I'm thinking about trying FreeBSD for the first time (currently using Slackware) and I was wondering how good it is as a desktop as far as responsiveness and low latency compared to Linux with the 2.6 kernel?
Well, if you try it, just make sure to check out the options and to customize & configure it to your liking. Stick with it for a bit, it's a little different in some ways, but once you're used to it it's quite speedy and efficient.
Yeah, I know; a bunch of links isn't insightful and karma-worthy. But I want people to visit these places and be better informed anyway... I'm tired of the RIAA & co. oversimplifying everything.
I haven't had much experience with konqueror (I'm a Gnome, and use firefox) but I guess its lack of attention is due to its being tied up with KDE.
No matter how good it is, if it is a KDE type application not available on Windows it won't be as popular.
Very true, and I do think that they should try to make it as a standalone application, but I was mostly speaking about the fact that KDE is quite popular with the Linux crowd yet I almost never see posts about Konqueror in browser discussions on Slashdot.
It's too bad, really, because Konqueror is quite excellent and has only been getting better.
Mozilla & all its descendents is great, but more attention should be given to Konqueror, another great Open Source browser that deserves the support - or at least recognition - of the community (At last the Linux one).
If these machines are running windows, try K-Meleon. It's basedon Gecko from Mozilla, but runs much much faster on windows than Mozilla or Firefox because it has a native UI.
What makes it hard to evaluate the real impact is that yes they will lose some sales, but yes they also will gain lots of sales and publicity because their software spreads much faster.
Usually the big names will lose more (ie. Britney Spears could sell less CDs because people download her 1 or 2 singles) but the small guys usually benefit (lots of indie bands get their name out because people can listen for free and then send mp3s or recommendations to their friends and so on).
Being poor is no excuse for using something that does not belong to you, especially with the amount of free software available.
So the world would be a better place if that guy was staring at the wall instead of using a computer, is that it?
And don't give me that "get a job" thing. You don't know other people's situation and some of them are working very hard just to pay for tuition.
It's not like he'd have spent thousands of dollars on the software otherwise, so there is no lost sale. He didn't hurt anybody, he just made his life better.
I bet that OSS has as much of an impact, if not more, than P2P. Except for games, it's very rare that a commercial product has no alternatives that the average person could use instead.
I'm not responsable for the bad business model of these websites, and I don't watch ads on TV (well, I don't watch much TV anymore, but when I did I muted the ads and went away) or in newspapers either.
Its nice to see a company using patents correctly, and donating them to an organization who oversees the pyrotechnic industry.
Indeed. I'm actually quite surprised that they are doing that.
Oh well, there are exceptions to every rule. Naomi Klein (her book No Logo should be mandatory reading in high school) and Lawrence Lessig are still right about corporations and intellectual property.
That's good until they spin it to say that it means you have nothing to answer and they were right and you are not good enough to stay and talk with them, etc..
Meh for that kind of "news". Reminds me of why I don't watch TV anymore.
Ah. Thanks for the info. I guess I'll pass, then.

It's not about being pro or anti US; even US puppets can benefit from not being dependant on US/foreign companies for their software. Duh.
How's Darwin on x86? Does it have any advantages over other BSDs or Linux? Does it do things much differently? Is the hardware support lacking?
I'm very curious about it.
I hope that the EFF will succeed in busting these patents.

It's all about having choice.
Nice weather on Trantor this season, don't ya think?
This is probably just the tip of the iceberg.
*sigh*
Too bad that Konqueror isn't getting the attention it deserves.
It's not available on windows so I guess that's why... Too bad.
geez guys, it was sarcastic
Hard to tell with all the nuts out there. Many write such things very seriously all the time.
I guess that's what happens when you watch too much FAUX News.
Gates: "Open Source kills MY job."
Too bad the entire world isn't listening to the American Government.
I wonder why that would be?
Oh yeah...

I was going to talk about Open Source too.

Don't Yahoo use Google for their search results anyway?
Not anymore, they dumped Google a few months back.
That's when you shut yer yap and walk off.

Why DRM won't work, and why it's not good for any of the parties involved.
