · · Score: 3, Funny

Imagine the bad publicity games would receive if a worm on the scale of Slammer had been created.

I wouldn't mind seeing which bank used unreal servers in their ATMs :)

  4. I don't see the big deal on File-sharing and AOL · · Score: 5, Insightful

The article even points out that MSN and others have refused to comment. Why then is AOL so suspicious just because of their TW relationship?

If _I_ had an ISP, I wouldn't comment either (I'd just go for another swim in my money....)

These big companies rarely have a unified front, as /.ers have pointed out many times on the media/hardware manufacturer copy protection debates.

  5. Re:Engineering Gets Hit Too on Grade Inflation in Higher Education · · Score: 1

I happen to be at graduate school at northwestern. I think that there IS grade inflation here, but not nearly as much as at other schools. I know many people (myself included) who have pristine grade points where we haven't demonstrated that we deserve them. In contrast, Caltech probably had grade DEflation--I produced work which is better than work here that has gotten me an A & I was really hanging onto a 3.0 by the skin of my teeth.

In the end, I don't think the GPA matters as much to people in Eng. & App. Sci. -- Letters of Rec. will get you into grad schools & the degree alone will get you a job. I've had very few people ask why my GPA at Caltech was "so low."

  6. How prevalent is this problem? on AT&T Identifies Widespread Security Hole - In Locks · · Score: 1

    1) You need a key to begin with.
    2) If your institution is only using traditional pin and tumblers, it is very vulnerable to picking and outright impressioning already.
    3) Most institutions that have anything to protect already use the appropriate safeguards that he reccomends--both universities I've attended have used Medeco locks. These are patented, but not security through obscurity--they have inclined cuts, making impressionng EXTREMELY difficult. Government labs I've been to are on card swipe.

I can't remember any place other than high schools that still use the traditional locks.

Perhaps someone out there can tell me if there institution uses them? I wouldn't mind an address as well.... :)

  7. Re:I don't like MS, BUT ..... on MS Must Ship Java With Windows Within 120 Days · · Score: 1

Doesnt' MS have to include AOL with Windows? They are a dominating company. But is providing various third party apps really fair? This may get those apps used more, but than won't the Sun VM dominate even more? Setting aside your feeling of MS, is this good?

Also, MS doesn't provide updates to the third party software they are forced to include. I suspect that this may become an issue in the future. What happens when Sun updates their VM, as they often have to?
