  1. Obviously this is a civil issue on Compensation for Bandwidth Costs is Extortion? · · Score: 4, Insightful

It does appear the webmaster is a scumbag, and probably had evil intentions from the getgo. However, the sheriff's office made an oral agreement, no written contract, with this person.

The evil webmaster then said, after 3 years and however many hits later, I need some cash. Pay me a lot of money or I'll shut it off to cut my costs.

Sheriff replies "Screw You!" and throws him in jail.

This is a Civil Issue, not a bullshit criminal case.

Oh jesus christ..it's people like this that scare the bejesus out of me, even more so than the Patriot Act itself. Prosecutors are using the law, that's not the issue. The issue is that the law is fucked up! Expanded wire tappings not requiring a judge's signature..the ability for prosecutors to listen in on attorney-client conversations without their knowledge, the list goes on. And, for what it's worth, I sure as hell don't think someone cooking up crystal meth should be charged as a god-damn terrorist. I much prefer to sit back and allow darwinism to purge the idiots from our midst.

  12. MSN is not required to be Objective on How Objective Is Microsoft's Search? · · Score: 1, Insightful

What people don't take into account is that search engines are not required to be objective. Typically, and yes this is a fallacy, people expect the news to be objective. The press is thought to have a certain responsibility for being both fair, accurate and objective. People take this inherent belief and extrapolate it to search engines. MSN does not have to be objective. Google doesn't have to be objective. However, Google's whole premise is to help people find what they want fast, and they do it very well. If they didn't, people would not use it. MSN, too, wants to help people find things fast as well, but it might appear that they perhaps slant the search results just a tad. Maybe not, I don't know. My point is, if they do, that's fine because they are under no obligation to not do so. Ideally, information would be free to all people, with no hidden agendas in the presentation. Ideally, communism works great, too.
