  2. Re:Nanny State on US To Extinguish (Most) Incandescent Bulb Sales By 2012 · · Score: 1

Yes I agree with you... We don't need congress passing bills forcing sales of incandescent light bulbs to halt. That will make people angry and give yet more authority to the government. Instead we should encourage people to start using fluorescent bulbs because of the benefits to their wallets and the ecosystem. But as previous posters mentioned there is no one cure-all solution to this issue. What will happen when they need to throw them out? Do they recycle them?

If both types of light bulbs were equal in the pros and cons then I prefer using an incandescent bulb because I like the way the lighting looks. It is also good for producing some heat and works well with dimmers. Its also much cheaper than fluorescent although it does not last as long.

If we continue letting our government tell us what we can and can't do we may lose all of out rights. Its happening slowly. Trans-fats being banned would of caused riots maybe 40 years ago but nobody really did much because they are looking out for us right??? Maybe I'm overreacting right? We shall see what happens.

You talk about encrypting files, locking out access to files with third party tools, or creating a new user on the machine so the tech can not access the clients personal data... I say that if the user knows how to do that then they probably know how or can learn how to fix their own machine issues. That guy wanted to have a DVD burner installed... Thats easy to install. I've been using Firefox since version 1.5. The Firefox 2 for me is taking up way to much memory for me and at times lags when I scroll down the page but not that much. I'll be looking forward to Firefox 3. I agree with you that the extensions are the most appealing. I love Firefox extensions. However I only install what I need which is adblocker+, noscript, and del.icio.us bookmarks.

Although I am r00ting for Firefox I hope the other browsers improve and support standards more. If all future browsers start accepting standards more eventually we _MAY_ not need to create hacks/workarounds for browsers like IE6. Or maybe IE will just die >:-)

On occasion I will start Konqueror and I don't think its such a bad browser but without the extensions like Firefox I won't be using it. And only if it is cross platform will I use it. It makes things simpler for me. As it stands Firefox has and will be my browser of choice.

Thats all I have to say on this. Looking forward to a stable release of Firefox 3 and wish positive results :-D

I live in the suburbs of NY and I have seen less SUV's being driven than maybe 3 years ago and more or less smaller cars (Many Hondas, Subaru's, etc that are small). I think that the "bigger is better" mindset will eventually go away. My grandparents like larger cars but those are pretty much all the people I know who prefer them. Those types of people have the "bigger cars are safer" mindset. Smaller cars in my opinion are safer and handle better. The car I drive gets 27MPG and was my mothers. When I can afford a new car I will look at a Ford cars along with the foreign automakers. I prefer driving a 5-speed manual. The American automakers ecofriendly cars to me look like shit anyway but non-the-less I will look at them. Thats all I gotta say.

  8. Re:Opera on Opera Tells EU That Microsoft's IE Hurts the Web · · Score: 0

Currently I am attending college working towards my BS in Computer Science. I took a web design course and worked on my own web site which has gone through a few evolving stages. The most recent version of my Web Site adheres to W3C standards. When I was doing QA the site was tested on Firefox (1.5 and 2x in Linux and Windows), Opera (9.24), IE (6,7), Konqueror (...forgot version sorry), and Safari (Forgot version... Tried in Windows and on MAC). Not to get into much testing details but what I am trying to say is that my site worked great on all browsers except in IE6 because of the poor support for CSS. IE7 displays my site much better than IE6 but still sucks. I am against adding hacks to my web site to make my site work with IE6 or 7 or any browser for that matter. I strongly feel that if you follow well established web standards your site will work on any browser. However if your creating a web site for a company you will probably be required to add hacks to your site for IE to capture a larger user base. Disagree with me but I agree with Opera that IE does hurt the web with its own poor web standards. I don't agree that IE is locking in users to their browser because should the user want to switch to lets say Firefox they can. Lots of people I know that are average web users do not care that they are using IE. Many times they do not know what a browser is. They just want to use the machine to get their job done and don't give a shit about web standards. Their minds shut down when they hear any technical acronym... You get the idea... This has been mentioned a million times before and I don't think IE is going anywhere and don't think that Opera will win the battle. I just hope it makes IE8 support more standards.

"So tired of people trying to legislate good parenting."

I agree with that. I think good parenting has gotten hard to find these days. I blame this on the way our society now functions. The women needed in the workplace along with the men due to more expenses to pay forces parents to rely on babysitters and daycare more often. So that makes it more difficult for parents to monitor all the things their kids see.

Also, if kids are playing violent video games and watching TV shows with some violence and the parents educated their kids on what is right and what is wrong there usually wont be a issue. I hate the fact that irresponsible parents try to get everyone else to change their behaviour so their kids be affected. Nobody can give kids a slap or tell some other parents kid not to do something.

FFv2x has this built in and it is great. However the browser is kind of slow and would be nice to have it faster. I'm glad this is being improved upon! Haven't tried out the beta yet though.
