  1. education on Sun Mulling GPL for Solaris · · Score: 5, Interesting

Im not sure how this would affect the business world, but here at least it would most likely spread more understanding of *nix. Most of the apps we use here in classes, various Programming/Asic/Chip design programs, are only run on solaris boxes. If solaris were available for free, i have a feeling many students would install it on their system, just to more easily use these apps if for nothing else.

  2. games on Dreamcast Tribute Revisits Cult Console, Games · · Score: 1

Some reason i always decide to pick up consoles when they are on their way out. Did it with saturn, just to own one for 30bux for nostalgic value, and then DC when it it 40. Id have to say my favorite games for it were most definetly: Rez - I dunno what it is about this game, its just so addicting to me. Just really entertaining music/shooter game Tennis 2k- This still reigns as my all time favorite tennis sim, nothing can beat it, tried topspin on the xbox and it just doesnt have the same feel Rival Schools 2- Something about a nonsensical story line about rival clubs in a high school with awesome special moves just made me keep comin back to. Strangely addicting fighting game For those of who are thinking of picking up a used dc i highly recommend finding those, rez may be hard, but the other 2 should be pretty easy to find.

  3. Follow Up: I dont know if its already implemented on MPAA Infiltrating Campus Nets with Software · · Score: 2, Interesting

As a follow up, i forgot to add, a friend at another Uni had also recieved a letter telling him to report to court. When he arrived he realized they were charging him with sharing movies, of which they had a list of which they scanned their network for. They just told him to immediately remove them and all would be well. Then again maybe this was back in the more lenient days of the crackdown. He also added though that after him, a student came up who had been busted with just about every app MS makes and they were actually fining him and he could be facing jail time. It appears many uni's are handling this in their own way, no need to intervene

  4. I dont know if its already implemented on MPAA Infiltrating Campus Nets with Software · · Score: 2, Interesting

I remmember at least in freshman year, I knew at least 4 people that had recieved notices in their mailboxes about how they had been busted for sharing and to stop immediately, if not their service would be disconnected. This had nothing to do with the RIAA but for violating the campus policy about doing illegal and non-educational activity over the network. I dont know why more UNI's just dont do that. This year, 2 years later, I see opinions all over our campus paper about how students are now recieving automated emails that their service will be cut, and it has. Maybe we have this implemented already and dont know it. In any case, maybe campus's should just police their own network for the sake of keeping their networks clean and to prevent bandwidth sucking from those sharing, thats why it was done here to begin with.

here at purdue they are currently constructing a nanotechnology building, should be done in a few years. Nanotechnology is coming around, dont think they woulda built an entire building dedicated to it without thinking about where its going.

The creators of xboxlink, xbox tunneling software have already gotten their gamecube tunneling to work and are currently working on also implementing ps2 tunneling as announced today on xbox-scene.com . After disocovering the ps2 ilink port is gone on newer playstation incarnations they discovered syslink games can be played over ethernet on a ps2 and started work immediately, but their work on GC was done many weeks ago apparently very easily. http://www.xboxlink.co.uk/

  9. Bandwidth limiting on Solutions for University File Sharing? · · Score: 4, Interesting

Being a student at a university next door to IU we also had problems with bandwidth usage. My freshman year bandwidth limitations were implemented to restrict data to 250megs a day, after that the download speed crawls. Even under modest use of surfing, listening to previews of music, the occaionsal porn and what not the limit is still reached even by those who didnt share files. Everyone protested this on campus and I believe the restrictions were removed.
The problem is, even with bandwidth restrictions, those with a little bit of know how easily get around them, there are no real solutions to this problem on campus's. If the students bandwidth is restricted, then it just gets routed through the schools servers itself, which of course are not bandwidth limited (for those of you under this type of tyranical bandwidth limit, there is a clue as to how to solve this problem). The only real solutions are the ones that are like Penn states implementation of actually giving the students an option.
Of course no awadays on campus the bandwidth isnt really used up so much by music, but more so by movies, but thats another topic.

  10. EE Info on Computer Studies w/o Excessive Coding? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am currently an EcE student at Purdue. Personally, i find the electrical sections of an ECE degree to be much harder than the programming elements, but thats just me. At least here, with a Computer engineering degree there is still a fair amount of programming that you have to do. 2 C courses, 1 course in ABEL (hardware programming), 1 Course in advanced data structure programming using C/C++, 1 Course in VHDL (integrated circuit design and programming), and those are just the ones ive gotten to. I believe there are a few more.
As far as a degree in computing without much programming you are probably going to have to look into IT administration or networking, I would think those routes would have less programming involved. Just ask an counselor at a school that provides these degrees.
