    The water table is very high where I live, less than 10'. Even when it doesn't rain, a few neighbor houses have their sump pumps kick on a few times a day.

    I think we have the technologies to make water proof underground dwellings and the means to move the water to a different location.

    Or have a significant portion of our dwellings underground.

    Not only would the damage from a tornado be much less, heating/cooling would require much less energy.

    The technology exists to greatly reduce our net emissions. It's the responsible thing to do. Climate change or not, we should pollute less.

  5. Until 100% of vehicles on the road are self driving and connected, I'll never turn over control. I like the assist features but my hands will stay on the wheel and my eyes on the road.

    A group of 10 coworkers and I took part in a charity plane pull for the special Olympics. It's actually quite easy to get the plane moving and once it starts to roll gaining speed is easy.

    The impressive thing to me is the Tesla maintained traction. My car has the power to pull a plane. I don't know if it had the traction though

    Are you sure he hasn't tweeted a claim of responsibility yet? A bit like ISIS claims every attack was from one of their supporters, just to keep their name in the headlines.

    I vote 3rd party when I see fit. I will also leave something blank if I find none of the candidates are worth my vote. Our primaries were this past Tuesday, I only voted in about half of the races.

  12. In the US, you don't get pulled over unless there is reasonable suspicion that some law was violated. I am also not aware of any state that charges someone based only on the results of a roadside breathalizer machine. Those results are usually used in conjunction with other sobriety tests along with visual accounts from the officer.

    I have a hard time believing many, if any, convictions are overturned. My opinion is people who were arrested at DUI checkpoints are the only ones with a case, as there was no other law being broke at the time they were checked.

    I wrote my Republican critter about this issue.. his response was 100% political (even though my letter was focused on not trusting the monopolies to make changes to benefit the consumers). Freshman critter as well... I will vote against him every chance I get assuming the other candidate is at least somewhat competent.

    IMO the key is replacing the roof itself with solar panels that enclose the home while generation power. Where I live it's almost exclusively asphalt shingles... I'm sure there's no environmental cost to making those....

    Trump got around 62mil votes. There are roughly 250 million voting age adults in the US. Around 25% of eligible voters chose him.

    Only thing I saw in Beijing 5 years ago was an orange haze... maybe there were some trees there.

    Now Chongqing is a different story but that's due mostly to the mountainous region surrounding the city.

  17. Emerald Ash Borer has wiped out just about every Ash tree in the region... they get most treated ones as well. My town took the preemptive action to cut them down and replace them with other native species.

    If they hadn't been so greedy in the past, maybe fewer people would have cut the cord.

    The main companies are still seeing high profits. Their CEOs are still making 10's of millions of dollars per year.

    When the going gets tough, they just charge customers more to protect their profits knowing the customer is screwed since the market lacks true competition.

    I cut the cord in April, 2009. I paid $46.95/month for internet. Now I pay $80.70/month. Service hasn't gotten any better during that time.

    So your solution is to give up on 80-90% of the students because they require more help to learn?

    I believe Bill Gates is correct, the root of the problem isn't necessarily funding but changing our societal norms. There are large subsets of Americans that do not value education and they pass those values on to their kids.

    In Japan they have different types of high schools. Some are college prep and some are vocational prep. I do agree that we cannot treat all kids like they are the same but they should all be given the same chance to succeed.

    On one hand the vote was unanimous which makes me think, without research, the guy might do a good job.

    On the other hand, any time Congress agrees on something without any contention makes me feel, as a citizen, that I'm about to get bent over and rammed hard from behind.

    Sadly, Americans still think they have the best and greatest in the world.

    Uh, I've never met an American that thought we had the best mass-transit system in the world. In fact, every time I've ever had a discussion it's quite the opposite, how much our transit system sucks.
