If you use windows 8 sans metro, it has a lot of nice improvements for power users. For example, right-click the bottom left corner and you have one click access to all sorts of stuff that otherwise takes several clicks to get to.

Also, boot times are FAST. My computer mostly stays on 24/7, but when I modify something (par for the course of an overclocked system) a full reboot takes under 10 seconds.

Along with that, memory and CPU requirements are lower on 8, namely because it needs less of each.

Metro kills all of the above, but again, just forgo metro and you do have a worthy successor to 7.

There was a previous Slashdot article blaming this incident on Cisco, and even though I don't work for Cisco, I want to cut the bs and set the record straight. Let me do so by quoting the words of the main politician behind this project

West Virginia Homeland Security chief Jimmy Gianato, who's leading the state broadband project, defended the $24 million router purchase last week, saying the devices "could meet many different needs and be used for multiple applications."

"Our main concerns were to not have something that would become obsolete in a couple of years," Gianato said. "Looking at how technology evolves, we wanted something that was scalable, expandable and viable, five to 10 years out. We wanted to make sure every place had the same opportunity across the state."

So we have this asshole behind this mess, but the mass media blames Cisco and Verizon. There's more:

Verizon spokesman Keith Irland said the company simply responded to router specifications detailed in the state's bid posting.

"They specified the equipment they wanted," Irland said. "That's what they requested, that's what we bid on. We had the lowest price, and we won the bid for the equipment and related maintenance."

The Gazette-Mail contacted two Cisco sales agents last week, asking whether the 3945 series routers were appropriate for schools and libraries.

"The 3945 is our router solution for campus and large enterprises, so this is overkill for your network," a Cisco representative responded.

The sales agents recommended a smaller router -- with a list price of $487.

State Department of Education officials questioned the size of the routers before Gianato and the Office of Technology executed the $24 million purchase order.

    http://www.wvgazette.com/News/201205050057

Other than manufacturing the equipment, Cisco had nothing to do with this project. They weren't even involved in the sales. So clearly corrupt corporations are to blame, not the poor innocent politicians. Oh and did I mention that he was commended for this later?

My last nvidia card (I think around the age of the gt220, though I don't remember the model) didn't work with the latest unified driver, rather I had to download a separate driver that carried GPU's from x generation to y generation (the old driver was still updated for newer windows though.) They have a different driver for different generations of cards.

AMD basically does the same thing as far as I'm aware, though for some OEM parts you can't use the stock drivers. I'm not sure why this is, but I think it has to do with the OEM wanting to change some parts of the GPU that go outside of AMD's normal driver spec, so you'll be forced to install OEM supplied drivers. If you use a discreet graphics card you shouldn't ever run into this issue, and I think AMD fusion APU's shouldn't have this issue either but I could be mistaken.

I have apple's latest version of iOS (on my ipad,) and it already feels dated.

    - Application icons get thrown about haphazardly upon install requiring manual sorting, even for an app you don't even use very much (whereas android stores them alphabetically so they are easy to find - even if you rarely use the app.)
    - Changing any common setting requires switching apps followed by menu navigation, whereas on android it's just a swipe and tap without any navigation necessary (e.g. turning wifi on/off, muting, orientation lock.)
    - Can't set application launch defaults, such as setting a default email client other than the stock one. (good lord...WHY? every other OS has done this since the 80's...)
    - Although apple finally made notifications stop interrupting what you're doing by borrowing the notification bar system from android, the notifications it provides aren't ever good enough to tell you what you need to know without opening them.
    - I'm not a heavy widget user, but I like having a brief display of my agenda visible on my smartphone desktop, as well as an RSS ticker on my tablet desktop. Apple offers no such capability without running an app. Every other OS, including (shudder) windows phone has managed to do this, but not apple.

The whole point of a smartphone is having access to information you need quickly, and iOS hasn't offered many improvements in that department in years. The ones that it has added (e.g. passive notifications) it ripped from android, and it didn't really do a good job of it.

It's kind of hard to give the "innovative" title to a company who hasn't really done anything other than incremental hardware updates. While android is also stuck in increment land at the moment, at least it increments both hardware AND software. Also android doesn't call each generation "the best iphone yet" or "the new ipad".

Well, that's assuming you use the OEM install disk or recovery partition, which restores all of the crapplets and spamware back to the way it came to you.

If you want a clean install, you still need to insert the proper key and activate upon installing with a clean disk. The only difference is you don't have to load the SLIC table into the bios ACPI memory because your computer already comes with that.

OEM activations of windows almost always require a phone call to microsoft because they don't expect you to install with a clean disk, and when you do, they want to know what's up. I've been through the process, and it is even more annoying than the normal phone in activation. First you get the activation key and have to enter it in to the phone, but it's going to fail no matter what, and you have to enter it a second time only for it to fail again. After a long time of screwing with that, you'll finally get transferred to a guy in Mumbai who will ask you to read the sticker on the COA, ask how many different computers you have it installed on and if you have replaced the motherboard.

Overall you're looking at spending at least 30 minutes on the phone. Meanwhile if you just use the Daz tool, you'll spend all of about the time it takes for your computer to reboot.

As another AC pointed out, you can hack tivos to ignore the CCI byte. I've actually done so myself, namely by breaking the chain of trust. You reprogram the prom to not check the kernel, which then doesn't check the tivoapp binary. You then patch tivoapp to ignore the CCI byte. Over at dealdabase, we've been doing this for years with no problems.

However I need this for more than one TV, which with tivo gets very expensive very fast. And XBMC does things so much better than tivo (which is ad laden, even with my lifetime subscription.) I just want to move away from that platform and be done with it, but I do have mine set up to ignore the CCI byte. Since only one of my tivos is hacked like this, the MRV function is useless anyways, and I don't care about tivotogo, so there's not much point in having it hacked to begin with other than some other things which tivo should have done a long time ago, but won't.

It also just out of nowhere will say there are no available tuners, even though nobody is using any tuners at all except that instance of WMC (microsoft is aware of this bug, but won't release a patch.)
