Exactly, art does produce something. It's just not as tangible and quantifiable. We'll have to wait a few years before science can discover the wirings of the brain before we reach that point. Also, art is much more often a selfish indulgment, while coding is primarily done by request (people code what other people need). That doesn't of course mean that you can't code just for yourself. Or that, indeed, coding can be art too!
But wouldn't most people have difficulties accepting anybody who has lived in the US for two years, seeing as the practice itself is unacceptable behaviour?
But it IS irrelevant...if you're willing to wait 20,000 years.
It's relevant in Scandinavia.
Rings that were bolted into the rock here 200 years ago, to tie boats to, are now several metres up in the air (this was confusing for me when I was a child: "what's the point of having a ring when it's like 10m away from the water!"). The Ice Age ended about 8000 years ago. Difference between then and now: 800 metres. Current rise: 0-9mm per year (rising faster to the north). How fast will a landmass rise, if it's freed of it's ice today?
Please use wikipedia and google at your discretion to learn more about this "bobbing" phenomenon. Hell, use Microsoft Encarta if you will!
Last time I tried Irfanview, I found it kind of klunky. XnView is smoother in my opinion. The Windows version is free for personal use (although the Linux/etc. versions are free for any use) and it reads a billion image formats).
... And I just tried Irfanview again just to confirm my suspicion. The Pagedown key in Irfanview goes to the next picture in the folder. Same as XnView, except if the current picture scrolls vertically, then it just scrolls (wtf?). XnView has a smarter interface.
That's true, but people also want information about how big it was, and in this case it was big, meaning a lot of people around the world will wonder about friends&relatives in the region. if it's a "normal" quake, with only a few deaths and some injuries, it's nothing for me to even think about seriously. But when the nbumbers jump from 600 to 3000, to 7000, and still going, there's suddenly a very real possibility that the people I personally know who live there might be affected. Not to mention if you actually live in the region itself (local news).
If you don't know anyone there however, the numbers might still be meaningless, at least in the grand scale of things. Therefore it becomes like a high score, where every new and higher number comes with an increased 'wow' factor, like the ever-incresingly-catastrophic catastrophe movies.
It depends on what kind of house you are in, and what floor you're on. The higher you are in a house, the more the swaying of the house can be felt. Once I was sitting in a chair in my room (3rd floor in a concrete house), and felt my head getting bumped against the fridge, loose things mocing a bit, and some sounds. Guys from the 1st floor later asked, "Quake.. what quake?". Also, I think local topography can affect to some degree.
It seems the body count is now somewhere around 8000-9000, but I do think it's going rise quite a bit still, I recall hearing that even the military can't reach their own in the worst hit areas. Communication is basically down. I'm just glad that I live in a seismically "safe" place on the Earth...
[flame class="ignorant bashing"] Since there are now more than twice the casualties in a single event compare to 9/11, shouldn't we start a War on Tsunamis now? [/flame]
And it was around 3200 just a few hours ago. Here's the Reuters article. Watching BBC world, it appears that some northern areas of Sumatra still can't be reached, and the situation there is unknown. Here's a map of the affected area.
Yeah.. MMORPG makers should watch.Hack//SIGN. There they had these knights, normal players, that belonged to a kind of "police force" and was founded by the players themselves.
Hearing and reading a joke isn't the same thing. If you hear it you're usually forced to do so, and you might also feel inclined to give some indicator that you recognized it as a joke.
Actually, I think the iRiver looks better and easier. That's an entirely subjective argument, like how you like your mobile phone. Same with the colour screen: a colour screen is *BUZZ* factor because a phone with colour screen is a buzz factor. It's not a question whether it is needed or not, it looks way better to the average guy. No-one (as in anyone that doesn't read/.) ever thinks of their needs with these things. Compare a greyscale mobile phone with internals containing every feature under the sun, with a phone with colour screen. Colour screen looks more modern. Colour screen is nicer to look at, therefore easier to use (probably, unless something is screwed up). Colour always wins, and has always won in the end.
Try out MEXP for WinAmp. I've used it way before iTunes came out. And where is this standard that you speak of? iTunes is hardly even "common" where I come from.
As for me personally, I have a 20gb iRiver. If I could take some (not all) of the design points of the iPod and put them in my player, I'd have the perfect player. Best design, best features. The design features would be: the scroll wheel (just the wheel), slimness. The rest is already on the iRiver (except for iTunes which, again, only exists in N.America and parts of Europe). Oh, perhaps weight too, but it'd still be heavy anyway.
Man, Use Google! That's so old news, it'd be too old even for slashdot! Here, I even found the place for you. Taken from the site:
CO2 metric tons/capita in 1996 Germany = 10,51 France = 6,20 USA = 19,99
In other words, the US has almost twice the CO2 output per person when compared to Germany.
As a side note: I can kind of agree that the Kyoto treaty is "designed to hurt the US economy" as some say. With pollution numbers like that, of course the US economy will be hurt! "Made your own bed..." and all that.
But that's not enough. The English subs need to be translated from the Japanese original audio, not just the English dubbed script converted to subtitles. Thus, two separate translations are required for optimal results (since text != voice).

Yes, and paying for received messages means you have to pay to receive crap. Imagine paying to receive spam...

I'm also confused by this quote in TFA: "It's about feeling part of a little group with cellphones,
What little group is she talking about?? Or are mobile phones still rare in the US?
Ah, sure. But what are the major/minor ones then, Particularly the minor one?
Excuse me, but if it's not rotating along an axis, then.... what??
It's not a contrail, look how it goes BEHIND the lamppost! Clearly not a contrail. I say insect!

I haven't seen anything like that in a long while now, using Opera. It's getting rarer all the time. Windows Update excepted of course.
Just for the record, BBC is now reporting 20 000 dead at 12:30 gmt.

It seems that a displacement in the sea bottom ocurred, moving 10-30 metres up along a rupture of 1000 km, causing a wave of hundreds of cubic kilometres of ocean water.

But hey, you can easily an "Approved by RIAA" startup logo into it. How's that for looking good? :)
;)
(I like the look of it!

As always, America != Asia.

Bah, no need to even scroll anywhere. Just zoom out in your favourite image viewer.
